The Truth Behind Hip Hop: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GIt7qpWgno&feature=PlayList&p=36B5B625C640932B&index=4 Actually the person is a bigot. If you want to look at the music with a negative influence you have to look much farther than just hip hop or rap. White rock music started the evil trend back in the day. Music that spoke of having sex with corpses and such was here long before rap became main stream. |

I would expand the claim to include ALL MEDIA. Whenever an image or an idea is pounded into ones head, it becomes 'normal'. The media has a way of setting the standards culturally and defining what is 'normal' so that right and wrong easily become blurred with popular and unpopular. As an atheist and a fan of both hip hop and metal, I agree emphatically. I tend not to listen to specific artists or specific songs which I think encourage anti-social thoughts/feelings/behaviors. There is a great deal of misogyny in hip hop, but I won't judge the entire genre based on that. I'm perpetually disappointed in the way that these discussions are clouded by two opposing camps, like the "Censor violent video games!" camp and the "Censorship is evil, and therefore violent video games are okay" camp. I am opposed to government censorship, and support private censorship and personal boycotts. |

I think people speak in terms that their listener would understand. It is probable that this pastor was speaking to a number of people for whom HIP HOP was very popular(would not have made sense to give this sermon in nashville, for instance, where hip hop is not all that popular in the first place). |

My very first experience in a Baptist church almost cost me my left hand. My daughter's mom, shortly after we got together, talked me into going to church with her. There I sit with my long hair, having listened to some Heavy Metal music on the way to the church, and the preacher just happened to pick that particular Sunday to have a sermon about eh " Evils " of Heavy Metal music. I have always been one to question people who make broad claims...and this would have been no different. When I heard the preacher say " It's either good Christian music, or it's spawned from THE DEPTHS OF HELL!!!! " my daughter's mom IMMEDIATELY grabbed my left hand and put an absolute deathgrip on it to keep me from saying anything...lmao Of course, later in life, I managed to get banned from another ( completely unrelated ) Baptist church for asking a simple question of the preacher. Another ex talked me into going with her. The preacher was a real Hellfire and Brimstone kind of guy. She leaned over to me and whispered ( in the middle of the sermon ) that the preacher had had a heart attack while preaching a couple of years before. So...on the way out...in the greeting line...it finally came to be our turn to say something to the preacher, praise the sermon or whatever...and I asked him... I hear that you had a heart attack while preaching once. He said " Yes sir. I certainly did. Only by the grace of God am I here today. " I looked at him and said... " Think maybe that was God's way of telling you that you needed to mellow out??? " Yeah...I got banned for that. * shrugs * Unfortunately there are many ignorant hatred filled people that hide right in front of our faces (i.e. the pulpit) Being a metal fan myself I've encountered this more often than I care to count. I have many friends who are Christian and sport the typical hairy rocker look and they all have similar stories to tell. Thankfully there are many others who have actually read their bibles and know better than to judge people based on appearance or musical preference. It's all about what's on the inside, which for music is the lyrics. Then of course there is the factor of country music (usually said to be clean and prim and proper...), which generally uses the same instruments as rock/metal bands. That can only give one of 2 conclusions - Either it's all evil (not that the screaming bigots would agree) or it really is about content (that's the suspiciously logical and rational option - it'll never catch on ) |

They've been saying Satan is influencing music forever. Probably as long as it has been around. I know some churches that dont even use instruments. *shrugs* I do think there are negative things portrayed in some music, and that, to be "cool" ( I feel older and older the more I go on) people buy into stereotypes that the media sets up. It's important to take everything you see and hear with a grain of salt, but most people don't put that into practice. Yeah, they tend to be the literalist types...paranoia maniacs. Scared little children all their lives... |

I personally agree with the Ministers message. It's not a popular belief, but I think his message is very true.

I can agree that there are negative lyrics out there in all genre of music, yes even Christian music can be a negative influence on folks.

I know it affects me negatively...have you heard that washed out ripped off crap? Nothing original about it..SSDD. The only decent Christian band was Kansas but Livgren eventually went over the rainbow...what a waste. |

Excellent music and the message isn't so " in your face " as to be obnoxious. |

Guess I need to pay attention to lyrics, and not the beat of the music! |

Satan gets blamed for everything, rather then people taking responsibility for their own selves.
Personal responsibility never was a big thing for humans, if one looks at our past history. |

assuming you believe in a devil who is the enemy of man and anything god creates,
wouldnt you expect him to use any form of music or art or anything at all to achieve his purpose of subverting and distorting God's work? |
