I’ve always been fascinated by how our ancestors created things by hand out of absolutely nothing from ancient pottery techniques to raw tool making. If you could instantly master any historical, old-world craft or art style, what would it be? For me, it's definitely something raw and grounded in history.

Well, I once wanted to make a corn dolly for Lammas/ Lughnasad harvest festival.
Failed abysmally, hihi. But I tried! Gave me serious respect for basket makers/weavers though! It looks so easy, but it isn't. I've made a bracelet from beads I made from red rose petals. The one time I used my little cauldron on the stove :) I had doubts it'd work, but it did! I wanted to dye fabric with woad. I so love that colour! It's quite a lot of work and you have to make a vat. Traditionally a urine vat but that is extremely smelly so I used the alternative; soda ash. Unfortunately I couldn't keep the vat at a constant and warm enough temperature so it didn't work out... I'd love to learn various bushcraft skills. Making cordage from nettles for instance, although I'm not sure I'd have the patience for that. Various firemaking skills, making bow & arrows etc. |

I’ve always been fascinated by how our ancestors created things by hand out of absolutely nothing from ancient pottery techniques to raw tool making. If you could instantly master any historical, old-world craft or art style, what would it be? For me, it's definitely something raw and grounded in history. I crossed paths with an indigenous person some years ago who was in a desperate way.. he was homeless and hadn't eaten much in some time.. something about him encouraged my trust and I invited him to come to dinner and then to stay with us.. after dinner he was so appreciative that he insisted on doing something to repay our generosity.. he noticed I had beads that my daughter and I made bracelets with.. he pulled out deer sinew and proceeded to show me how to make dreamcatchers.. along with explaining the symbolism.. when he finished his first one (it was a small one) he took out sweetgrass and proceeded to show me the blessing and how to connect someone to the protection of the dreamcatcher.. over the next few weeks he stayed with us, he taught me how to make jewerly as well, as his forefathers did before him, centuries past.. I was humbled and honored he chose to repay me in this way.. and still make both today as a nod to this ancient craft.. |

Flint knapping.
So in case I get lost in the woods I can make a spear. And how to fend off a sabre tooth tiger with a flint tipped spear. |
