Perhaps there is some truth to what the OP suggested. I have often heard women say they get along better with men and would rather have men as friends than women. I have also found a number of women who regularly compare themselves to other women; one only has to look at some of the celebrity antics to get a sense of that.

That does not stop me from liking women, though most women I meet are more team players than the fellow men I do business with. Can be pretty gnarly.
