i just want to see if this troop surge will work. most of the problems they have over there i think can be fixed by their government getting their **** together and being a true government of the people. until that happens though, nothing will ever change.

Exactly. I believe the surge has worked, but the Iraqi government has failed to step up over the past five years due to cowardice, corruption and incompetance. I'm not sure what we can do to fix their government, but we have to do something or if we leave, they will sink and become more dangerous than before.

don't know if this was for me fanta but i'm not talking about a governemnt that meets our expectations. i was talking about a government that meets their needs as a fledgling democracy that is battling sectarian violence.

It wasn't directed at you king, but who says a democracy is what they want?

Us? We have constructed this government because we expect them to be a beacon of democracy in the ME!

They are fighting a civil war and we are standing right square in the middle, trying to force democracy upon them!

If they wanted it then they would cooperate not squabble. If they wanted it they would take care of the business of government!

They aren't doing jack, the government is useless and if we left it would fall, being quickly replaced by a government they chose!

Only thing is, that government probably wouldn't be a democracy and would not meet our expectations!

Who cares if Iran gets it? It used to all be Persia before the British split it up anyway!

If it caused a war in the region,, who cares? At least they would be occupied with each other, and we wouldn't have to worry about them messing with us for awhile!

Maybe they'd annihilate each other and Israel too!!!

thanks for clearing that up fanta. i agree with you about maybe democracy isn't what they want but it is what they have for the moment. i never did like the fact that they didn't have elections til after the basic government positions were set up with hand picked iraqi's in place. who's to say that if the U.S. hadn't nudged them in that direction that they would have chosen something else.
as far as them squabbleing over it, we do the same thing. i don't recall anyone not wanting a democratic system.
