ugly classism is what you get when people ASSUME the character or worthiness of another INDIVIDUAL based upon their financial status in life

... or you assume that a person's better financial status is due to the person having a privilege that others don't have.

well, in a big world, you can bet someone in a better financial status DID Have a privilege other didn't

even something as small as the kind of education or environment that reinforce their esteem and beief in themselves

or as big as being in a circle of family or community who have 'word of mouth' information to pass down or on to each other

privileges come in many forms

from one who has been on it,, welfare is no more incentive not to work than being born to a wealthy family

people learn to earn their keep or they don't

I wont take the nave stance that laxy people aren't eer on welfare, but I doubt it is the norm to prefer scrounging for basics under the costant watch and dehumanization of others to having some control over your own life,,,,

Depends on what you mean by an incentive. Why would a person go to work at a job they many not like, if they can sit at home and get paid anyway?

Are they rewarded for earning a little extra money? No, they are basically penalized for showing the incentive to work when their check is reduced.

slaves were 'paid' in food and shelter

all 'payment' isn't worth the price

and the dehumanization, belittlement, and subjugation that is required of those who 'sit at home and get paid' with welfare,, is about as worth it as the food and shelter was to slaves,,,

And you were a slave when?....I think you made that statement up Harmony.....spock

why is it necessary for me to have been a slave? really?

lol

is it necessary for others to be on welfare to come to their conclusions about the 'incentive' of those who are?

or is there a debate about whether a slave would have felt being second class was worthwhile because they at least had room and food?

,, the absolutist response that continue in these threads is beyond ridiculous,, seriously

so lets quantify,, let me concede,, indeed as INDIVIDUALS Go, IM sure there are those who are or were

1. on welfare because they are lazy
2. happy to be enslaved because their work was compensated by food and shelter
3. voting for elected officials because of race
4. black and harmfully/hatefully racist

,,,did I leave out any of the disputed 'possibilities' that seem to be obstructing any opportunity to discuss the situations of those who are

1. on welfare and NO LAZY or without incentive
2. not happy to be enslaved and subjugated second class during slavery or jim crow IN SPITE of their 'compensation'
3. voting for candidates of their own race for reasons OTHER THAN RAC
4. black and not harmfully/hatefully racist

Yep! When I was in high school, I was at a great disadvantage when it came to socializing with the prettiest girls.

Why? Because I was white, and the prettiest girls were black.

Due to racial differences, the black boys could get the attention of those girls, but I couldn't.

No need to quantify, just stick to the facts....Welfare is in the present ....Happening now.....Right out in the open where people can witness it....Evaluate it as it is happening...Not like slavery which ended in 1865!...Get over it, you have no idea what the value of food and shelter was to slaves because you were not there and you were never a slave...Simple....

The "slavery" in this country that you keep bringing up has been abolished, or made illegal. (White people abolished it.) So stop living in the past.

Illegal Slavery is still practiced all over the world and it is not specifically a racial thing, but you apparently harbor racial anger for the slavery history in this country.

People who can't work, for what ever reason, should get welfare. How they "feel" about it is up to them. They should not worry about what the "stereo type" is. There are stereo types for everything.

The welfare system is not perfect, nobody said it was. People's greedy attitudes about paying taxes and their neighbor on welfare having a better car than they do can't be controlled.

My daddy was dirt poor! So were a lot of white folks. He grew up, served in the war, came home and got a job at the mill and worked hard all of his life. He was never rich, and never on welfare.

there is more than enough free money available to poor people to cover the cost of a basic secondary education.

any poor person with a true desire to better their lives can get the money to go to a community college and get an associates degree.

stop making excuses because it is beyond ridiculous, seriously.

I will stick to 'facts'
as soon as everyone else here does

until then my common sense, observations, opinions will be expressed here as freely as anyone elses

an by the way,, after slavery was JIM CROW, which ended only in my ow mothers lifetime, or should I not acknowledge her first hand acting of her experiences either,, because they weren't my own

like the 'testimonies' others paste here from others are not their own experiences either

but its cool, everyone but harmony who is has experience being both black and on assistance, can continue on with their opinions about the character or values of either group without much chance at the type of dismissive responses that continue to occur when I share mine,,

as if

I will continue with my opinions,,,,by the same 'standards' anyone else here is held to

Getting back to the actual topic:

"We have to start overcoming these stereotypes about the poor; we have to start recognizing the immense barriers that the poor face in their daily lives. Lack of health insurance, lack of access to good schools, poor access to legal services – these are just a few of the systemic challenges that keep poor people, poor. Let's try to level the playing field before saying: the poor should just work harder and pull themselves out of poverty. Guess what: it's just not that easy.

The guy who wrote this believe "its not easy to pull yourself out of poverty."

By saying this, he is perpetrating a belief which according to the laws of the universe just give that belief more fire.

How does he propose to "level the playing field?"

I have a suggestion on how to eliminate poverty overnight.

Let congress print the money instead of borrowing it from private central banks who just print it out of thin air and then charge interest on it.

Let congress print the money and distribute it to everyone. Give everyone money. They in turn will spend on food and housing and living expenses and other things they want, and that will put people to work to supply the demand for products.

Problem solved.

typical classist/clueless response

anyway, those on welfare are no more or less 'desiring' of success than anyone else

they very often don't have the knowledge, esteem, or resources to pursue their desires in any way that has a chance of success

As far as education goes..... there is the Internet. You can even get degrees... real ones. You can learn lots of stuff.

How to run your own business, how to make a website, how to cultivate marijuana and make a fortune in Colorado. LOL

If no one will hire you, you may be forced into an occupation of your own design.

Private Investigator, contractor, deliver papers, drive a cab, mow lawns, consulting, artist, begging on the street... (yep they make big bucks) Caring for the elderly, nurses aid, (free training) Phone sex, psychic phone readings, Tarot readings.

Hopefully your occupation is legal.

yes, finally, a true 'fact'

there certainly are

but even when there WERENT,, the story was the same

in 1970, when there were 60 percent married black households,, the income disparity was still there , pretty much in the same proportion

http://www2.census.gov/prod2/popscan/p60-078.pdf

median household incomes that year?

white: 10,236
black: 6,516

and , even accounting for single status, blacks and Hispanics still trail behind the similarly single householded whites

not unless we ignore the reality of things called abortion and separation,,,,

women can choose to keep a baby after they have become pregnant, if the man bails,, and become a single parent

other women can have men bail and decide, consequently , not to keep the baby

then there is also interracial sex,, which makes it hard to assume what race the deadbeat dad was just from the race of the mother

Not if people are keeping good birth records.

Yes women can chose to keep their babies and men can choose be dead beat dads and bail.
