Topic: Can you count change? | |
---|---|
I've come across quite a few employees over 25yrs who has had trouble with this. Rule of thumb for a cashier is to count up mentally. Example: Customer hands you a 5$ Item cost .73 cents... (fish it out of the drawer as you're counting up) Add 7cents to get you to >>>>> 80cents... then add .20cents to get to >>>> a buck then add 4$ to get to>>>>> five bucks Financial advice on Mingle? Priceless! Now see, I would have added .02 to get to .75 and then add a quarter to get to the buck. Thanks alot Ruth.... Now I completely lost count |

I don`t mean to sound like this, but some of the people doing a cashiers job nowadays just don`t give a chitt about their job, let alone know how to give change back. Hell a lot of them don`t even say Thank you even after you have made a purchase.
I come from the old school ways of how to count change, and tell a customer Thank you after they have made a purchase. In my years of working, I have worked at 3 different grocery stores as a jack of all trades, a master of none.(cashier job included). I have also worked as a cashier at a parking deck. A good customer relationship brings a customer back to your establishment because you have treated them fairly and with respect. |

A good customer relationship brings a customer back to your establishment because you have treated them fairly and with respect. That's correct. When I worked as a cashier, I actually had customers who preferred to have me for a cashier. |

I think this is a very good thread
I just now came across it- I have been wondering the same thing myself! and I absolutely HATE it when the cashier doesn't even tell you what your change is...they just put it in your hand! If you're lucky, you MIGHT get a THANK YOU! |

She probably had already entered that she received $2.00. ..and then it was too late. Obviously this entire situation is your own danged fault for being so confusing and misdirecting! Giving the poor cashier paper AND metal? What the hax is wrong with you? (I should tell you that I'm being sarcastic - in case they don't teach that in language classes, either.) I am so **** about pennies. I cant bear to have pennies. Its my personal challenge to find ways to pay with them even if Im only trading up for a whole nickel at once. I'm with you on that. I personally believe we don't need anything smaller than quarters. It would make things easier on cashiers the world over! I can not count on my fingers and toes how many times I have ran into this same issue.
So... this is a very personal problem for you, is it? There, there. We can teach you how to count on your fingers and toes! |

The other thing kids aren't learning in elementary school anymore is analog time (how to tell time from a clock face) and that lesson about how to use a ruler (don't know if it was part of a math lesson or not?).

WHY AREN'T SCHOOLS TEACHING OUR CHILDREN HOW TO COUNT CHANGE? I purchased a burger at Burger King for $1.58. The counter girl took my $2,
and I pulled 8 cents from my pocket and gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel and 3 pennies, while looking at the screen on her register. I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters, but she hailed the manager for help. While he tried to explain the transaction to her, she stood there and cried... some schools do, some schools don't our public schools are not exactly 100% uniform in the quality they provide,, |

I have worked retail for almost 10 years. Its a hard job sometimes. I have watched cashiers get so nervous and count the wrong change back because the customer is giving them a hard time. I usually tell them to take deep breaths and relax. Then other times its their first job and they really dont know how to count change. It could go either way.
