See here is the thing - some of us make fun of everything - ourselves, our friends, and every bit of irony that is presented to us. Why do people have to take it all so seriously? So I made fun of someone - the proper thing to do is give it right back to me, not go running to the mods.

or, if not that, to let it go. these are merely words on a screen from a person you don't know

They are not mere words, you post them specifically for the reaction they'll receive....the laugh, giggle, kudos, compliment..whatever.

so we must cater to the thin skinned

Those are your words, not mine. I think I've stated pretty clearly my point of view.

Again, you are attempting to impose your standards onto someone else.

The proper thing to do IS report it. It is against the forum rules to make fun of someone in a way that is insulting, belittiling or embarrassing.

But if I say something funny and someone is offended by it, how is that my fault?

Tolerance, and insulting, attacking and belittling do not go hand-in-hand.

freedom of speech is not a one way road, it goes both ways to protect all views. one's view is no more important than another's

Here in the forums freedom of speech means following the forum rules. There are rules everywhere for conduct, no different here. Has nothing to do with trying to infringe on freedom of speech whatsoever.

All the more reason, because you don't the reader or how they'll react, to chose to be kind rather than not.

I think this thread is getting side tracked. I am sure everyone knows the difference between being funny and rude. I think the point of the thread is to tell others not to be rude. If someone makes a mistake correct them but do so in a respectful and polite way, not in a insulting and rude way.
For example if I misspelled a word instead of telling me , wow you are worse than a 2nd grader, let me know through email or in that particular thread by saying I think you misspelled that word wrong, or can you clarify what you meant.
I also think this applies to strangers than your friends. You friend might know that you are joking when you say , you are worse than a 2nd grader, but a stranger might not.
Just my opinion.flowerforyou flowerforyou flowerforyou flowerforyou

this topic does not, but your previous words did. the topic this has developed into is far larger than a lack of english mastery

Been a lot of talk of this lately in the forums. So, here's my 2 cents worth.

There are folks here who couldn't give a flip what anyone thinks of their spelling, grammar and punctuation here in the forums or on their profiles, and they are entitled to that.

There are folks here who truly do not know the proper use of grammar and punctuation so simply telling them to use it does little good if the knowledge does not exist, and in my experience ridiculing them, embarassing them or making them the butt of jokes never helps.

No one is being graded here in the forums and as far as I know, we have not appointed grammar police. Everyone should feel free to present themselves in the forums, within the forum rules, as they wish, and last I check there was not a forum rule regarding proper spelling and punctuation.

Proper spelling and use of punctuation are great qualities, another one......tolerance. flowerforyou

If something about your personality causes you to do or say something outside of the guidelines of the forum rules, then yeah, I say you need to adjust.
