Topic: Giving out your cell number. | |
---|---|
I'm curious to how people think about giving out their cell phone number on a first contact message. If someone sent you a first contact message. At least a paragraph about themselves. And then offered their cell phone number for you to text them, Would you do it? I'm expecting the women to say no. I don't know about the men.

I'd call them, but probably wouldn't text. And really, it depends on what their profile said too. I mean if it said "hi! I'll write more later!" on their profile and then their first contact message was "Hello, I am looking for marriage. I like long walks on the beach..."(etc., insert cliches here) "Here's my number with international prefix..." Then no, I wouldn't call them. If they had a profile full of information that shows an individual personality, and a first contact email that expands on that and/or looks like they have something to say, then I'd call them. Mostly because for online dating I have 1.throwaway email account that has absolutely no connection to any personal information including IP address. 2. A prepaid "burner" cell phone paid for with cash. So calling them poses no real risk to me. IME, people that actually have something to say in their profile, send worthwhile first messages, and actually want to date don't want to text. They want to call, and/or date, or stick to email for a while before calling and/or dating. They don't want to go from paragraphs and loads of information to texting. Children, cheaters, and people that are just lonely and want an immediate attention fix try to go to text messaging and see it as any kind of forward step. |

It really depends on a lot of factors.
Who and where they are calling from has a lot to do with it. Name and number don't check out I am not dialing and giving them a second thought. Someone I have known from on line for awhile, seen their behavior I might be inclined to give a number that is not going to trail back to my home. That I am pretty private about. When I am not more or less seriously dating someone I would be more inclined to at least Skype and see if I am interested. Dating is one of those things that seems to be feast or famine. Guys are like women and they tend to run in seasons. If you are going to try to compete around a holiday you are more than likely going to have fewer responses or maybe get lost in the shuffle. It is true women get hundreds of emails. It is not hard for one to fall through the cracks. Some of it depends how many times I have been hassled by the Frog Prince Association or the scammers. Stupid gets old fast and if I have met my quota then I am a little less congenial. Just because someone gives me a number, which does help your chances a little further in the process, doesn't mean I am going to call on the first email. Desperate is never attractive. The gentleman who makes me work less has fewer hoops to deal with. I sure don't need some guy who wants a endless chat buddy or text girlfriend but lighten up and joke or have less of telling the life story and I won't think of you as a case I have to deal with but a fun date or a potential personal relationship. Electronic pacifiers don't hold my attention long so if you are someone who demands a lot of chronic attention you will fall on your own sword. I have had people I was interested in get peeved because I don't prioritize them like I do my family and real life friends. If there is a crisis going on at home I don't always broadcast it to the online community. Or if I take off and do something fun I am not going to announce I am gone. I have great neighbors but I do think about being smart. |

Gender - Female Vote - No Wouldn't we have a fun a fun date...it would be like two "mole" operatives having a staring contest at a government sponsored conspiracy theorist convention: Female Male You look nice, now don't you? I can neither confirm nor deny any level of appearance, nor would I be disposed to discuss any said level of appearance, if it did in fact exist. Lovely weather we're having, isn't it? I can neither confirm nor deny any judgement of the weather , nor would I be disposed to discuss any said judgement, if it did in fact exist. Do you like Italian food? I can neither confirm nor deny any affinity for Italian food, nor would I be disposed to discuss any said affinity, if it did in fact exist. Would you care to come up for a nightcap? I can neither confirm nor deny any desire for a nightcap, nor would I be disposed to discuss any said desire, if it did in fact exist. Well, good night, then? Goodnight. Alright - first base! |

Well, I'm not a fan of texting anywaybut a lot of people do it these days. Many women would rather do it than message on here. They sometimes also give you their facebook or ask you if you want to use some other thing for chatting. I generally tell them that I'll chat with them on the phone or meet them but that it's more convenient for me to message on here, rather than elsewhere and if they're genuinely interested they will accept that.

It's a mind set, when it rings.. I am in that mindset... not that other one ;) |

Generally not at all, or not until I have known someone from here for a longtime. Even then it's no guarantee. That's my answer to the chat question on another thread too

Ah, how I dream of the good old days when a girl just smiled sweetly and gave you the number of the laundromat or pizza joint when you asked for her digits!

I'd be glad if she at least gave me a pizza place's phone number....then I can at least order a pizza, instead of hearing (di na na, we're sorry that number that you dialed, is no longer in service.)
Anyways, to answer the OP....It usually takes me a lil bit of messaging 1st, to get a rapport, before exchanging phone numbers. I'll even check the number she gives me, to make sure it's not just some VOIP. I admit, I have some paranoia.... |

Never had that happen...
But im thinking...not likely on first contact message...that would be just freaky... |
