This is more along the lines of Greek Myths.......oh you people so reach it's making me laugh hysterically......

You think that Christianity isn't along the line of Greek Myths?

No you have me laughing hysterically. laugh

Winged angels? Demons with red skin and pointed tails? The God truning people into pillars of salt? Flooding out the entire planet to flush away the sinners?

Oh, yeah, and the need for blood sacrifices?

How is it any different from the Greek Myths? It's every bit as incredulous.

Again abra your warped sense of what it says in the Bible....no wonder you don't get it.....

Always the same blah blah blah.....please come up with something new.......because this is boring me.

Then close your book of fairytales and come up with something new yourself, because you sound like a broken record.

To the OP ... also read "The God Delusion" - Richard Dawkins

A bit of a weighty tome, but worth it.

The reason I was asking, was that I was doing the usual google thing - refuting some ridiculous claim by a god-squadder, when I stumbled upon this ...

I do not believe that any man can be justly punished or rewarded on account of his belief.

But I do believe in the nobility of human nature; I believe in love and home, and kindness and humanity; I believe in good fellowship and cheerfulness, in making wife and children happy.

I believe in good nature, in giving to others all the rights that you claim for yourself.

I believe in free thought, in reason, observation and experience. I believe in self-reliance and in expressing your honest thought. I have hope for the whole human race. What will happen to one, will, I hope, happen to all, and that, I hope, will be good.

Above all, I believe in Liberty." - Robert Ingersoll

It struck a chord

So I delved a little deeper, and found this ...

The Essence of the Humanist Ethical Tradition

In three words: freedom / happiness / virtue

In one sentence: The World is my country, all mankind are my brethren, and to do good is my religion - Thomas Paine

We live in a natural universe, and supernatural beings like gods, devils, ghosts and witches either do not exist. Nor does Heaven or Hades exist. Everything that does exist and everything that happens occurs through chance, necessity and choice.

While atheism is merely the absence of belief, humanism is a positive attitude to the world, centred on human experience, thought, and hopes.

The British Humanist Association and The International Humanist and Ethical Union use similar emblems showing a stylised human figure reaching out to achieve its full potential.

Humanists believe that human experience and rational thinking provide the only source of both knowledge and a moral code to live by.

They reject the idea of knowledge 'revealed' to human beings by gods, or in special books.

Humanism is a democratic and ethical life stance, which affirms that human beings have the right and responsibility to give meaning and shape to their own lives.

It stands for the building of a more humane society through an ethic based on human and other natural values in the spirit of reason and free inquiry through human capabilities.

It is not theistic, and it does not accept supernatural views of reality.

International Humanist and Ethical Union

So ... I think I will read some more about this ... sounds kind of interesting drinker

I'm glad you brought this up Belushi because as much as I post I still notice that most people don't understand where I'm coming from.

Been around your posts two years now James, and I kinda got that ... lol

And to be perfectly honest about it I would rather Atheism be true then have the biblical picture of God be true. Atheism would actually be more humane and than the biblical picture IMHO.

So, if you think atheism more humane, what are your thoughts on the tenets of humanism?

Was baptized Lutheran though never really practiced, as my mom's side has never been terribly religious or went to church much (my late grandfather aside). Became Catholic at the behest of my dad in 2002 (had been going t church with him somewhat regularly before that, dad's side very devout), and stayed that way till last year or so, when I became skeptical of Catholicism and what it taught.

After thinking about it some, decided to leave as I felt I couldn't in good conscience remain in it. Now I'm not sure what I believe, I do believe in God still, but not sure about churches. Very skeptical of them, since it seems like they all teach different things. It's hard to know who is speaking truth and who's not in that sense.

Why did you become catholic because of your dad?
Did you believe in the catholic edicts?

Well I always say it does not hurt to believe in something. Thats really the meaning in life, that there is a afterlife of some sort. Now if this is a god, or reincarnation or whatever, but I do feel that we need a sense of purpose.
I personally go with my gut on a lot of things. (My inner voice my mom used to call it when I was a kid)
I used to be a strong believer of God, but when u go to college and u hear how Christianity originated it kinda messes things up. Well it did for me and a lot of other people I have talked to.

So, what do you believe in now, if not christianity?

Belushi's photo
Fri 08/22/08 10:40 AM

to make oneself feel like they are connected, by spirit, revelation, or any enlightenment...its all intrapersonal...i hope to attain my sense of self worth by finding truth...not answers

So which belief system were you indoctrinated initially, and what are your beliefs now?

Why the switch?

Belushi's photo

Taking your current belief system into account, I am interested in people's opinions on how they got there, IF they were part of another belief system first.

