Topic: Giving Up smoking I did it so can You | |

I no longer allow anyone to smoke in my home or car. I used to allow it until recently. I repainted and there is no cigeratte smell in my home. I go to wal-mart and walk. It is to hot down here to get out and walk I usually walk all over the store at least once and normally spend all the money I saved on cigerattes. I am doing fairly well on my inhalers. I also do all my own house work and that helps keep the lungs functioning.

im on a mix of commits or nicorette 4 g since i did 2 packs a day... usually i do 4-5 losengers or a mix of 4 -5 per day not this day ive done 6-7! but that is like week 7 anyways... still im sliding backwards today. my life is pretty stressful but not as bad as it has been in the past... need some possitive in my life such as not flunking again! and a new job would sure help? applied for another one today...hope i get a call cause my ego is about going down the drain and i have gained about 3 lbs.. still better than all that smoke in my lungs but dont know feeling weak today... i dont know any different smoked when i was 12... quit only once for i think 11 or 13 days cheated though that time had like 4 smokes maybe.... none this time its the best time so far this time... gonna die if i dont quit after 33 yrs! 3lb of weight don't worry but don't let it get worse. This is due to substituting a snack for a cigarette. Drink water instead. Any time you feel like a smoke put your running shoes on shorts and T shirt go for a run or a brisk walk . That normally gets rid of the craving as well as the 3 lb extra. Do not substitutes snacks specially sweet stuff for a cigarette Good luck Buttons |

I have been on Disability for the COPD since 1999. I took all the breathing tests and they determined I was in the range that rendered me totally disabled. I have been given both Social security disability and 100% service connected disability by the VA. I have never had any problem breathing at night or anything. I just can't do anything strenious because I can not get enought air in my lungs because I have lost the elasticity in them. I do seen to breath a little beter since I quit smoking. I still have to take espirtory function tests and lung x-rays every 2 years. I guess I will be like that for the rest of my life. I try not to let it get me down. I do what I can. I still do my own cooking and cleaning. It just takes me more time to do it.

I have not smoked since July 1st 1999. I have Been smoke free now for 9 and 1/2 years. I am beginning to feel like my lungs are improving some. I can do things now that I could not a few years ago. I do some exercises for my lungs that I get from a magazine that I get for people with COPD. They do help.

The original idea is from my 7 year old twin boys last year see the "what do you think" post. There is someone who appreciates a good sense of humour thank God. Back to smoking |

Every time you feel like a smoke put those lovely shorts on and go for a jog the craving will go away and will get less after 3 months. The important thing is not to give in as to start again you will have to endure the same pain. Do not substitute comfort foods as it will make you put weight on Good luck and hang in there. |

Buttons, my COPD was caused by a combination of smoking and chemicals I encountered in the Military. I was a diesel mechanic and some of the chemicals we used to clean parts were very powerful, and the doctors said that played a role in the problem with my lungs. I did smoke for 35 years. I started when I was around 15 and smoked until I was 50. I do not struggle with the urge as much as I used to. I can even go to a bar or resturant and not even think about smoking. I also gave up drinking and I can go to a bar and have a soda and just mingle with people. I do feel much better and I have gained some weight. As you can see in the photo my midsection is a little big. You hang in there and don't give in to the cravings

Thank you Robert. Sounds like you are to. We all need some help with the smoking to get us through the tough times. My daughter is my crutch. I quit when she was in Middle school and I still remember her telling me that I smell better when I didn't smoke. That really helps.

Jeeze, everyone is doing so well and I had to go fall off the wagon again after 3 mo.
Ill jump back on soon enough, but it sure stings. I had a traumatic experience the other day and started up again. I guess Im just a weenie. I have the strength to quit and keep it up for a while but as soon as my life ges hard off I go. |
