Topic: A Criminal Tax rate!!!!!!

Just found out that the "Sin" tax on Tobbacco products is jumping from 146% to well over 200%.

I personally roll my own to avoid that kind of taxation on pre-rolled tobacco. Now, beggining April 1, the tax on a pound of bagged tobacco will be $25.

That means, my $12 bag of tobacco will now cost $40!!!!

I realize that non smokers will say.."It is for your own good"

Just consider this....suppose they levied this same tax rate for other unhealthy things...like fast food, sodas, candy or pasteries.

Suppose your $6 dollar lunch from McDonalds was gonna cost you $18.

To me, it seems completely unjustifiable to level these criminal tax rates at a minority section of the populace.

I am p*ssed about it and will now order all my stuff from overseas...the shipping and handling is far less than the stupidly unfair taxes that my own gov't is casually handing down.

just think about all those that will quit smoking and the revenue that they used to get from it will drop.

The customers are buying out the Gambler brand bag tobacco here because Monday the rate will jump sky high. Our little tobacco outlet is not sure if he can stay in business. When I bought my carton, yesterday the sales lady was saying, "Just throw them at me." She said she just works here. I know it will affect her job.

Exactly...that is the precise reason I will now send my American money over seas. I would prefer to do business with the Virginia tobacco farmers but, since our govt ain't gonna show no love...I will leave off doing business with them and look to the ones who do want my business.

drive down to the n.carolina hills. it grows like weeds down there. the farmers dont even keep a close eye on it. pic your own and then learn the growing process. hang in your garage and let it dry. then you can enjoy your rolling time all by yourself. no tax there.

I'm going to Canada in April and papersmile tells me that cigarettes are $10 a pack. Here in Texas they are $5

I think I'm gonna switch back to smoking a pipe. The tobacco is a lot cheaper

Hate to break it to you Quiet.....that same tax is gonna apply to all forms of tobacco including pipe tobacco....(I love my brandy and cherry soaked pipe tobacco)

It will also apply to rolling papers, filtered tubes and everything that applies to the tobacco industry.

Just ticks me off that, by rolling my own and shopping smart...a carton was only costing me $7.68.

now, that same carton will cost well over $30!

It is piracy.

At least in Canada...thier monster tax rates subsidize socialized medicine. What will our tax rates subsidize?.....bailing out Fortune 500 executives........

I do agree its piracy

I have a problem with taxing a particular segment of the population for their behavior. its kind of a class war

and I'll be damned if they will force me to quit.
Mexico isnt that far away to buy cheap cigarettes

I heard it on the news a couple of months ago. They were warning everyone it was going to happen by April. There ia already a 1 dollar tax on a pack, now there will be another, making that 2 dollars.

A portion of the cig prices (at least here) goes to a public health fund. Arranged to help those that will become sick from smoking.

Amen Quiet!

I have already been checking on line. The Mexican border towns are aware of what is about to go down and are already increasing thier prices.....same with Canada.

But, ordering from the Mexican interior and south America is much cheaper.

Still checking the options...but, even Eastern European or Asian smokes will be much cheaper to import than going down to the local convenience store.

(I have found Camels for less than $10 per carton if you order more than 9) + $1.97 s/h.)

when I was in New Mexico, I got cigarettes from the Apache reservations.
They dont charge taxes at all and I could get Marlboros for $2 a pack. I may have to make some road trips and buy em in bulk haha

Right now, I am still researching "Cheap Discount Cigarettes" and "Bagged tobacco"...when I find the best deal, I will post it.

Krupa,

I thought the tax was .60 cents a pack. That's what I read and that's what the sign on the smoke shop says.

True. But...that's a drop in the bucket when comparing medical costs.

it's different by state also

Texas legislature passed a massive tax increase on tobacco

actually they passed it on alcohol too. That is gonna be going up also. They are trying to make up for that by allowing liquor sales on Sunday

the Baptists are up in arms over that. They are afraid that more liquor sales will lead to dancing and card playing

I didn't know it was by state. I thought it was what Obama was doing and the monies would be going to health care.

It's for sure .60 cents a pack here.

I'm quitting anyway before July. scared I need to do that for my health.

hahahaha We can't have more dancing and card playing, can we? lol