I know Spider has relocated his belief, Abra has too, but how did you decide that your first set of beliefs needed adjustment - Not just to Spider and Abra, but to all who have changed (I am trying not to use the word swap) from one system to another ...

does that make sense?

1. I was taught that God was all loving, all knowing supreme being. That's all fine and good, but it seems to me, from the Bible... Be good and do exactly what he says and don't sin...don't even think of sinning or this all loving God is going to throw me into the pit of hell. God is supposed to be like our father, if this is true, it is my OPINION that he is saying, "I love you unconditionally, now behave or I'm throwing you into the furnace... So much for love....

2. In the Bible, incest is wrong. I think its wrong anyways, but here's my question..
A. When God created this world...it was Adam And Eve. They had to populate the WHOLE world. Someone had to have been doing something.
B. Noah and the Ark. Noah and his family again were left to populate the whole planet...Now how do you think they did this?

3. If God is all knowing, which he may be. Why would he created a planet with such wicked people just to destroy it...then to rebuild it again? Didn't he see this comming?

4. It also says not to be vain, pompus, etc... Lucifer was supposedly the best Angel in Heaven and then he thought he was better than God so God kicked him out.. Maybe God didn't like the competition.

~Sorry guys I have grown up in a church and see so many hypocrites...I could tell you so many stories...
Like the time a church elder danced up front and said God cured him of smoking...only the next week he sat in his van and smoked.
Like the time I was young and stupid and got wasted and my mom took me to the pastor's house "to get the demon out," they prayed and nothing happened.
Like the time my older cousin was messed up on drugs and talking funny, my mom called our preacher to perform an excersom...
Like instead of parenting me and dealing with me like a person..God was the answer for everything.
~~~I guess I am a little cynical and a little miserable...forgive me. Don't me to church bash.
Dont worry about it. What is happening to you has happened to a lot of very wise people.
They have looked at their religious structures and questioned them.
When the answers made no sense and were illogical, they rejected them.
Ask your questions here and you will get a million sets of answers.
Because to be honest there is no right answer.
As a non-believer, Im happy that there is no right answer. Its an answer that is personal to you.
This is what a belief system should be. Not thrust upon you and the people around you, but developed and examined every day.
Check out Humanism, its a pretty cool place to be.
Sorry if this is getting off topic but Tribo, I was spinning through the channels last night and a movie called "Noah's Ark" was on. I’m not sure if it was in the theatre at one point but it was a large scale production with special effects. Noah was played by that actor Jon Voight. It was alright I guess. Kind of funny in parts. The ark itself was enormous but probably about the size of like an aircraft carrier today. It was kind of interesting to see like an actual depiction of it and how they had all the animals on board. Also god, evidently, "relieved" the animals of their urge to procreate during the journey but not so much with the humans....:tongue:
If the dimensions were correct John Voight would have been the skipper of a medium sized oil tanker ...
How romantic!
Although baby oil at the right time and in the right place can have a few godly references utteredblushing
Yes, if I applied faulty logic and false definitions, I would come to the same conclusion as you. But since I use the correct definitions and proper logic, I have come to a different conclusion.
flowerforyou
You're doing just find Spider. Just keep moving forward a little bit at time. You've already discovered that God can't be omnipotent, that's a good start. bigsmile
By your silly definition, God couldn't be omnipotent. By your definitions, your god couldn't exist at all. But Christians and Jews have a God who does exist and isn't made up with a foundation of shifting sand.
Dont forget the Muslims - they have a god that exists too.
oh, and the Shintoists
and the Buddhists
and not forgetting Zoroastrians believe in one God too ...
Nope, just the Christians and Jews.
Why just them?
Thats not nice.
After all, Some of those religions are older than christianity.
... and if you are prepared to accept that christianity and judaism are allowed to have god, then you HAVE to accept the existance of islam as he is the little brother of christianity, or the son of judaism.
curious minds want to know.
just a cup of tea and some light religious chat would suffice - beautiful day my friend, how is it there?
Its 915am, the sun has risen and has warmed the air to 26 degC.
It will be 40degC by lunchtime.
The blue water and the soft sandy beaches beckon, however, I must go and look for gainful employment.
But from one end of town to the other on a bicycle will take me an hour.
After that .... MOVE OVER BIKINI CLAD BEAUTIES .... Belushi is on the beach!
(no mention of japanese whaling fleets, or rolling me back into the water to keep my skin wet, will be entertained) laugh laugh
Do you honestly think that you will get a resolution to this?
Spider will come in and throw his knowledge about, Abra will refer to pantheism, Wouldee will get his handbag out and dust off his hankie with Abra, JB will get us all beamed to Alpha Centuri and I will make snide comments about how all christians are sheep.
Same old, same old ....
