Topic: Atheist? | |
---|---|
Not trying to spark arguments? We believe what we believe.
My question to you guys, when times are tough....what do you hold onto in your darkest hours? I went through an agnostic phase in high school...but I went through a period where I felt alone and I talked to God... A higher power... My most high... Whatever others call it? I went through the agnostic phase because there were and ARE so many hypocrites having faith completely turned me off! So, I ask with honest intentions of curiosity... What do you believe in ? What gets you through the dark times? |

"In the beginning was the Logos...", Logos technically means Word. But that is not its definition in philosophy and that is what makes the statement accurate. Read Marcus Aurelius (sp?). In Northern European Pagan philosophy it is called the Wyrrd, etc.

I'm an atheist and I believe in myself. i think every event in my life is based on the choices I make. So in my darkest hour, I'd curse myself why I'm here in first place and finally accept my fate. God isn't real for me. even if he's real why would he let people suffer so much. why won't he stop the wars of mankind? religion is created by hypocrites who aim to control people with blind faith(Islam for example).

In Northern European Pagan philosophy it is called the Wyrrd, etc. Never thought of that (Logos = word). So what about the great planetary Logos, I wonder Guess I got to get some books of the shelf again ... |

I am an aethist myself. Through the dark times; I try to deal with it best as I can. I don't believe praying is going to change anything so I try to look on the bright side of things. For instance; everyone thinks its sad that I am alone for Christmas but I look at what I do have rather than what I don't have. I have a home, a warm bed, a job, and food in my stomach. There are many out there that are very poor and homeless. They are the ones truly suffering while I am blessed with what I have.

Do atheists celebrate CHRISTmas?
If so, why? |

I continue, knowing that everything works out in the end. If it hasn't worked out, it's not the end.

Do atheists celebrate CHRISTmas? If so, why? I have no idea as I neither believe in or celebrate Christmas as I simply can't afford it money wise and don't like gaining weight from over eating. For some atheists; they are celebrating the winter solstice and not the birth of Christ as it was believed to be in September or summer. So, in essence an atheist is not celebrating a religious holiday. |

. . . when times are tough....what do you hold onto in your darkest hours?
What do you believe in ? What gets you through the dark times? As a Non-Theist I have never encountered a situation that even suggested the need to believe in "a higher power" or a "god." When life presents challenges I rely on myself in dealing with circumstances, whatever they may be (and have for over seventy years). I see no reason to "hold onto" a supernatural being that cannot be shown to be anything more than the product of human imagination and wishful thinking. However, I realize that many people take comfort in "turning to god" in times of adversity or difficulty. Perhaps we have differences in need for "comfort" or "support?" "Believe in" does not apply. I live in the real world that does not require "belief." I do not make up or accept fanciful stories or theories to "explain" what is not known. For example, I do not hesitate to say "I don't know how the universe originated or how life began -- and neither does anyone else -- and such knowledge is not required to live successfully in the real world." I acknowledge the December ("Winter") Solstice and purchase a new calendar. Festivities, "Christmas shopping", and overeating are of no interest to me. Life is good all year -- with no emphasis on season. |

I guess I'm an atheist, but believing in none of that supernatural stuff I also accept that I have control over nothing. So I rely on rational thought to get me through the tough times. Like identifying the cause of the problem and thinking of ways I can improve my situation. Everything ends eventually, whats the difference if its now or later?

======================================================================= I accept i never believe. Perseverance is what gets me through the "dark times". |

In my darkest hours I keep to the faith I have in Jesus Christ to pull me through.
