I guess it depends on how someone asks them, some people are nice enough to say, can you please clarify, while others are downright rude and says things like, did you go to grammar school, spelling and grammar is not your strength, etc...

That would also be in bad taste, but I have experienced simple requests for clarification be taken out of context and dragged on to appear to be a personal attack.

But I understand thanks bigsmile

Asking someone for clarification is one thing, disparaging them or ridiculing is not acceptable and is against forum rules. It's just that simple guys, no grey areas...if you attack someone we will take action. Please help us avoid that by respecting our members,
Thanks,
Mark

So don't thro tedy bares in the korner ore at thos of us hoo rnt as eduoocatid as others. bigsmile

well, folks shouldn't get all pissy when they get called out. if you know you have probs, then expect someone to say something.

I have horrible spelling, I know this, I expect people to joke and kid, and to them I reply with either a joke about me... or one about them...I'm not going to get pissy because.....Why? I'M A CRAPPY SPELLER. I know this about me. I have come to terms with it.

Typos are fine, sometimes you are in a heated debate, or are just to lazy to check it.... Oh well.

If someone points out your mistake.... either laugh or go on about your business.... IT'S NOT THAT SERIOUS.... And if you get pissy about it..... Well it needed corrected... PERIOD.

Boohoo, they picked on me because I have poor language skills... Well now I'm going to pick on you because you are a crybaby about it too.... Which is worse???

your spelling may be poor but your communication skills are fantastic. You manage to make every post CRYSTAL CLEAR.

Your spelling in no way inhibits my ability to understand you. Some others...I can't say the same for them.

So then, just move on, rather than comment on it.

Is asking what they meant against forum rules?

If it is done in a manner within the forum guidelines, i.e., is not insulting, embarrassing, belittling or can be interpreted as an attack.

In one thread someone made up a word. As an interested party, I wanted to know what it meant. I looked it up in the dictionary and couldn't find it. So I asked what it meant. You would have thought I had called the person a name. Someone said, "it's just a typo". I said, "fine, what word was he trying to type?" because I was curious to know what he was trying to say. People jumped all over me for that. Attacks go both ways, just know that.

Ok, I think Franshade hit it on the head. One man's question is another man's attack. I know, I have been berated for asking people to explain. Wouldn't you think they would want people to hear what they are saying?

me personally, i would move on. i wouldnt ask, as its not worth upsetting someones feelings for the sake of nothing.its not like we NEED to know, its not a important document etc.

So we should go threw life not understanding people and not asking questions or clarification.

We should only be concerned about our own point of view, and if we want to learn something, and have an interest, we should just forget about it?

So we should not strive for meetings of the mind?

Oh ok, I'll go back under my rock and play with the voices in my head....

Fair enough...

well, no, but aren't you interested in what people are saying? Isn't that why we are all here?

The fact is there are folks who do not post and have stopped posting because they have been embarrassed, insulted or attacked by self-appointed grammar police running through the threads. None of you can deny it's happened and some of you have been a part of it. It's not the message I want to send to folks still sitting on the fence deciding whether or not to participate in the threads. Everyone, no matter their language skills should feel free to post in the forums. These forums do not belong to a select group, they belong to all of us.
