Topic: Is the Term Shopping a Red Flag? | |
---|---|
I tend to look at activities in a users profile and I notice the term shopping listed on a lot of profiles. I guess my question is if someone is spending their spare time "shopping" is that a red flag that could lead to constant arguments over finances and possibly bankruptcy? or is "Shopping" as a activity as opposed to a necessity the norm? Your thoughts?

Any one who has "shopping" as a hobby usually likes spending money. And usually it's somebody else's.

A woman listing shopping is the same as a guy listing themselves as a soccer or cricket supporter, it's an interest, it does not necessarily mean that she is a spendthrift in my opinion. I would not be put off, you need to chat and date someone to discover more about them. |

Your thoughts? Not always true. I’m a mom of 4 that need no financial assistance from anyone. I’ve been an extreme couponer for 25 years.. I find shopping therapeutic and even started a business - so I can shop as my husband would put it. I’m also a frugal as they come and won’t pay full price for anything. I met a man on here that looks like he cuts his own hair (sorry if you’re reading this - I speak the truth ) - So girls talk, I told my BFF he’s perfect, but cuts his own hair - nothing a good barber can’t fix. Lol BFF: That’s a sign he’s cheap ,,, me: omg that’s that dream. Give me a frugal man that loves mental stimulation. Man oh man and uses a coupon on a date. Sold. I taught all my kids and anyone willing to learn life skills. For me If I list shopping as my hobby - It could be regular shopping. When I’m bored I’ll tell my youngest 2 let’s go to Walmart, Costco or the grocery store… it’s still shopping, but never beyond my means. |

Not necessarily. You cannot judge a book by its cover. It could be a green flag too. Important is knowing someone firstly. All The Best |

One could also be shopping around for a mate.

No English dictionary has been able to explain the difference between the two words COMPLETE and FINISHED.
Some people say there is no difference but there is. When you marry the right woman you are COMPLETE! When you marry the wrong woman you are FINISHED! If you marry a woman who likes shopping you are COMPLETELY FINISHED. |

I'm not sure I'd see it that way. For me, I'd have to wonder about someone having so few interests that they have to actually list shopping as a hobby. Kind of like when someone lists sex as a hobby. Good grief.

Good grief. Agreed! As far as the OP goes, I think questioning if it's a red flag when women list shopping as an interest is, in itself, a red flag! The interest selection in profiles doesn't give you the option to write in specifics. It gives you a list of categories to select. Maybe they like going window shopping through historic downtown areas, antique shopping, or thrift shopping. All things that could be turned into a romantic date. Maybe message the person is question and ask them what it is about shopping that they like? Best of luck! |

I agree with River that a man who worries about this is a red flag himself.
It's indicative of not trusting, fearing the worst and being afraid to be taken advantage of. As it is they are shopping with no money of yours, so what's the fuzz about? And don't jump to conclusions. Fact someone mentions shopping doesn't mean they spend all their spare time shopping, which you seem to think. Personally I don't like a tightwad. Been with such a guy before, never again. I like to spend money. Life is meant to be enjoyed! And I'm an adult woman with common sense, so I don't spend more than I can afford. |

Just to be clear, the purpose of my post is to spur discussion on a topic I have not seen covered on threads that I have browsed. This discussion is not meant as an indictment nor a judgment of those who list shopping as a hobby. And it is surely not a discussion born out of fear of not trusting someone. if we look at the definition of Hobby: "an activity done regularly in ones leisure time for pleasure" Personally shopping does not fit that description for ME. ..In my opinion shopping is a TASK Do I like to buy things..YES..do I consider the process of finding the right item a hobby.. Absolutely not. I hope this clarifies my intention of creating this post.

Oh I don't know. I enjoy shopping about 2x a week myself. Shopping itself isn't as important as what type of shopping and for what?

Some might see you referring to a man as a "tightwad" a red flag in this day and age. Is there some reason you could not buy items yourself? Or are you talking about cheaping out on special event gifts (like buying your anniversary gift from the dollar store)? Imho, unless there's some defining reason, like a disability, or one person is making a good amount more than the other, and so the other could relax to take care of kids. That kinda stuff, but those scenarios aside, ideally, both people in a healthy relationship, should be self sustainable. |

Not really, I love shopping but you'll never find me in expensive shops, I like second hand vintage, DIY, and sewing my own so even in 2023 £10 is still a lot of money to me. So I guess its what the person is like really, if they are into living above their means then you will have troubles ahead.

Yes, if you're NOT doing it. Shopping is a task for you, great...skip it. Do something that is fun for you. I absolutely LOVE to shop. I'll shop for anything...clothes, furniture, appliances, bouquets, music, paintings, don't care what the item is...sign me up, please. At my job I sometimes have to be a personal shopper....best day ever!!!
When I see "fishing" on a guy's profile, I don't automatically calculate how many hours he'll be gone, whether he'll want to spend money to buy a boat, the scent of the fish, etc. We all have numerous interests and they should all have different levels of priority. If you and your partner have to be the same side of a coin, life is going to get monotonous very quickly (well, it would for me anyway. I like having different interests and hobbies than a partner. Gives me an opportunity to try and learn something new. I'm positive that activity and hobby have different meanings...no time to actually look that up, because that will cut into my shopping time |

That's funny what TechFairy said. My town has a thrift store and you can go in that store every day and find new things all the time, and always inexpensive.
