Topic: Spelling and grammar not important anymore? | |
---|---|
Sure, there will be teachers that suck. We've all had those kind of teachers. I had a programming teacher in college who said it was his job to teach, not help with the assignments. I could have just done what I could based on what he taught and suffered my way through class. Instead, I put the extra effort in and went to a tutor when I needed help on the assignments. I learned much more that way. So rather than blaming the teacher, I took responsibility for what I needed to learn. college is way different than elementary, middle, and high school though. what kid is honestly going to be interested in learning proper grammar or whatnot? [well maybe some fellow nerds.] most students just want to pass the class. they don't really look at it as learning. |

i was just thinking about this the other day. i don't understand why so many people are hesitant to blame teachers. i just graduated from high school about two years ago, and trust me, a lottt of teachers flat out suck. i wish they would ask students about their teachers. my school was tiny. my graduating class was about 110 students. teachers at my school are proud because apparently they have one of the highest graduation rates in the state. i'd like to know what most of my fellow classmates learned in high school though. i don't know. i just hated that damn school. haha. Yes, I think there are some teachers that aren't the best but that doesn't speak for all of them. All of my high school teachers were the best but much has changed for teachers. They used to teach a class and then have the next class off to mark papers, prep classes, or even take some time for their students. The teachers here don't have that time anymore and I feel for them. No one should have to work 18 hour days and a person can only give so much until they burn out. |

Good thing I didn't have teachers or parents who put up with that kind of attitude. And what I've been talking about is adults anyway. So, I guess they go back to the kind of attitude you're talking about when school is done? Not caring about grammar or spelling? |

i'm not saying all teachers suck.
i can honestly say there are some fantastic teachers out there. i'm just saying it seems as there are more shitty teachers than good ones. that's just my experience though. by the way, teachers at my school did get a class off, and there's no way in hell they had eighteen hour workdays. i would tutor after school, and there would only be a handful of teachers on campus after school was out. |

Not caring about grammar or spelling? i think that's the case for some. they don't see the importance of it i suppose. |

It is sad the way that people are typing these days, it shows that the person does not care either about who they are writing to or about themselves. I will admit I did not read through the last 6 pages of this thread so I might be just repeating what someone else has already said but like on sites like this if you are too lazy to hit the shift key or at least try to spell correctly then I do not want to waste my time trying to figure out the mess that is being typed out...

Ignorance and those lacking in common sense bother me more than spelling and grammar. Spelling and grammar can be fixed relatively easily but you’re either born with common sense or you aren’t. What does common sense have to do with this topic? Unless you're talking about using common sense to proofread what you've written, so that others can understand? btw singme...while I am beginning to understand this is just your m.o. I found this to be a little too rude. |

I have no problems with typos, or writing that is not perfect. I know that I'm not perfect, so I would not expect that from others. But, when it is clear that someone is not putting any effort into what they're writing, I will not put any effort into trying to decipher what they're saying. |

Many of us communicate via the written word with people quite often. Both on informal sites like this as well as at work. Sadly, people don't seem to care how they write anymore. Why is that? Especially when impressions on sites like this are made via writing? And business is done the same way? I often get emails where it's tough to read from lack of punctuation, text speak and just bad spelling. This actually happens at work as well. Sometimes, I wonder why people would think of typing that way in a professional setting. What do the rest of you think? Has spelling and grammar really become so much less important that people just don't care how they come across anymore? Spelling and grammar are important as they facilitate a higher level of communication. It is nice to find others who are well educated and familiar with the language making conversation easier and a bit more subtle and entertaining. On the other hand, anyone who has traveled around a bit and learned new languages knows that grammar and spelling are completely irrelevant with regard to true intelligence, creativity, humor and empathy. There are many people who simply do not know your language very well but are nevertheless extraordinarily sharp and interesting. So it is foolish to put too much emphasis on spelling and grammar. It is the person I am interested in - not what language is their native tongue or if they can spell innocuous or farcical. I have many friends for whom english was not their first language and I cut them a lot of slack. In general I look beyond form for substance...but I also appreciate an especially beautiful form. |

Anyway, no, what you were talking about was not obvious which is why I asked. I should have simply asked what you meant. I didn't mean anything else by it. |

I do agree somewhat. Though I am not talking about those who don't know our language. That is a bit different. I'd like to think most look beyond it for substance. But sometimes it's tough if you can't understand the typing enough. Anyway, I was not talking about anyone specific or being rude toward anyone. Thank you to those who participated in the discussion. It has been interesting. |

Sadly, no matter what anyone says, we cannot force people to use punctuation, spell correctly or use correct grammar.
On a site like this, I'm less likely to reply to an email if it takes a lot of effort to read through, though, as from experience, it won't get better after that. |
