Topic: Spelling and grammar not important anymore? | |
---|---|
When they introduced *no child will be left behind*, the actual education *learned* by each child decreased IMO
They no longer *had* to learn in order to pass their year. My own families' Facebook posts show *horrible* spelling skills. Nobody says anything about it, so I have to *guess* it's the *norm* now. (and *that* is really sad) |

Ignorance and those lacking in common sense bother me more than spelling and grammar. Spelling and grammar can be fixed relatively easily but you’re either born with common sense or you aren’t. What does common sense have to do with this topic? Unless you're talking about using common sense to proofread what you've written, so that others can understand? |

Why do you think it's less important? Or is it just people being lazy? For some people it is laziness but unfortunitely a lot of it is due to poor education. It is disappointing to see how many people cannot spell even simple words correctly. They don't know the difference between "there" or "their" or "they're" for example. In my opinion, men who continously misspell is a huge turn-off. A mistake or two is okay but when you need to go back to school it is another matter. I also have wondered if it is poor education. I know University students I worked with about 3 years ago could not do basic math with pen and paper or could spell. I think they have depended technology so much that they don't know the basics of math or english. I agree about the technology. Our country that was once a leader in many ways now ranks 28th in the world in education !!! That is way too far down the rankings :( We are becoming an entirely differnt country and I hate watching it all go downhill. DIFFERENT !! That was a typo! I may be a bad typist but I'm not a bad speller :) So I probably shouldn't point out that you misspelled continUously in your first post right? That was a typo too I'm sure! Sorry, I was a spelling bee champion when I was younger so I pick up on mistakes pretty easily. I do however agree with you that technology is dumbing down our kids. If they even use spell check, it's worthless in many situations. Proofreading seems to be obsolete these days and calculators are being used in grade school. When I was growing up, we had to memorize multiplication tables and look up words in a dictionary for correct spelling. Those days are gone! Without their gadgets, they're pretty much screwed. And look there, I even got proper usage of their and they're in that sentence (and all 3 versions in this one!). |

I think that blaming it on education is a cop out. As long as someone has education to blame, they don't have to try to fix the problem, right? Had to think about this for a few minutes I *do* blame it on the education system... *however*... I also *do* try to correct them, but not to the point where I'm constantly *nagging* them. They are (sort of) grown and left the nest, so it's more important to *be there* for them, than it is to be constantly harping on their short-comings. |

To me I believe it's laziness though few people might be bad typist.

Imho language evolves, as do we, for better or worse. Not long ago, the Romans didnt have a letter u or w, early use of those symbols might have seemed crass to the literati roman 'purist' of her day.
Cuniform is written as collections of little triangular dinks, I'm kind of glad that we have moved on from that, imagine what your keyboard would look like. And I would need to wear better contacts than the none I have now. |

I'm not necessarily talking about nagging people. Or correcting them all the time. I just hear people blaming the education system for various things, yet never doing a thing about it. And even people blame the education system for themselves not being smart enough. To me, that's just being lazy and not taking responsibility for themselves. |

Who knows? Predicting it would be challeging, too many variables.
To have predicted some of the influences on the language of today - from say ony 40 years back - would have required that you imagined mobile phones 25 years before they took off and smilies 12 years before the internet became sentient in 1983 when Tim Berners Lee created html. |

There is a facet of language and the written word that the die hards of grammatical correctness, simply don't consider.
Languages and writtings evolve and chage just like everything else does. At one point, pictographs were the way to go. That evolved into heiratic, then onto cuneiform, then onto heiroglyphics. That changed to various alphabets and those changes don't stop. Would we really be better off using Shakespeare's english? I can't understand half the crap the dude wrote from trying to hard to make it 'frilly' with completely unneeded fluff. What is the point of using 30 words when you can get your point across in 10? Having a large venacular does not equate with intelligence...though it will fool stupid people. Just like simple communiques don't mean they are dumbasses...though there are alot. 50 years ago, "internet", "Cyber", "cell phone", "Fax" and a whole butt load of other words weren't part of the language. I bet most of us use those words daily. Try texting.. "Verily, I shall sally forthe unto yon fair damsel at cockes crow on the morrow a fortnight hence to impart my adoration upon her countenance and beseech the fair maiden to acquiesce to my boone of betrothal" Is that really better than "In a couple of days, I am gonna ask that girl to marry me"......? oddly enough, it is the educators who refuse to acknowledge that the ways they learned a few decades ago are all but obsolete. |

Spelling, grammar, knowing how to use a knife and fork, when to say please and thank you, how and when to wash your hands, how to wait your turn, how to behave in a restaurant, showing respect for the elderly, showing compassion for the less fortunate,
say goodbye to all of it. |
