Topic: Spelling and grammar not important anymore? | |

Just be glad you don't experience 1337 speak on a regular basis here. hmm...googling now...but a little afraid. yes very glad we don't experience that..I would be even more lost than I am now. I was going to try to reply in 1337 speak but I don't even know where all those symbols are on my keyboard. p.s. To all the "proper english" police reading this post, please pardon any punctuation, spelling and/or grammar errors you may see. Please also dare not to correct. I am communicating that to you now to save you some time. this will be the signature line on all my post. You're new here. Give it some time and you'll realize not to take everything so seriously all the time. I know this was a more serious thread, but there's no need to feel offended by any of it. Hope you enjoy the site! |

Just be glad you don't experience 1337 speak on a regular basis here. what is 1337? This is taken from the urban dictionary leet speak 399 up, 32 down Originating in the early 1980's, leet speak was first used by hackers as a way to prevent their websites/newsgroups from being found by simple keyword searches. Leet speak grew and became popular in online games such as Doom in the early 1990's as a way of suggesting that you were a hacker (h4x0r), and therefore to be feared. Leet, or 1337, is a short form of "elite," commonly used by video gamers to suggest that they are skilled. Leet: l337 Hacker: h4x0r skills: s|<1llz Own: Pwn |

I think it has become less important...but not because they do not care...were living in a world where communication is TxT spk and most classic literature is presented in the form of movies

I think it has become less important...but not because they do not care...were living in a world where communication is TxT spk and most classic literature is presented in the form of movies Luckily, not all of us use text speak all the time. People do seem to get mad when I ask them to type out full words, though. |

I remember years ago it used to be... without proper grammar and spelling ...the best one can achieve is a minumum wage job.

Sadly, people can end up pretty high up in a company, yet not be able to write and communicate well at all.

I agree with your opening post SMS. Although I haven't been on sites in a long time, I do notice it seems to be "text" talk. Either that or they simply can not spell. It makes me sad.

I say it's personal preference. If it is important to you, then you will spend most of your time trying to correct someone else. Is that what you're looking to do? If not..then don't talk with that person just to save you some annoying moments.

If not..then don't talk with that person just to save you some annoying moments. What's important to me is to be able to understand what the person is saying. If their spelling/grammar interferes with that, I won't spend my time trying to correct them the whole time, but I will lose interest in trying to figure out what they're saying. |

That I do understand. The world have become a shortcut place for everything including internet typing. It is like a entire language within itself. The more you seem to use it, the more you take the shortcuts. I know I do it myself on a regular basis and find it comes natural sometimes. I play a lot of online games and that right there is a bad influence. Good luck :)

As long as I can actually understand someone well enough, I'll give them a chance. I just don't have the patience for constant text speak, though.
