Topic: Workers win raises, lose jobs. | |

Here is an excerpt from a New York Times story titled "After Winning a Raise, 175 Casino Workers in Queens Lose Their Jobs".
On Monday, about 175 employees of the buffet restaurant in the slot-machine and electronic gambling casino in Ozone Park learned that the restaurant had been closed and that their jobs no longer existed. The casino had plaudits when, in late October, a labor arbitrator issued a ruling that doubled the average pay of workers.

Doubling of wages? The illusion of entry level workers is a variation of entitlement- whereby everyone believes he/she is entitled to more wages regardless of consequences or value of work being done.

Food Stamps, section 8, Medicaid, energy discounts is way above minimum wage.
Then, there are those who work under the table and/or deal drugs, hook, etc. |

Food Stamps, section 8, Medicaid, energy discounts is way above minimum wage. Then, there are those who work under the table and/or deal drugs, hook, etc. all these things are available for those who are working minimum wage, as well, so the analogy just doesn't really work,,,, they are 'income' based, not 'work' based,,, |

Be careful about what you wish for ... the same article seems to imply the buffet was losing money and that is why it closed other eating establishments have remained open under the same raise so, if you work for a company that's losing money, start looking elsewhere instead of expecting a raise, and look faster if they give raises ,,,,,, |

I imagine, when all the ado was going on about raises the employees were aware of the restaurants predicament.
Greed screwed em all. Now,they get to own their outcome. Speaking of owning, I came across this bit of wisdom. 'Grown has the word OWN in it. When ur GROWN. U pay ur OWN bills. Have ur OWN crib, OWN car, u make ur OWN money. U take care of ur kids on ur OWN & U mind ur OWN business. When u've established these things consider urself GROWN... OWN it and GROW up!! |

I agree, they also realize that laziness is not determined by economic situation ,,,,, lazy people exist on all socio economic levels |

People who request large increases in minimum wage fail to realize the money must initially, and continually come from somewhere. Cause, and effect.

It's the American way. yep employers can definitely dictate the wage that works for maximum profit employees can do the same,,,,, except that employees have employeea come to them at a rate of about 100 applicants per opening..... making an average of about 99 other people seeking that other job you may seek when your pay isn't adequate,,,, so yeah, just 'get a job',, or 'get a different job',,,,and hope your 1 percent chance pays off this time,,,lol employees be grateful , WHATEVER They offer, employers,, offer what works best for you..... |
