Topic: Spelling and grammar not important anymore?

Sadly, no matter what anyone says, we cannot force people to use punctuation, spell correctly or use correct grammar.

On a site like this, I'm less likely to reply to an email if it takes a lot of effort to read through, though, as from experience, it won't get better after that.

Hi Sweet!waving When I post a reply to someone I think about two things.... I think about how many people will read my post and I think about the fact that my post is a reflection of me.....Grammar, spelling, and punctuation matter... shades

What ever happened to people learning to read and write and a bit of arithmetic?

The three R's are the essentials. From there, a typing class and a computer is all you need to learn stuff.

If you can't read and write, you can't get a college degree, unless you are paying someone to take your tests for you.

I hate texting shortcuts being used on forums. Use them on your phones if you must. I still hate them. I don't text. I think its stupid. You have a phone, call them and talk to them. geeeeze.

I'm not a great speller, but my browser has a spell check and I make corrections when I see mistakes.

For punctuation, at least use a capitol letter at the beginning of a sentence and a period at the end.

Education is partly responsible and parents too. I have a niece who could read before she went to first grade. No school was necessary. She was just incredibly nosy and wanted to learn.

And nobody knows how to count change anymore. The cash register does it for them. If the cash register stopped working they would not be able to give you the proper change.frustrated

I don't even use the texting shortcuts on my phone. Maybe that makes me weird?

 absolutely true !

I now tip the person at the drive thru coffee window, just to see how they handle the extra change. It *is* hilarious when you give them extra change other than what the register said they needed. drinker

True....

But, you can always try to recessitate a dead thread.

It's resuscitate.

If you don't like the thread, I'm sure you can find something more to your liking. That's not quite your style though.

I really like the line "my post is a reflection of me" -- because that's how I see it, too.

So I'm going to try to make sure that whatever I write is completely understandable -- and that means I'm going to try (it doesn't always work out that way, but....) to make sure everything is spelled properly, the grammar is correct, and the apostrophes are in the right places.

The occasional typo isn't going to put me off; but if your post looks like it was done by an aardvark stepping randomly and repeatedly on a keyboard, I'm going to have a hard time knowing how to respond.

I respect that. I don't text at all.

Maybe some of them have slight learning disabilities and have trouble with spelling. My son has a hard time with spelling but has graduated from high school. Should he distance himself from the world because of his struggle to spell correctly. I don't think so!

He could learn to use spell check.
Google chrome has spell check.

Most people who don't learn to read and write don't have learning disabilities.

The education system at one point changed their method of teaching reading from phonics to something else, and that new method did not work. Many people went all the way through school with poor reading skills.

Well... *this* just stopped me in my tracks frown

After the conversations here... he could come on this site and get constantly corrected for misspelling words, and *that* would be a form of bullying, wouldn't it? huh

Sometimes spell check does work. There are times when they can not spell the word close enough for spell check to help them out. He tried very hard in school and always got good grades in the special education department. It is so sad when people that think they are so educated, and choose to makes harsh judgments on someone that has learning difficulties.
