Why is it socially acceptable to tell women not to walk alone at night, but not to dress "appropriately"? The former is more offensive. "Women are not raped because of how they are dressed!" WELL THEN, WOMEN ARE ALSO NOT RAPED BECAUSE THEY ARE WALKING ALONE AT NIGHT! This is degrading. You are saying women are incapable of defending themselves? You are suggesting that they need a MAN by their side??? What's next, should men start accompanying women to dinner and paying for them like in the olden days??? UGH!!!

I have to disagree. The freaks come out at night.......

i don't believe it's how a woman is dressed at all. just the fact it's a woman alone, which presents the opportunity for her to be attacked by some sicko. a man walking alone is just as vunerable to attack. not necessarily rape, but it has happened in the past. just remember, there is safety in numbers regardless of gender. and a can of mace doesn't hurt any either,,, |

They simply are following a trend. A man is more likely to target a woman. Also more likely to target a woman alone at night. Whether or not she can defend herself is not going through the attackers mind. Therefore...why not simply take preventive measures.

Who put the burr under your saddle? Do you know of any case in which a rapist attacked a woman who had someone else with her? Also, telling a woman not to walk alone does not imply that she needs a man with her. A woman could simply have another woman with her. |

And to be honest, it can be easy for a man to overpower a woman. |

UGH!!! seems like it's a preventive nature... if you do things that don't put you in harms way, you stand less of a chance of being attacked... and having a man by your side not going to stop it either, no matter who it is. women can defend themselves, they do it all the time, but there's not much you can do if it's more than one attacker, even if you have a man with you... |

There are many parts of the world where it is not safe for anyone, man or woman, to walk alone at night, and it is sad to say that increasingly both man and woman are being advised not to walk alone at night. Sensible and well intended advice is to be welcomed. Regarding your comments on dining, I take great pleasure in taking a lady to dinner, and the privilege in my paying the bill, if that means I am a "last millennium man" then that is OK by me. |

I got no problem chicks sexually assaulting me.....it is kind of a compliment.

My point is that many people hold the view that "even if you wear a t-shirt that said "I'm asking for it" you still have the right not to be sexually assaulted." That's something one woman said on the news. If statistics showed that most victims of sexual assault were dressed slutty, people would still say that they have a right not to be touched. Why can't they apply that view to the issue as a whole? Why can't we go about their daily business? Why are we being scolded? Trying to take away our independence and FREEDOM is disgusting. It's other women who are saying we shouldn't be walking alone at night!!! And yes a woman could walk with another woman, but what happens when they need to part ways? There have been a string of recent attacks in a certain neighbourhood in my city which prompted me to make this thread. And guess what? They haven't caught the perpetrator! How pathetic.

You certainly CAN walk alone anywhere you want to at anytime. You can even do it in a thong bikini. And, you have the absolute right to do it without being raped or otherwise harassed. The problem isn't convincing US that you shouldnt be raped. The problem is convincing the rapist.

It's also infringing on my personal freedom to have to take my car key with me and lock my car doors when I run into a store. I mean I SHOULD be able to leave the motor running while I'm doing my shopping if I want.

I can see suggesting women not walk around alone at night as a safety precaution. I don't agree with telling women what to wear, though. Rape is about power, control and violence. Women are raped wearing all kinds of different clothes. Blaming the woman for dressing a bit too sexy is not going to stop people from being raped.

And that's exactly what I'm talking about. It is good to be street smart, but frankly if I feel unsafe in a particular area and I have the option to ask someone to walk with me to a certain point, I will. But that should be MY choice. Nobody should be telling me to do that.
