Josh, do you anything at all about eating disorders? Who gets them and why?

to show u its pointless
like if there was a "counting grass blades" topic u know? i mean whther or not women get airbrushed should have no bearing on a child or a grown person if their parents did a good enough job raising them, sure theres always going to be envy, but there also needs to be realistic point of views, NUTRITIONAL HEALTH ADVICE AVALIABLE!!!!!! i mean come on those diseases u speak of are counter intuitive of losing weight and had their parents taught them that they wouldnt do that crap

Hmmm...I see that you don't have any children. Have you taken any psychology classes?

actually ive been raising my neice since she was 2 for the past 8 years, so i do know what im talkin about, and its all about giving them the right mind set

I found this on the American Pediatric Association site:

"Societal influences also contribute to this illness. Increasingly, Westernized culture portrays thinness as a coveted physical ideal associated with happiness, vitality, and well being.

Endless images of unrealistically thin models and actors in all form of media promote body dissatifaction which is one of the strongest risk factors for the development of disordered eating."

We can do our best with raising our children, but it's very difficult to compete with what the media sells and the children's self image and their peer pressure.

Go to any children's hospital and you will see children that have this disease. They look like Holocaust survivors.

I do not believe things will never change.

that was a double negative...im not mr grammar here (obviously) but atleast try, and things will change but not all things, or atleast not in this lifetime

Well I may not use perfect grammar but at least I am able to refrain from using words like retarded and stupid while discussing an issue.

Look im sorry if ive offended u but ur trying to make an illogical statement by blaming magazines for a girls anorexia i mean it all starts with parenting, a child is only a reflection of his or her childhood and experiences, so if momma puts to much stalk in these magazines than so are the daughters, fact of life

oh sunshine, so misguided and wrong

Anorexia is an eating disorder where people starve themselves - it is a child's/adult's distorted view of themselves.

Magazines and media and how they portray women are major contributing factors.

You said, "so if momma puts to much stalk in these magazines than so are the daughters, fact of life"

That comment is so untrue. There are many societal factors!

I've worked in hospitals and also in psych. wards. I've studied it in college. It is a disease in the DSM book - Diagnostic and Statistical Manuel. These people look in the mirror and see a fat person.

I do not blame magazines. I said the images of women portrayed by the media are a contributing factor in the increase in eating disorders. And I did not come to this conclusion on my own. Ut is generally accepted by the medical community that treats these patients.

By the way you spelled "stock" wrong. Sorry, couldn't resist. laugh

It's not the parents' fault!!

That's like saying Autism is the parents' fault.

I guess you know more then the doctors.

no autism is genetic and a lot deeper than anorexia, and honestly babe some doctors are as smart as a bag of rocks, anorexia is more like a mental disorder

For many years people blamed the parents for their child's Autism.

Yes, anorexia is a mental disorder. Hence ....doctors.

It is NOT genetic.

Josh, since you are raising a child, please check the American Pediatric Association website regarding this subject. It discusses the causes.flowerforyou

Anyway i thought you said this was a stupid topic and yet you keep debating it. We are not going to agree on this and I think my patience with you is exhausted.

i will thank you but honestly im highly skeptical of doctors i put a lot of faith and effort in to preventive type medicine such as strict diets and exercise, to go along with keeping all lines off comunication open amd keeping honesty the most important thing no matter what

o and ruth thats fine be stubborn that ur choice, cuz im the same and wont be convinced that a magazine is gonna make neice become anorexic, wont happen

it's not the topic or debate that is exhausting.. what's exhausting is trying to persuade B to see A's side... or B continuing to try to persuade A to change his or her mind... If both A and B are firm in their beliefs thats fine.. discuss it.. bring up facts.. whatever A and B think.. but just because A and B dont' end the discussion with the same views doesn't mean it's a waste of time..

my parents are married.. their 30th wedding anniversary is coming up in march. my mom is overweight.. she doesnt b!tch about it.. she accepts herself for who she is.. my dad loves her as much overweight as he ever could if she were model thin.. my parents spend their lives telling me that they love me.. *granted i did have middle child syndrome.. but that had nothing to do with my weight.. just my invisibility at sporting events etc*
my mother did not read cosmo.. vougue.. any of the traditional magazines.. she read taste of home.. and things like that..

at the age of 13.. i was the biggest girl in my class. tallest.. and fattest.. i stoped eating.. my friends all read cosmo...teen.. seventeen.. i saw the skinny models, i saw my friends.. all skinny and beautiful..
i was never good enough.. in my head..

i took small enough portions that if i spread the food around my plate it looked as if i ate..
my anorexia was not the fault of my parents.. it was the fault of my mental image of myself..
my friends all had bf's.. i was alone.. my friends were all sking.. i was alone.. my friends all had the perfect lives.. i was alone.. thats how things went in my head.. my mom realized some time later what i was doing..
oddly enough.. by then i was so hungry that a good grounding took care of it. but the thoughts are still there..

It is not being stubborn to not change my mind just because you do not agree with me. I am ending the debate with you because samara is right. We disagree and nothing I have provided will change your mind and vice versa.
