I feel as though people now days in my age group don't really think or care about the future. They party 24/7, don't go to school, don't work, live off their parents, do drugs, have kids, and are simply not responsible.

Maybe I'm hanging around with the wrong crowd, but honestly, I haven't met a different crowd yet.

I'm in no way implying I'm a saint/perfect, but I do care about my future, and know the consequences of my actions, therefore I TRY to make decisions that lead to the best possible outcome. I believe in balancing life. Anyone share this same perspective? Anyone? spock

Sounds like you've just entered the next stage of life a bit quicker than your contemporaries. Most of the will eventually catch up.

I suppose I am "old school", and it's definitely what I like to be. I just wish I could meet more young "old school" peoples tongue2

This makes a lot of sense. I tend to get along more with the 26+ year old crowd.

It just makes me feel older than what I really am.

Just becasue your head is in a different place means nothing. Age is a number. State of mind is different. You want to plan for a future now to retire early and not work later? Better than waiting for later! People always seem to seek the easy way out. There is no easy way out. Some find that out later than others.

Wisdom sometimes comes at a very high price. It seems you have more than your share of wisdom going on!

I will agree with you that they do not act right, but I am sure that every generation says the same thing about the next generation when they are living the carefree life growing up. But now days there might be more to get in trouble with and bigger consequences with their actions if they get caught but since there are many parents now who are trying to be a friend rather than a parent their kids grow up not taking accountability for their actions until they get out of hand...

To some extent, I agree with you.
I see the Gen.X mindset all around me here in College. There's definetly a lack of motivational drive I witness amongst them. But on the other hand...I do see a few who are goal driven. There's definetely been a thinning of the herd since I was a young man.

Maybe Gen. X hasn't had to face the reality that competition is a necessity to survival? Not having had to live under the threat of the Cold-War, as we did in my time, might have put your generation under a false sense of security and they are resting on their laurels.
Keep your chin up though, because you ARE in the minority and you WILL suceed with your mindset.

I think you've just described 99% of all the people I've ever known.

Most of the people I've known seem to be living their lives on automatic pilot, letting other people and/or society as a whole make all their decisions for them. They find it easier not to have to do their own thinking; as a result, they eventually lose that ability altogether.

Every generation feel that way Gummy.

I guarantee, Moses sat there b!tching..."Society is going to Hell...These kids with thier belly dancing and idol worshipping is gonna be our downfall. Back in MY day, we were beaten within an inch of our life with a tree branch...these kids today got it easy...they only get beaten with a rod until they pee on themselves....they have it sooooooo easy!"

I am 20 years old I had a kid young she is 2 now it may have been immature of me to be so reckless but she helped me grow up, I spent 3 years in the Air Force, I take care of her and do what I can.
I care about mine and her future, and I am doing everything I can nowadays to have a secure future not only for myself but for her as well.
I think there are a lot of young people that are smart and mature you just have to find them although most of my friends are older and the women I have dated since my x-wife have been older I still have some very close friends my age, so you just have to find them and not judge to soon.
as one guy said on this post age is nearly a number maturity is measured by life experience and a state of mind, I like to have fun but in no way to I get to crazy I am always looking to make the best out of the present and future.

my children don't do those things and never have

my daughter has worked since she was 14 and has lived on her own since she was 20

my sons -oldest on his own since 19- Bachelor's Degree IT Consultant, second oldest - grad student in Physics, works at a local Air Base, lives at home but makes a considerable contribution - car repairs, yard maintenance, carpentry companion to younger brother (when he can be found). The youngest is about to turn 17 and still in high school, but goes to a Catholic school where there are expectations.....So yes, OP, you have managed to fall in with a much different crowd than my sons & their friends, & my daughter.

........the question is not ARE there young people with these types of values, but why aren't you finding them? But anyway thanks for allowing me to brag again!!!

oh and P.S. I'm not naieve enough to claim that the 6ft rugrats achieve perfection, and a few of their friends are a little hairy around the eyeballs, But they were raised to accept & treat everyone well - even if they're a little hairy around the eyeballs...

Well there are loads of successful young people out there ,
age got nothing to do with anything .....
there are 30&40 odd year people who are immature
don't have a clue as to what they want ....
........am a mature 20 year old
certain situations and decisions i have to make on a daily basis
am responsible for myself
the bible says 'your body is a temple ,take care of it '

I think that is something that each generation deals with regardless of the age... We all see things in a different perspective if at any time you feel those around you don't have the same interest as yourself then it may be time to change those that are in your every day life till you find those you feel enhances your life instead of drag it down..whoa

Hi gummy waving You're on the right road...stay there. I think it's just a hard world these days. With both parents working and having to struggle just to keep food on the table with some families is no small task. Alot of kids don't get the direction from the parents that they need and grow up with alot of insecurities so they just "hang".

I see the worse part of it tho. I drive school bus for the ones that get kicked out of all the other schools for not being able to function in one way or another. They mass transport them to a school and try to rehab them. For the most part they don't. They end up dropping out or end up in juvie.

I agree. I remember the days of my ma not liking the long hair hippies that I hung around with laugh . Keep looking like it was stated here and you'll find there are alot of nice, motivated people your age.

I think that young people often take their cue from older people and from media....these days they dont get alot of great role models from either group

older people are often so busy trying to 'stay young' and the media is mostly full of sexual inuendo and divisive politics,,,, caring about anyone else isnt the theme of the day for most kids because they have noone teaching them that it should be

noone wants to be a'grown up' anymore, noone wants responsibility for anyone but themself, noone wants to step up to the role and so we are becoming a culture of adolescence(in all age ranges)
