Was is illegal tomorrow isn't necesarily illegal today. First they make you register, then they tac on laws... No magazines over a certain size. Low capacity guns only, only alound a certain type of ammo, etc. Eventually semi automatics are illegal. Before you know it, handguns are illegal because they are too easy to conceal. Then when most guns are off the street, governments just make them illegal.

It's how it goes. Over years. But that's still kinda besides the point.

My point is if the government can't trust me with my guns why should i trust them with theirs?

I do count my blessings though. The state of maine does not require you register your firearm, even with a concealed weapons permit. I don't plan i letting anyone know whether or not i still have firearms, because it's really none of their business. If a weapon is stolen i would report it, with serial numbers. That way if it's used in a crime they can keep track of it. Unfortunately if they requrie registration i won't be able to do that...

what I was saying was that the implication seemed to be that absent a renewal of the assault weapons ban that full auto ak's and m4's are lining the shelves of gun shops and gun show tables around the country and that just isn't the case.

I must be missing the news footage of the nightly shootouts in the streets of America where cops are routinely outgunned by roving gangs of automatic weapon-wielding concealed handgun license holders...

please... anyone even modestly familiar with the issue related to the second amendment knows that all these "gun bans" are designed to do is erode the rights of law abiding citizens, see Chicago, New York and DC. cops and criminals are the only ones with a weapon and the rest are left defenseless against both.

there are already laws against owning mines and grenades and claymores and all that stuff. various tax stamp acts have made owning anything f/a almomst impossible for the law abiding joe.

so you call an ar-15 an assault rifle? you think I shouldn't own one? why not? they're fun to shoot, easy to work on, ammo's widely available (until recently), they're accurate and it'll come in handy in case of a zombie apocalypse.

if you're after street gangs' guns, go after the street gangs and leave the citizen alone for once..

you can't.. and Dan shouldn't have mislead you to think that the average joe can get his hands on a full auto ak47.. it would run you many thousands of dollars if you could even find one. that's before the federal tax stamps and the atf registrations and blah blah blah.

you can get a semi automatic look alike but it's nothing like the real thing, afaik.. but a nifty little rifle in it's own right. not all that accurate from what I've see but worth having.
