Feminism has been around a lot longer than the 70's. I would say the suffragettes were feminists and there are probably other examples throughout history. A feminist promotes the right for women to choose how to live their life. I don't really associate it with men-hating or bra-burning (I love men but I do have some sympathy for the bra burners - damn uncomfortable things). Its girl-power. Change that tyre, drive that truck, be in the armed forces, be president or prime minister or whatever. A feminist has true grit - independence - she's confident but can also be very feminine. For me, feminism and femininity are synonymous.

Yes, but to me there's another thing going on now. Now you often are EXPECTED to do 'man things', which to me isn't right either. Much of the old roles were okay in principle, just the part that women were regarded 'inferior', and thus a lack of respect, was missing.
And that's where I and feminism don't see eye to eye (I think). To me it's about MUTUAL respect and equality. But to me that does NOT mean a woman is supposed to do man's work and vice versa. If she (or he) chooses to do so, fair enough. But these days women are expected to be able to do whatever a guy can do, but sorry to say: man and woman ARE different! Not just physically, but also how we are wired emotionally, mentally etc.
To me the equality is about embracing each other INCLUDING these differences, and respecting them. Respecting that I cannot do the physical hard work a bloke can do, without ridiculing me for it. Respecting that a guy may not be able to make a 6 course meal and have the food of each course ready at the same time etc etc etc.
We ARE different, we are supposed to be different, because when we are whole as a man and as a woman, we complement each other. That's the idea ...
And to me feminism always slightly reeks of women being able to do whatever a bloke can do (and vice versa). Why? Unisex is wrong.

Maybe my view of feminism is askew, but all in all I think I'm on a different track than feminists, even though there are similarities and overlaps of course.
To me it's about equality without losing the typical masculine/feminine qualities.

That is right. Women are now expected to do man's work. We should choose to have that option. This is what equality created. And that women are now expected to work. No one can survive on a one income household or barely. This is another sinister way we have been duped.

Yes ... and although I agree that women should be able to work and/or to pursue a career if she wants to, it doesn't really quite work out so well in the long run.. at first it's OK, but it's mostly children that are duped by this. So now we got entire generations of young adults that had to grow up without a mom at home to just be there for them with tea and cookies, to listen to their stories of what happened at school etc etc. Now it's mom coming home the same time as dad, both tired, rushing to make dinner, no one that has time for the kids anymore, not really. And kids need that time, need that care, attention and love.

And yes, what you said, it's now basically not optional anymore for a woman to work if you want to make ends meet, she has to... again it's mostly children that are duped. And that'll come back and bite us in the @$$... - already is biting us in the @$$.

For instance, a lot of older people whining that young adults / teens don't care about anything and anyone no more, don't show respect ... but what ya expect? No one was there for them when they needed care... when they needed a mom who listened to them when they had a hard day at school, were bullied by the neighbourhood's a-hole etc...
you reap what you sow ...

Why can't households survive on just one income anymore? I'm not agreeing or disagreeing but how can it be due to feminism?

Err... because life got more expensive. Taxes have gone up, everything just costs an awful lot more. When I was a kid, it was normal and easy for a family to get by well on the man's income only. That's just not possible anymore, unless a man makes more than average.

So not directly to do with feminism, but governments taking advantage of women working and ppl having more money to spend. Probably also to do with keeping the economy balanced, avoid inflation etc etc. But that's beyond my wheelhouse ...

a lot of it's tied into your... average cost of living yes.... when I started buying property.. you could pick up a 1400 square foot home.. for roughly 220 240.... three years later sold the same house for 490,000.... so if you want a 2600 square foot home..
. you're going to shell out around $600,000..... try paying that on one income...... now throw in the easy availability of credit.... add all the electronic gadgets.... add two vehicles at roughly 40,000 apiece...
.. throw in one or two holidays a year..

.. don't forget about school fees for the kids....

. and all the other crap that we all want.....yes.. women need to work..
but she should be paid as much as a man.... we are no longer giving women jobs as a favor....
.. thinking that the man is the primary breadwinner. so he deserves full pay..

.. we are all living longer.. and the powers that be want us to be giant consumers..... it is going to take both men and women to keep things going... long gone are the days where mom can afford to be at home..
.... although when she was at home communities were safer..... the housewives were the.. neighborhood watch....

.. personally I have never looked at women as not being equal...
. in some ways I think they are more superior than men.....
... they are relentless.. well organized.
very dedicated to their cause.
.. can be kind hearted and generous with their time....
.. they are very much long term thinkers..
.. Now add everything else that a woman is.. mother teacher accountant housekeeper... cook caregiver child raising.... nurture and lover....hmm.. I'm surprised you women just haven't nuked all of us men already...... now I suppose you would.
if you can lift heavy loads and kill spider for yourself....lol..

.. We R Who We R.... women are soft and tender.. men are rugged and strong..... there is a reason for this..yes.... but to think she is the fairer sex.. And does not need to be treated equally... is a huge. oversight

If women must work, does it mean a man needs 2 wives, one to bring a paycheck and one to do traditional women's work? What woman would want to be the paycheck girl?

my wife ex wife.. enjoyed wearing slacks.. dress slacks.. not just because it made her *** look great.. if you know what I mean..lol... some women enjoy being the breadwinner.. enjoy working.. I think most women do actually.... keeping the house is very rewarding and nice... but being out in the workforce has rewards... that you do not get home.... well unless you're sleeping with the boss that is...lol

no it means we must both work and figure out how to juggle all the rest between us.

Why does woman's work still go unpaid? This is so crappy, it's the problem.

Exactly! My late wife and I shared the housework and the childcare.
