I am not sure I follow the whole critical link of cultures worldwide thing. I am having difficulty explaining it though. I don't exactly know how to to be perfectly honest. I just know that there are certain characteristics that aren't taken in by that type of class based on just how they treat their employees, their live in maids, etc. However, it's that treatment that got them to where they're and made plenty of other people in this world also succeed. My family didn't start out as the most prominant american dreamer, but certainly became one during the depression. While CEO's were flying out windows, my family was turning their business into an empire. It's hard to put into words what class is but know this, no girl I've ever dated would've survived a dinner with my relatives without me helping her. It's really wierd to be surrounded by people who you may not like based on their behavior but must respect at the sametime? Like in most families I've seen, I've heard screaming and crazyness and vulgar language none of that exists where I come from. If you do any of that or disgrace yourself and the family name, you're just banished from being in the presence of them. In other words, you become the commoner once again. A significant other can also cause this as is the case with some families but in ours it's quite different. Like I said, it's just something that is really hard to put into words because it's just normal to me. I have had the experience of living in more than one social class, and have seen no correlation between the amount of rooms in a house and how those within it's walls conduct themselves. Yes, your depiction of class is indeed a perceptive of where you sit, and means something different to each and every social, economic and academic class, but most think of your version of class, simply as a higher etiquette standard adopted by the wealthy elite because they have time to dress for dinner etc. Those of us who find ourselves lacking a nanny and kitchen staff find it difficult to do so...but we do not see ourselves as being without class because of it, we simply perceive class as something that relates to our own lives. This is as it should be since most definitions of the word class all relate the same thing, and that is simply a division by grade or quality. Class in it's most general meaning is the best of a kind. That being said, the kind of class that refers to the way we treat one another is universal and spans all other classes. No? I think we can agree on this at the very least. |

I've never heard of someone having class when they wear ripped jeans. I've never heard of someone wearing jeans and having class. Behavior is a small fraction I think even though the dictionary says and behavior. I've known many people in my life, who lived monogrammed lives but that don't exude the weakest link of anything close to class. I have also known people that somehow, while living in torn jeans, display outstanding life etiquette on a daily basis as natural as instinct itself. Being born into a "class", does not guarantee a person will inherit CLASS. It's like dressing for dinner...it doesn't make you nice, it simply makes you look nice. Nice comes from within, as does Class. It's got nothing to do with friends, it has everything to do with family. My friends don't come from the upper echelon, my family does. Sitting down to dinner with the governor... I don't see how a governor compares to to a billionaire. I mean they're elected officials and do impose laws on citizens and are in the spotlight and possibly national spotlight but I'm not so positive that every governor has class. I don't think of them as upper echelon. They have power to some degree but not enough and certainly not as much as someone who works outside of the us gov't. They might live in a nice house but it's by no means king like. You'll have to forgive me for disagreeing with you, my perception is a bit skewed. I am only a Levi clad hillbilly myself, and don't understand a thing about the class you speak of. |

I was the poor kid in a pretty wealthy school. Kids in Izod shirts, monogrammed sweaters and Adidas shoes took one look at me in my homemade clothes and hand-me-down discount shoes and nicknamed me Cinderella within minutes. Sure those kids were cruel, but I got more out of my education there without all the distraction of having all those friends.

What is the ideal relation between the individual and the state? Ideally, I believe the perfect relationship is that of mutual support. The individual supporting the community, so that the community can support the whole. Should the individual serve the state or the state serve the individual? The state should serve as a means of mediation between those individuals within it, and the individuals serve to form the way in which the state can best do so. What is the best form of government and what is the worst? I think Communism is the worst form, as it takes away a persons God given right to determine and work toward their own destiny. I think a democracy is the best form of government, as an individuals right to determine their own path is preserved, so long as they do so in a reasonable fashion...as dictated by the laws that WE dictate together. When is a man justified in disobeying the dictates of the state? I don't see that one single man or even a small group is "justified" in any disobedient action against his state. It is his/their duty to choose those who best represent them. If they have failed to elect such officials in their community and they feel they have enough support behind their cause to justify change, then it's their duty to evoke that change through proper channels, or influence the majority to elect such people into offices that can influence such change come the next election. To what extent should the majority rule and thereby act against the freedom of the minorities? I believe it is the majorities job to protect the minority and see to their interests as best they can. When is a man justified in rebelling against the established order and creating a new state? When the majority stands behind him in his views...but by then he will have no need to create a new state, as he has won over the existing one. What are the relative merits of the different economic systems (capitalism, communism, etc.). Communism: everyone but the military starves and no one is free. Socialism: ditto Capitalism: no one starves and everyone has the freedom to imagine they are free. Fascism: few starve and everyone is free to work. Democratic Republic: no one starves and we are free to elect who regulates our freedoms. If you wanted Democracy and Republic broken down separately, I'm not sure how to do that, since the only difference I can clearly see between the two is 4-8 years. Does God have anything to do with this? Sure...free will to ruin...I mean RUN our lives as we see fit. No, seriously though. Sure God has everything to do with it...he started the whole thing by outlining the need for laws, means of enforcement, as well as judges. Check the bible...it's all in there. |
