At one time they thought the world to be flat, but now we know it's round. So there's one contradiction. "God" in itself is not a being of any sorts. It is a title more or less, it is descriptive.

That is why Jesus even referred to his father as "God"

We do not know God's name, so in turn we refer to God as just that, God. Jesus only referred to his father as his father and his God, he did not give a name. So when speaking about him, to show who we are referring to, we must call him "God" as again, we know not his name.
