What conservative is controlling this situation??

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is an ultra conservative. So is the Ayatollah Khamenei and the Iranian government. The only hope for the future is for another revolution in Iran that would install a more liberal, progressive government.

Conservative leaders in the middle east are the problem.

I think if Thomas Jefferson were to come back today, he would give Glenn Beck a good swift kick in the azz and tell him how F'd up he is about the founding fathers ideas for this country.

smokescreens and us vs them politics

aint it grand?

Instead of just having blind criticism why don't you try debating the subject with facts. Or is a smokescreen of distraction, the only card you have to play?

So in keeping with the last comment--

Regarding all those bureaucracies that the article seems to portray as 'liberal, democratic' institutions designed to undermine capitalism -- which would you propose should not be in existence and what is the reasoning behind that opinion?

I agree with the OP which is obviously why I posted it in the first place. Not one of you who disagree has offered anything other than opinions as to why you disagree. Distraction once again. It wont work, you will have to give me a reason other than your feelings on the matter, as to why you disagree.

It's a very lengthy article but let's start with the beginning of the piece.

In the OP:

"This was demonstrated in the late 1920s after the stock market crashed. In a panic, the government, under enormous public pressure, cut off free trade under the Hawley-Smoot Tariff Act by imposing heavy taxes (a socialist idea) on imports. This slowed down international trade and killed millions of jobs in America."

"These taxes were ‘protectionist’ measures that liberals always use to ‘protect’ jobs, when in fact the overall result was to kill jobs, as it is today.

"*imposing heavy taxes on imports (liberal idea) "

Here are the facts:

Smoot was a Republican from Utah and chairman of the Senate Finance Committee. Willis C. Hawley, a Republican from Oregon, was chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee.

When campaigning for president during 1928, one of Republican Herbert Hoover's promises to help beleaguered farmers had been to increase tariffs of agricultural products. Hoover won, and Republicans maintained comfortable majorities in the House and the Senate during 1928. Hoover then asked Congress for an increase of tariff rates for agricultural goods and a decrease of rates for industrial goods.

In May 1930, a petition was signed by 1028 economists in the U.S. asking Republican President Hoover to veto the legislation, organized by Paul Douglas, Irving Fisher, James TFG Wood, Frank Graham, Ernest Patterson, Henry Seager, Frank Taussig, and Clair Wilcox. Automobile executive Henry Ford spent an evening at the White House trying to convince Hoover to veto the bill, calling it "an economic stupidity". J. P. Morgan's chief executive Thomas W. Lamont said he "almost went down on my knees to beg Herbert Hoover to veto the asinine Hawley-Smoot tariff."

Hoover yielded to influence from his own party and business leaders and signed the bill.

Franklin D. Roosevelt spoke against the act while campaigning for president during 1932.

I could go on and on.....the original article posted is really a bunch of propaganda and Hogwash!

I think Stewart is really on to something with the rally.

I also think he is going to draw a crowd to DC that will dwarf that of the idiot Glenn Beck.

And coupled with Colberts planned march to "Keep fear alive".......this is going to be great!

Man, that's really gonna' pisss off H.

Those agents will be lucky if he doesn't try having them arrested and prosecuted.

those two border agents that shot a smuggler a few years ago are still in prison... then they gave the illegal free passage to cross the border anytime he wants, and 6 months later he was caught smuggling again... go figure, huh...
They were released, and they both recieved a full presidential pardon from Bush before he left office. They are free men today.

They didn't get a full presidential pardon....their sentences were commuted. There's a big difference.

Ya, and that was Bush from Texas that had them sent to prison. Their names are Campean & Ramos.....they shot a drug smuggler and got sentenced to 12 years by Bush.

The problem is not America being "under taxed". The problem is over spending.

At this rate soon, all of the US tax income will be needed to pay the interest on the national debt.

Sure, spending is always a problem. Arizona is about to receive millions in federal funds.

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced Monday that Arizona will receive nearly $212 million aimed at keeping thousands of teachers in the classroom this school year.

