Topic: law requiring welfare recipients to take drug test | |

I honestly don't see why people see the need to further humiliate the poor. So....rich people don't do drugs? C'mon', man. It's just another form of humiliation........ The rich don't claim welfare and use their food money for drugs. welfare is taxpayers money, the poor are also taxpayers into the system just as many rich druggies as there are poor druggies, and the money has all exchanged hands dozens if not hundreds of times before they use it,,, They are using money from food stamps and cards meant for FOOD items on drugs. It is more common then people on here realize. We used to investigate this instances at my old job and get authorities involved. We would have atleast 20-30 instances during an 8 hour shift at ONE store. cash assistance is not meant for FOOD, Food benefits are meant for food and disbursed so they may only be used for food. People may misuse their CASH assistance, but thats a necessary evil to allow people SOME way to handle their 'non food' needs,,, |

I feel confident enough to say that I will bet that everyone here has needed some help at one time or another...although most will not admit it here. Makes it easier to condemn others that way...lump them all together and label them. Easier to hate that way Lpdon, i can see you REALLY loving that job ![]() ![]() I sure as hell did, I loved nailing those criminals. |

Cuz' yr rich you can do whatever you want, right? But....if yr poor.....you have to be a saint? Live under a microscope? Get real people........ You're missing the point there. It's not about that the rich can do what they want. That's a WHOLE different issue. The 'rich' are supporting themselves and being productive parts of society. The idea is that taxpayers are effectively supporting drug users who should/could be working and by NOT drug testing, encouraging them to continue their habits. That's absolutely true, but has nothing to do with the idea of drug testing for welfare. The point is about having taxpayers supporting habits. if and when the addicts die..the kids becoming wards of the state is funded by taxpayer money if and when the addict ends up in jail, is also supported by taxpayer money why not put the money to better use and actually um, help?!?! they have to want the help first... you can't force someone to quit drugs if they have no urge to... That's true. And if they sit on their butt all day and get high while the taxpayers pay their way, why would they have the urge to quit? Yes, that might be very general, but how many times is it true? My thoughts on this subject aren't just opinions that I gathered from what I've read or was told about. It's all from what I've witnessed first hand. I didn't exactly grow up in a rich neighborhood with a silver spoon in my mouth or know nothing about drug use. I grew up in a small upper-lower class neighborhood with drugs and public assistance ALL around and in the 80's my family even got food stamps. I started working when I was 14 because if I wanted something, I had to buy it myself. A quarter a week allowance didn't go too far! In the early 90's I put myself through college and graduated from there not only once, but TWICE! I'll admit it. Through the late 80's-mid 90's I did WAY MORE than my share of drugs and until relatively recently, alcohol, so I do know a thing or two about addiction. I started my own business from scratch in '93 and before it grew to the point where I didn't have to, I was working 3 jobs + building my business just to support myself. Sure, I would have qualified for welfare, but I had more self-worth than to take free money instead of doing what I knew I was capable of. I bought my house in the late 90's (in that same town I grew up in and is continuously getting worse) and I have no plans of leaving. Not because I can't, but because it's home. Lots of the people I grew up with are still here. Quite a few of them were and still are users and living on assistance. A very large percentage not because they HAVE to, but because the system LETS them. |

A LOT of people sell whats on their card for a low as ten cents to as high as fifty cents on the dollar. They hang out in front of grocery stores and approach peopple going in offering to buy their groceries on their card in exchange for cash. Which, by the way is a crime and depending can also become a Federal Crime. I get asked at least twice a week when I go shopping, and when im working going in and out of a store I cant count how many times I get asked and I always get the police involved. It is always for drugs, cigarettes or alcohol. |

I hope yr sincere.....but you lost me at the point you claimed I was an employee of the Taxpayer, see? I live alone. I work alone. It is me....myself....and I. I don't need judgement. I have my own problems...... Food stamps eliminates one..... Thank you very much. I spend them on food. I am not a degenerate. I am not a criminal....... I believe I said it in a sense. Not that they are actually employees of the state. ![]() I don't think I did judge you at all! I NEVER said you misused the system. You decided that I was saying you were. I NEVER even said people in general misuse it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I even said there are good and bad everywhere!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If someone takes it personally, that on them. I never personalized it. I was on welfare. My sister is on permanent disability. My brother in law was on unemployment and now the doctors want to put him on disability because he shattered his leg and it won't heal right because he is diabetic and will use a cane and have pains for the rest of his life. I never assumed someone is lazy or whatever just because they need assistance. Yes there are some that are. No not everyone is. Please do not put words into my mouth |

The Lone Star Card is Texas' version of the food stamp/TANF card. I was on WIC back before the debit cards. lone star is way different from wic, wic is a voucher, lone star is like a debit card... certain scanned items will not ring up on the register, it is computerized and it won't happen... |

I know. I was saying I was on WIC (that was the only assistance I have been on) and that was 20 yrs ago, so everything has changed since back then. My brother in law has the Lone Star Card now. |

welfare reform has changed most of what we thought we knew about welfare growing up
this isnt the welfare of our childhood, people are not LIVING off of welfare for generations,, those days are gone but if they want to do drug screens on top of all the other REQUIREMENTS there are to receive temporary assistance,,,I guess people will do what they have to do,,, |

The reason you cannot technically buy anything but food on food cards, at least in Texas is because food isn't taxed. Sodas and fast foods are. I was able to buy tomato plants, pepper plants, blackberry plants, herbs, and other veggie plants from the garden center because those aren't taxed either.
If you have a crooked person or several working the inside, like we did at our Wal-Mart, they can turn off the tax info on the computer and the food card will take the TV or whatever. It was a nice racket when that was caught. |

Please dis-regard all my comments from yesterday. I was in a very bad mood and my judgement was cloudy. Looking back now I can see that I was being irrational. Please forgive me.......

we are a socialistic country, why? well lets see social security,welfare,medicaid,medicare,unemployment..etc.the american people voted for people to take office that passed these bills to create these funds and organizations, yeah some people take advantage of it,but besides that whats the problem?
now it's gonna cost the taxpayers to get these recipients on welfare to take drug test,so then they can get disability(another sign of socialism) cause they are clinically unstable to work cause of their drug abuse. this country doesn't want to become a third world country so it has become socialist, blame it on the first depression and the stock market |
|
|
|
OF the people, BY the people and FOR the people
if its people who wish to chip in to look after themselves AND each other,,,thats a socialism I can live with,, |
