I've been teaching my 9 year old son German since he was born, along with English.

He's almost conversational now (in both! lol), and almost fluent.

He's learning Spanish (in school!), and I've been working on French with him.

He doesn't like French..lol

I commend you.drinker

this is true Jace, but how do we know these people in the original post don't know English?
when you were living abroad, would you not, when in a group of other Americans, tend to speak English?

That's what this post was about.

I have NO idea if whatshername's group of people in front of her in the grocery store were native or visiting or what. Personally, I don't mind if someone's speaking Spanish to someone else speaking Spanish.

I wouldn't go up to someone in Germany and speak English to them (stores, service, restaurants, etc) expecting them to understand me. But yeah, when someone came up and spoke English to me, I used to respond in English. My little tiny point is the duality of the languages. THAT I think we could all appreciate. (=

drinker drinker agree with you

without having all the facts one should not "assume" because they hear others speaking a different language that they dont speak English flowerforyou

English is just one of many immigrant languages in this country. NOT the official language.
