Topic: How do you keep current? | |
---|---|
It takes some effort to keep up with trends, etc, doesn't it? How do you keep current? This could be for work or for keeping up with movies, music, tv, etc.
What works for you? |

Keeping current:
A: in a cardboard box next to the sultanas. B: in many assorted batteries. But seriously, not so much from 'news providers' who push agendas and chase the money. Looking up issues on the internet and following up links can get you good info from people who know, as well as lots of rubbish which needs to be ignored. I use a meta search engine, which is not restricted to only using google. |

I don't.

I watch/listen to the news from the BBC, they are licence fee funded therefore unbiased in their reporting by regulations. I tend to use emails in keeping contact with family and friends, but use telephone calls and whatsapp video sometimes with family living in Australia. The Film review on TV each week is good for keeping up to date on movies here in the UK. |

^^^ That is the pithiest comment I have ever seen from you! The topic is keeping up with trends. I don't keep up with trends. I don't care for many society trends. I think society has lost its collective mind. Most trends make absolutely no sense. I used to stay on top of it all. I stopped and now I exist in personal contentment. I buy, say, think and act according to my own will, not society's. I really don't care if I fit in anymore, that is way too much stress and drama. |

I don't. I'm with Tom... |

I don't. Ironically enough, since all trends are just the collective aggregate of each individual and what they do, you are yourself (as we all actually are) directly SHAPING what trends there are. Not FOLLOWING trends, makes you a part of the cutting or leading edge of trends going forward. Cool, huh? |

Not FOLLOWING trends, makes you a part of the cutting or leading edge of trends going forward. Cool, huh? Nice one, and yes! But then... if that means I've had a say in the current fashion style... I'm going to get really upset! It's the worst thing they've ever come up with. Some 3 years back (this fashion style seems to go on forever, lol) I went to a pub and noticed most younger women wearing horrible looking knitted sweaters in dull and weird colours. Not the kind of thing I'd ever wear when going out, and I did grow up in the era of knitted sweaters myself. A few days later I went shopping, and was shocked -and horrified- to see these god awful colours and sweaters in every shop Seriously, there should be a law against it! Last year I found a picture of the "mantyhose" and the other day someone posted a picture on FB of two men wearing tight long skirts?? Men showing some leg when wearing shorts, cool! As for the rest, I draw the line at kilts with a Scotsman in it Tom, if this is your doing by not following trends, please change that attitude, even if only for 1 year! |

No effort..no interest. I check FB a couple times a year. But my nieces don't let me stray far from what is 'current' from underwear to exercise, the giant darlings :-) But I get behind on movies, waiting for DVD's to come out. Nice to see you JulietLe, you have interesting topics :-) |

Trends are more for youth and people whom think it makes them. It's the marketing machine keeping people employed.

Not really, not anymore. With the inventory systems used by a lot of stores, online shopping and delivery, everyone in constant contact with what everyone else is doing, what is on the shelves and what is supported tends to be pretty "trendy." Can't really "help" but keep up with most "trends." It takes more time, money, and effort to maintain what isn't the "trend" anymore. But it kinda depends on what part of the "trend/technology" life cycle you're referring to. Last night I was waiting to buy stuff at a store and a lady's chipped debit card wouldn't work. So she tried to write a check. But that didn't work. Next guy in line had some kind of watch they waved in front of the system, but still had to go through the same steps as if he'd swiped the card. I know I'm neither an innovator nor early adopter anymore. I'd say at my age I'm at best an early majority. How do you keep current?
By being a normal consumer. When I was younger and more a part of the innovator/early adopter group it was mostly through friends and competition. What works for you?
Seeking out immediate gratification with a willingness to pay for it, sticking with what works until it stops working or costs less to change. |

I'm not against or for trends.
I'm just no longer interested. At one time in my life (a large portion of it) I had to have some kind of TV service. I had to listen to my 'favorite' radio station. I had to keep up with the current movie releases and talk about them with people. I was constantly bombarded with advertisements telling me this was best for me, that I should be doing this or that and 'here' is the music and movies you need to like. I was told who I need to be, how I was supposed to act and how to interact with others on a constant but ever-changing basis. Use this product now because it is better. Go here now because it is more fun. Listen to us because it will make you happy. You're happy, right? Oh, you're not? Here, this will make you happy again. I assure you....blah, blah, blah. When I removed forced media from my life, it got much simpler to exist. I started wearing what makes me comfortable. I started buying things I want based on my own decisions if I feel I need it. I stopped concerning myself with what others think my life needs to be and started embracing what I want for my life. The confusion, malcontent feelings, indecisiveness, anger, stress and drama of life faded away (rather quickly). I no longer feel like I am trying to chop down a steel pole with a feather. Another thing it did was open my eyes to others deluded expectations. It allowed me to see in others what I was at one time. I spent some time people-watching. What I discovered was that most others are very discontent in their lives. They are full of stress and drama trying to hang onto what they are convinced is what they 'should' be in order to be happy and successful in life. What I see is that life doesn't work that way. What's worse is that most people don't have a clue what went wrong but they continue to fall for the manipulation hook, line and sinker. I'm not looking for a trendy woman. I am looking for a woman that is in control of her own life. Someone already content, not full of stress and drama fabricated to make her be something she is not. |