All you hear about the conservative state of Arizona and Jan Brewer is SB 1070. Seems like our conservative State Government bi!tches about spending but holds their hand out when the Feds show them $$.

All the States are guilty of this. They complain about it but want their fair share of the $$.

The news appears to be full of "items" that appear to mean one thing, but actually mean something else. Billions of dollars of loan guarantees went to the Arizona solar plant to fund a company from Spain who will own and operate the plant. Millions of dollars went to Michigan to build the auto battery plant (that was also in the news) which is owned by a South Korean company. Other examples exist also.

Sending profits to foreign companies is not what our country needs. The profits are what creates capital to create new jobs and pay taxes.

Small solar systems have and will be viable and have made a dramatic and unexpected positive impact on the German economy. However, all the money and investment is beginning and ending in Germany. America is not copying the good aspects of the German model, they are simply throwing money at the problem, much of which is going overseas.

Obama, in his campaign promises, stated that new nuclear power plants would be started immediately to help change the trend from the US relying more and more on foreign sources of energy. This plan was implemented very successfully by France after the first oil embargo. After the election the "nuke" program slid onto the back burner.

Bush directed five billion dollars to the department of energy specifically to fund expansion in key US universities to permanently expand solar research and specifically develop plans to improve US manufacturing capability. This program was very successful but now the science to improve America's competitiveness in the PRODUCTION of solar cells is being given to China ... apparently as a gesture of "good will".

The description of the Bush program has now been deleted from the DOE websites opening web pages.

I agree that it would be much better if American Owned companies were heading up these projects.....and I blame the American companies for their failure to get with the program here.

Sure, profits are going to foriegn companies but there are still many components and US labor involved in the manufacturing, construction and operation of the plants.

Look at Toyota....how many people does Toyota employ in the USA? Thousands and thousands. I know they have plants all over the USA from California to Texas to Indiana, Kentuckey, Alabama & Mississippi.

Abengoa Solar Inc. is a multi-national corporation....seems like all the big companies are multi-nationals these days. It is a global economy.

First off he didn't say he supported a "tax cut", he was agreeing with the president on letting the already expiring tax cuts expire...except for people making over $250,000.00 a year.

Second, I am stunned he's for this...since the GOP obstruct anything the president does...even when they have to obstruct THEIR OWN POLICIES.

He'll pay a price for that move...unfortunately.

He has already back-pedaled from his statement. Rep Boehner has clarified his comment that he wants the tax cuts for everyone to be extended....even the wealthy.

The thing that amazes me is that it seems all the republicans want to continue the tax cuts for the wealthy. And now I believe the FOX polls show that a majority of Americans want it extended to the wealthy also.

People have been brain washed by FOX.

I believe it should be extended for the middle class but not the wealthy.

It seems that anything the President does, the republicans bi!tch about how it will add to the deficit. But when it is pointed out that by extending the cuts to the wealthy, it adds to the deficit some $700 billion, they don't want to have that conversation.

All they want to do is torpedo anything this administration proposes.

Even if we switch over to solar energy, it will not be cheap. Sure sunshine is free, but just like everything else, once the govt. sticks its nose into it, the prices will skyrocket and the heavy taxation will begin.

I think it will be just the opposite. These companies are hoping for the government to get involved....to help subsidize the start up of operations to keep the price spike down.

Right now, there are rebates and tax incentives to switch to solar. There are many companies starting up here in Arizona but are having a tough time getting off the ground due to the economy.

We also only have 2 primary utlity providers here in AZ and both are jumping on the bandwagon to get into green energy. They both seem to view it as the wave of the future....and these are huge companies.

It's very hard these days to get power plants built. I think the last major plant built here...Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station (I believe it's still the largest nuke plant in the USA) was built back in the 1970's. And that project must have sat on the table being debated for 10 years before they ever built it.

Nothing happens fast....people need to be patient and keep the ball rolling in the direction of solar energy.
