I saw a good profile today, and it surprised me.

This wasn't one of those "I love my friends and family" blandfests that are all too common on sites all over the world. This was someone talking about her life, about some serious things in her past, some things that mattered to her.

She wasn't trying to build herself up, she wasn't trying to be a celebrity, she wasn't trying to glamorize anything. She wrote with feeling and sincerity and it seemed to me that she was interested in finding someone to communicate with.

The profile wasn't long, but it was deep. And I found myself wondering why there can't be more of these.

Because, in the end, if you're really interested in meeting somebody, isn't it better to let them know, right up front, something about who you are -- as opposed to hiding behind the "long walks on the beach" which was a cliche long before the internet even existed?

What we need -- and this was alluded to in another thread -- is a way to determine who really wants to meet someone, and who's just here to make third grade peepee and poopoo jokes....

It gives me hope when you find a good profile, man. Hehe. I'm honestly getting worried because most of the women in Michigan haven't been seen in over a month, apparently.

Not looking to shatter any notions or anything. I just know that the more people talk, the more they reveal their true nature and every nature is flawed. (Oh hell, what if she is a well written and eloquent stand up comic who specializes in pee and poo jokes?)

I agree that most are less than impressive, so it is refreshing to see one now and again that captures your attention. I can honestly say in my 2 years of 'dating sites' I have only come across a handful of profiles that stood out in some way. Family, kids and walks on the beach were not mentioned in any of them.
I do still like the 3rd grade humor on occasion...

Let's just say I understand how these things work -- if she was 897,000 miles away, she'd probably be VERY interested in me.

As she's actually MUCH closer than that, she'd probably find me "complicated and intimidating" and avoid me like Typhus. Typhus being the crazy guy down the street who throws ironing boards at everybody.

Well since it has taken so long to find an impressive profile, I'd say that's half the battle. You are complicated and intimidating..so what, most people are at first. Take a chance, it may be 3 years before your impressed again.

I sent her a note expressing my appreciation for what she wrote and the way she wrote it. Simple and direct.

I'm long past the point where I have any intentions of chasing anybody. As you say, a well-worded profile is no guarantee of compatibility, although it could indicate the potential for communication.

But from what I've seen, my concept of what constitutes "compatibility" was driven to extinction sometime around 1999. I'm totally willing to be proven wrong, but I really don't see that happening!
