Don't Ask, Don't Tell Repeal Passes Senate Procedural Vote ANNE FLAHERTY | 12/18/10 11:58 AM WASHINGTON — In a landmark vote for gay rights, the Senate on Saturday voted to advance legislation that would overturn the military ban on openly gay troops known as "don't ask, don't tell." The 63-33 test vote all but guarantees the legislation will pass the Senate, possibly by day's end, and reach the president's desk before the new year. The House had passed an identical version of the bill, 250-174, earlier this week. Repeal would mean that, for the first time in American history, gays would be openly accepted by the military and could acknowledge their sexual orientation without fear of being kicked out. More than 13,500 service members have been dismissed under the 1993 law. Rounding up a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate was a historic victory for President Barack Obama, who made repeal of the 17-year-old policy a campaign promise in 2008. It also was a political triumph for congressional Democrats who struggled in the final hours of the postelection session to overcome GOP objections on several legislative priorities before Republicans regain control of the House in January. "As Barry Goldwater said, 'You don't have to be straight to shoot straight,'" said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., referring to the late GOP senator from Arizona. Even after the measure were to become law, the policy change wouldn't go into effect right away. Obama and his military advisers would have certify that the change wouldn't hurt the ability of troops to fight, and there would also be a 60-day waiting period. Some have predicted the process could take as long as a year before Bill Clinton-era policy is repealed. |

Why isn't it? Gay people are already in the military. Many who serve have no issues with it. Just because you don't want to be near gay people does not mean they should have to lie to be in the military.

Just because you don't want to be near gay people does not mean they should have to lie to be in the military. What does that have to do with the "might" of the nation? America was mighty (by any reasonable standard) before there was an official military, and still will be when the military-industrial complex collapses under its own ineptitude, wasteful spending, and archaic design. (and the sooner the military regime falls, the better for America and the world) True might comes from sound money and a stable economy-which we currently lack. When these are restored and American foreign interventionism/militarism ends, prosperity and greatness will return. |

I was anxious to get home from work today so I could check out the action - and my email was full of notices, it really happened.
Of course the repeal is not fully effective immediately, there is still the certification process. The whole point of enacting a legislative repeal over a judicial one (in the courts, was to allow for a 'controlled' enactment that would allow enough time for the military to make necesary adjustments and for all members of all ranks to undergo training/education. As these efforts are completed each branch or division will be certified (ready for complete integration). Since the Report (study findings) and major military heads have both concluded that this process should not take long and can can be accoplished even in this time of war, then we shouldn't expect to long a wait. If that process should become a new platform for stalling (blocking integration efforts),while military personal are still not allowed to serve openly, more legal battles my ensue. Overall, the Repeal is done, now it becomes a process and only time will tell how it will all work out. Thanks singmesweet for being the first to post the good news. THE BAD NEWS - The DREAM Act has failed again, but it won't be stopped, it will appear again and again until or unless other legislation makes it unnecessary. |

Why isn't it? Gay people are already in the military. Many who serve have no issues with it. Just because you don't want to be near gay people does not mean they should have to lie to be in the military. Why would this make the military go downhill? Why would this make the US the laughing stock of the world? You do realize that many other countries allow gay people to serve in their military, right? Countries that allow homosexuals to serve in the military * 1.1 Albania * 1.2 Argentina * 1.3 Australia * 1.4 Austria * 1.5 Belgium * 1.6 Canada * 1.7 Colombia * 1.8 Czech Republic * 1.9 Denmark * 1.10 Estonia * 1.11 Finland * 1.12 France * 1.13 Germany * 1.14 Greece * 1.15 Ireland * 1.16 Israel * 1.17 Italy * 1.18 Japan * 1.19 Lithuania * 1.20 Luxembourg * 1.21 Malta * 1.22 The Netherlands * 1.23 New Zealand * 1.24 Norway * 1.25 Peru * 1.26 Philippines * 1.27 Poland * 1.28 Romania * 1.29 Russia * 1.30 Serbia * 1.31 Slovenia * 1.32 South Africa * 1.33 Spain * 1.34 Sweden * 1.35 Switzerland * 1.36 Taiwan * 1.37 United Kingdom o 1.37.1 Bermuda * 1.38 Uruguay |

The good news is the dream act failed to pass......I say this because it isn't fair to allow illegals citizenship when so many others had to go through proper channels.......just because they made it across the line doesn't mean they should be granted citizenship
As for don't ask don't tell....if the government is going to grant sexual orientation protection as a protected class then they need to protect it completely or remove it as a protected class one way or the other.....I don't agree with half asssssing anything so whether this is good for them or not I don't know..... |

Just because you don't want to be near gay people does not mean they should have to lie to be in the military. They shoudn't have to hide who they are to serve their country. They are fighting and dying for freedoms they up until now haven't had themselves. |

I worked with a couple of gay men when I did Loss Prevention, one of them even saved my life. Some of them are really tough. |

You don't know if what is true? That other countries also allow gay people to serve in the military? If you don't believe it, do a little research. I'm sure you will find that the US is certainly not the only country that allows it.
