If someone comes into my hotel and fills out an application for employment, I will gladly accept it.

I'll read it.

If it is obvious they don't know the difference between "your" and "you're", "there", "they're", and "their", etc, the application quickly goes in the "Hold for one year per company policy but no way in hell will they be getting called for an interview." folder.

Sure it's a waste of paper, my time, and theirs, but there's no way around it. I cannot afford to employ someone in any capacity that cannot produce basic English skills. That's just how it is.

Online, the standards are relaxed, and spelling/typos are forgiven. When it's blatantly obvious someone doesn't truly know basic grammar, however, I'm disappointed. Those are just my own personal standards. <shrug>

I agree with Jace. In a medium like this, language is the only way you have to present yourself. When I look get an e-mail from someone I don't know, and it is rife with misspellings and IM-speak, and consists of one long unpunctuated paragraph, it gets deleted. That person would not get a look from me, because what he is saying to me is, "I don't care enough to make an effort for you."

it doesnt bother me, if someones spelling isnt good etc. he/she could have a learning disability and i wouldnt want to offend. i think its unfair, when people jump down each others throats when they spell incorrectly. grumble grumble

I have not seen anything i can't understand no matter how bad the spelling may be. If everyone is so articulate and talented certainly a little bad spelling can be easily understood without belittling the person or making them feel unwelcome. We want the members here to feel welcome.

Terry -- I have never seen a post of yours that I couldn't understand! And believe me, I've read a LOT of your posts....!

OK, so sometimes you get a little "creative" with your efforts, but that's a good thing, right??

I have seen things I couldn't make heads or tails of. People have coined words, too, and I had no idea what they were supposed to mean. Why is it wrong to ask them to clarify? Are we supposed to pretend to understand, or find another thread?

To ME THATS JUST WRONG..
Any INDIVIDUAL is still a PERSON, and if that person comes here to be nice and TRY to type here,,,,,MORE POWER TO THEM..
And GOD BLESS THEM...
If UNDERSTANDING THEM, is a Problem,,,,TRY ASKING THEM NICELY,,,what they ment?????????
Im SURE,THEY wouldn't have an issue with a nicely ask question about their wording..

ANY ONE OF US, have the ability to be cruel or smartazz.
But FEW, REALLY WANT TO GIVE THEIR TIME TO FEEL ANOTHERS HEART....or PERSON....

Its MUCH easier to just be funny and play in the forums.
As to SEE ANOTHER who NEEDS HELP,,,,most will hit a jab and make that person feel bad...And then, THAT Person,,,DOESN'T WANT TO TYPE here AMYMORE, SO THEY JUST LEAVE....

No, contrary to what some would have to believe, proper language skills is not a requirement to post in the forums, but I know for a fact some folks do not feel welcome to post in the forums because they have been made to feel it is a requirement and I think that it is unfortunate that we have sent that message.

Personally, as I've tried to point out, I think tolerance is a far better quality to possess than proper language. I would hate to think I have overlooked some very wonderful qualities in someone because I couldn't get passed a misspelled or mis-used word, or missed punctuation mark.

But lilbug, it isn't just one misspelled word, or missed punctuation mark. We all do that, every one of us. And some people, doubtless, are more skilled in the use of the language than others. But I have seen things that were pretty much incoherent. It is as if they typed a stream of random letters on a page and expected us to do the work to try and decipher what they mean. Wouldn't you want to be told if you were doing that? I would.

i think if they were doing that, they would be aware.

in my opinion who cares?? if that person wants to type like that, fair play, theres no rules saying you have to type properly.

if it was someone filling out important documents id help. otherwise, let them be.

YOU would, THEY may not and they may not care what you or I think, that's THEIR choice. Personally, I have not seen a post I cannot decipher and if I did, I'd just move on.
