This is the last thing I am going to say on this thread. I lived in the Miami area for 8 yrs. Every where you went all you heard was spanish. There are stores down there, that if you don't speak spanish you don't get service. My point to all of this was that in respect to the country that you are living in, working in, speak the language. I actually knew someone who lived here 30 yrs and could not speak english because down in the Miami area you don't have to speak english. Please understand I do not have anything against someone speaking thier native tongue. Like I said before I speak German, but out of respect to this country I speak english when I am around other americans. Spend 1 year in Miami and then tell me you feel the same. I should not have to be able to speak spanish to get a job. Until you have experienced what I am speaking about you will never understand. You do realize that English is not the official language of the United States? If you are experiencing so much difficulty where you are living, wouldn't learning Spanish make sense? It's much easier to learn than English. |

My grammatical Spanish is a little rusty, but I think I made my point. te amo |

I do my own yard and house work, thanks. But you are correct, if I were uneducated and working at a low level job I would be worried. But this thread was never about illegals. It was about people who speak Spanish. Are you saying that all people who speak Spanish are illegals? That is a huge and unfounded assumption. |

Why should I , an american, have to learn another language just to make my life easier |

Where I grew up... people spoke lots of different languages. Never once did I ever think that was anything but way cool. I grew up in an area full of education, cultural, and understanding and respect of that. I think I might feel the same way about Miami. You never know...
I continue to feel that way. I respect, admire, and try to learn from others. I do not feel irritated they do not speak English. Instead, I imagine how their life was different from mine and what a small world it truly is. We are all human. I got bigger things to worry about. |

Carlos Mencia said it best "They are not taking your job, or even a job you would want". That being said how many of you would like to stand on the corner selling fruit in the heat of summer, or mowing acre's and acre's of grass in 100 degree heat? It's not like they are taking corporate jobs here, they are taking jobs that make money and no one else wants to do.

ok...my dimes worth here
technically the true americans are the native american idians and in some states...mexicans were there first...TEXAS for one. I am born and raised Texan and many here speak spanish...it's their right. i agree that when going to a country one should learn the language that is majorly used but we have people from all over the world here. they should try to learn english because that is the most common language spoen for the sake of communication. but in america...they are also free to speak in their own languages. |

You know the easy way around this? Learn Latin, it's the basis for the majority of languages used (Greek is helpful) then you can put two and two together to figure out what they're saying...confuses them though, how you can understand what they say but not speak to them...irritating too.

The United States does not have an official language, but English is spoken by about 82% of the population as a native language.
On May 18, 2006, the Senate voted on an amendment to an immigration reform bill that would declare English the national language of the United States[3]. The immigration reform bill itself, S. 2611, was passed in the Senate on May 25, 2006, but expired when the Senate and the House of Representatives failed to agree upon the amendments in conference. The Spanish language is the second-most common language in the country, spoken by almost 30 million people (or 13% of the population) in 2005. Sorry Rose, this was too good not to jack. |
