LET ME CLEAR SOMETHING RIGHT AWAY. I AM NOT ONLY TALKING ABOUT SEX.
What I really dont understand is why a woman is EXPECTED to do dishes, buy groceries, clean the house, and so on. I mean why the 'hard' things? It just interests me.

Depends on where you live. In most western countries that type of thinking is old-fashioned. It's much more common nowadays for both partners to work and to share the chores at home.

My dear, I have been to some western cities and believe some still think that primitive way. But I am not only writing about those cities/countries. I am talking about in general.

My ex wife was convinced, after getting married, the husband must provide for the family, and that the wife can stay at home. I think, it depends, on how you are brought up by your parents, and not where you live.

It's the old template of living which has been rammed down our throats for hundreds of years, probably much longer. Church has had a lot to do with that.
Basically woman is already made inferior in the bible with the story of Adam and Eve. She was not his first wife, that was Lilith. He wanted her to be subservient to him, she refused as they were made from the same material so they were equal.
In the end she left as he kept insisting she'd be submissive etc.

Personally I think this story was invented to subconsciously tell men they are superior, and to tell women that if they don't obey man they get cast out. That's what happened to Lilith as she has been scorned for ages, called evil etc etc.

Not to make this religious but to illustrate how far this nonsense goes back and thus how deeply it is embedded in people's system.

How badly this belief is still active DOES depend on where one lives. Some countries -or areas in countries- are still rather conservative, and again I see this is often related to people still being quite religious.
It's still a patriarchal society -pretty much everywhere- and has been for a few thousand years.

Women, going a few decades back, didn't even get a fair chance to go out and get a job, as there were no jobs for them in the first place. So I was told by older people here in Ireland. And this was ideal for the Catholic Church, who demanded to be fruitful and multiply noway

Why are women treated as some kind of tool????

Because a lot of men are "tools".

Yeah, the idea of men being superior blah blah is nonsense and what makes it more nonsense are the people who believe it

That is not a teaching from the Bible. That is not a teaching coming from any Christian church that I know of, and I have studied Christian churches for 40 years.

Citing non-Christian mythology that has never been a Church teaching is not a good way to approach the subject of this discussion thread.

All grand here

My parents always told me, that a couple should share all family duties, though my ex wife was the complete opposite. One reason, that marriage went down the drain, I suppose.

That brings us to a more basic question: Why are women treated as commodities? In our daily life examples galore in movies, advertisements and the like!

Back in the 50's, 60's and 70's most men were the sole bread winner in households and most wives did the majority of chores such as cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc. Now most households have to rely on more than one income to make ends meet, so chores are more divided. Things are way different.

Every household is different. Many women and men raise their children alone now, or with shared custody. Being a young widow, with a baby, I did everything. I bought a toolbox, because I did not want any man to feel 'entitled' for helping me.
What I could not do on my own, I paid peple to do.

Perhaps it goes back to the early days of civilization where the men were the hunter-gatherers and the women stayed at homecamp and took care of the children and comfort items.

When farming was instituted, many women tended the farm while the men still hunted for meat. Slowly men began farming and tending the camp.

Over time, the roles merged a lil every generation.

Fast forward to present day.
Old attitudes have given way to new individualism.
Women tend to be more independent as persons, having equal rights in the free world.
Over-all, women have healthier self-esteem than a few generations ago.
TV, movies and even real-life women demonstrate abilities which meet or exceed their male counterparts.

I think it has a lot to do with respect. Not only self-respect but the respect some men give their women. Some men have no issue with treating a woman as a person. Others still treat women as things or slaves.

Personally, I don't need a care-taker. I'm quite capable of taking care of my own needs. I do the dishes when I choose to. My gf, will see the dishes and just do them. I always tell her she doesn't need to do my chores but she says she doesn't mind. To prevent this, I try to do my chose before she comes over so our time together is spent together.

On the opposite end of the scale, when I was married...I worked and my X kept the house. This is because she didn't work, stayed home with the family. I worked long, strange hours and always felt tired. The only time I could really help out with the house is over weekends and most of that time was spend going out and doing things as a family. My X once told me she couldn't sleep if the house was not clean. She was compulsive about it. Frankly, what she called a dirty house was what I called lived in.

But...things change in life. To me, the man/woman roles which used to be so important to me are now less important. I guess it comes from living alone for a long time.
I tend to cherish together time more than chore duty.
It seems to be working pretty good because my gf and I have a strong relationship. A relationship based on equality not master and slave.

Hi Mikaxel waving .. as Tom has pointed out .. gender roles and social evolution throughout history have had a major influence over behaviour . What social patterns and roles we choose to hold onto is often a result of what we value . Personal beliefs and values do not always evolve with the times . Some couples are content and feel secure with traditional roles .. it only becomes harmful and destructive when there is an imbalance in power within the relationship or a change in values .
