Last Updated 8:02 a.m. ET (CBS/AP) After causing heavy damage and at least 40 deaths in the Caribbean, Hurricane Sandy is headed toward making landfall on the East Coast by Tuesday. No one can be certain how powerful it will become, but the signs are ominous. Meteorologist and CBS News hurricane analyst David Bernard of CBS Station WFOR says the storm weakened slightly overnight to a tropical storm, but was upgraded this morning to a hurricane packing 75 mph winds. Sandy is expected to make landfall early Tuesday near the Delaware coast, then hit two winter weather systems as it moves inland, creating a hybrid monster storm that could bring nearly a foot of rain, high winds and up to 2 feet of snow. Experts said the storm could be wider and stronger than Irene, which caused more than $15 billion in damage, and could rival the worst East Coast storm on record. Bernard says the storm's massive wind field means tropical storm-force winds means the danger from the storm when it makes landfall spreads through all of New England and the Mid-Atlantic states - the most densely-populated part of the country. We'll have to see how it goes. It seems like they're playing it up as much as possible, though.

The big threat of this storm is rain, and lots of it. A couple of inches per hour for a couple of days will cause widespread flooding and may hit records. Prepare to see houses floating down rivers. But as storms go, it is just big, not very powerful.

There will be quite a bit of wind as well, which will cause power outages. But as of now, I believe it's a category 1.

How many of us are scared or excited and what are you doing to get ready for what could be the worst storm to hit the east coast on record? the Trouble will start when it merges with a nor'easter!Already dubbed "Frankenstorm"! As Hurricanes go,sat through worse ones!

I have sat through worse hurricanes too. But they're saying its not just the hurricane. The combination of the nasty cold fronts and the hurricane could potentially be the worst storm on record. I am worried about the flooding that 10" of rain will bring. Last time we got less than 4" at one time the river by our house crested at 20' above the norm and thats enough to flood a lot of people out.

I have sat through worse hurricanes too. But they're saying its not just the hurricane. The combination of the nasty cold fronts and the hurricane could potentially be the worst storm on record. I am worried about the flooding that 10" of rain will bring. Last time we got less than 4" at one time the river by our house crested at 20' above the norm and thats enough to flood a lot of people out. Your post is the only place I've heard about it being "the worst storm on record."

I have a lot of friends and family all up and down the east coast, I am concerned for them. My understanding of why this is such a concern is that the computer models are showing something that has not been seen before. Comparing this to a storm in 1938.

Hurrican schmurricane, I live in Arizona! By the time this thing makes landfall it'll be to pooped to party. Enjoy the rain!

The media is just running with it.

This is an example of how (and when) people turn to government for "help."..Not just FEMA but local and state governments too. And govt. agencies and resources etc...Local churches and volunteer agencies play a big role. But all in all people look to govt. officials and agencies for direction and "help."..Anything can happen at any time when it comes to natural disasters. (Hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, raging fires and you name it!)...Anyway I hope that "Sandy" calms down a bit and doesn't do the kind of damage that's been predicted...It's already having an effect on election coverage. And I hope it won't prevent anyone from being able to vote. Hope no one dies. (This is more important than anything!)

And I hope it won't prevent anyone from being able to vote. Hope no one dies. (This is more important than anything!) I live in Ocean City Maryland and its a total disaster area. The ocean and bay have come together in the middle of the town and its just one giant pool now. tens of millions if not more in damage. it has been all they predicted and then some..
