A new dark ages?

There is too much talk of reverting to the animal and the disruption of society, etc. We should be concentrating on building a decent future and getting rid of the avalanche of outmoded social mores, such as greed and acquisition, class, bad education, and the usual physical madnesses of aggressive nationalism, etc. Why don't you go back to China and farm some rice. |

Infinity, as a number, is not an accepted concept in mathematics. Something that is infinitely large cannot be made larger by adding to it, it's a contradiction in terms. In math, you have two sides to every equation. Infinity * 2 = Infinity. Now remove Infinity from the equation by dividing each side by Infinity and you get "2 = 1", which isn't true. Infinity is a concept, not a number. You're not "removing infinity from the equation", you're dividing by infinity, which... what's your grounding in basic math? I need to know how to pitch this. Where is there any kind of infinity in the physical universe? First of all, I feel duty-bound to point out that there is a difference (and sometimes a massive one) between the way the universe is, and what makes sense. All the other galaxies seem to be moving away from us at close to the speed of light, as though we were the center of some massive space-wheel. However, relativity indicates that it would look like this *no matter where we were* in the universe. And also, relativity dictates that none of these views are incorrect. They are both right. This might be hard to take. Think about some guy on a train moving out of a station. He sees all the people on the platform moving backwards, essentially the entire planet, moving backwards relative to his own position, at whatever speed the train is going. Meanwhile, the people on the platform just see the train moving out. The kick is that Einstein worked out that it's not just a word trick - to that guy on the train, the rest of the planet ACTUALLY is moving backwards at that speed... and the people on the platform are seeing something else entirely. And they're both 100% correct. It doesn't make sense, but it's the way things are in reality. It's the same with this infinity thing. It might not make much sense, but it seems to be the way things are. |

The universe is expanding. If it can get bigger, it can't be infinitely large. Watch this: Infinity + 1 = infinity. That second infinity isn't any less or more than that first infinity, but it just got bigger. By one. You see how that works? It's a bit weird, I know, but it seems to be how the universe actually is. By the way, if you think THAT'S weird, don't ever look into quantum mechanics. It will bend your bones. |

What will happen if.....

Your question is badly worded. Are you asking what would happen if the centre of the earth were hollow? Or are you asking what would happen if someone drilled a tunnel all the way through the middle?
In the first instance, it would dramatically affect the electro-magnetic field around the planet which we need to divert the otherwise harmful solar winds. It probably wouldn't affect the motion - the centripedal force could compensate for the lack of mass, providing a similar amount of gravity. I haven't run the numbers so I'm just guessing. In the second instance, you would create two volcanoes, and ultimately new mountains or islands. Well done. |

Assumed Ethical Superiority
|
|
Well, if you go to the bother of putting together an opinion on some issue, then the chances are that you think that opinion is better than the alternatives. Surely that's just natural?
I don't think it makes me a better PERSON to have my opinions, but I surely do think that my opinions are better than the alternatives. For instance, I happen not to believe in any sort of a god. This means I'm an atheist. I don't think it means I'm BETTER than you just because you're a Christian. But I certainly do think that my opinion is better than yours. You could regard that as "ethical superiority" if you like, but I would be deeply suspicious of someone who held a bunch of opinions which even he himself admitted had as much value to him as every other opinion. On everything. |

What the hell are you talking about? You don't have to do anything - you're a girl. Just keep that profile pic and you'll have bunches of guys messaging you before long.
After that, it just becomes an exercise in weeding out the married guys, or the black guys who are only interested in showing you their penises. |

But it does make for an interesting study, no? On how religious mania is Viagra for those intellectual 'boners'? I don't think anything about this is "interesting". He's not challenging any of my assumptions, or offering anything I haven't heard from a bunch of people who are stupider than him, but still managed to make it sound more interesting. But often, one has to keep their rapier-like wits sharpened to deal with the intrusions, and situations like the one we have here make for good practice. Not this time. I'm not sharpening my rapier for houseflies. we still have the option of calling the mods and having him expelled. They usually work pretty effectively around here if you make your case based on evidence the rules are being broken. There is no "case" here at all. He clearly broke the rules. It only remains to be seen if he refuses to "get" that he's not welcome here. That's not coming from any of us, by the way - that's coming from the forum rules. |

I'm always deeply suspicious of people to whom social skills come naturally. These are the car salesman and game show hosts of our world. If they all disappeared tomorrow, I wouldn't be too sad.

Hereafter
This is a very good movie, but there's no way to describe it that won't make it sound really boring, so I'm not going to. I'll just recommend that you go see it. |

I love community. There was a recent episode featuring a trampoline that I laughed so hard my stomach hurt. YES! Where they weren't supposed to tell anyone and they told Chevy Chase and then it all went to hell. That show rules. It makes me want to go to Community College. j/k I went to a real university. |

awww.... I think its fun when trolls come in here and attack atheism. How is it fun? I wouldn't mind if they had one single intelligent argument. But this guy is a fruit loop. Any sort of recognition - even being totally owned repeatedly, and mocked relentlessly by the good posters here - is maintaining his boner. If we can't find it in ourselves to just ignore him, we should just get his posts removed at admin level. It's not funny. It's not cool. It's just stupid and it's making this thread less and less fun to be in. |

You're a bigger man than I am but of course I'm not a man. lol But really. Congradulations. I have not been able to commit. Go for it. What are you writing about? Thanks, but don't congratulate me until it's done! I may yet fail everyone. I don't even know what I'm writing about. At the moment some guy is driving around Louisiana looking for some girl he knew years ago. |

Time to use Einstein again Einstein was a scientist who did lots of wonderful work in the realm of physics and chemistry. If he has something to say about physics or chemistry, I'll be very interested. Otherwise, it's like listening to Hollywood stars talk about politics. |

Thats exactly what I saw one night in Ontario Canada You saw light bouncing off ducks or geese. Well done. Has anyone really been far as decided to use even go want to do look more like? Yoda? You've got to be kidding me. I've been further even more decided to use even go need to do look more as anyone can. Can you really be far even as decided half as much to use go wish for that? My guess is that when one really been far even as decided once to use even go want, it is then that he has really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like. It's just common sense. |

I don't believe in god, and the thought of jesus scares me, because that means zombies are real. and i dont own a shotgun. Firstly, shotguns aren't much use against a zombie horde. They make you soft, and you'll eventually run out of ammo. A hammer never runs out of ammo. Secondly, that was funny. Well done. |
