Deal with a natural disaster like Louisvill's flooding, California's fires, or Georgia's tornadoes? What have you done to prepare to survive and recover from a major disaster?

Ike hit, 11 months ago actually and I learned alot. I need to have CASH and a cell phone charger for my car.
We already had alot of canned food that could be heated on my gas stove and we always have oodles of bottled / jugged water. O, I also learned to have instant coffee on hand. It was hot after 2 weeks without air, but we made it. |

Where I live if an earthquake hits and the Wasatch Front collapses, we would all just be pretty much sol anyway, cause were all sitting ducks here in the valley surrounded by mountains...big mountains.

I keep such things on hand just in case.... |

All of Kentucky was hit by a bit ice storm last winter, I had no power for 10 days, and had to move out of town with my parents just to stay warm and shower.
Oh and Louisville sucks, GO UK! ![]() |

When Great Britain get hit by more than two inches of snow in a hour the whole country grinds to an almost standstill. If we get anything major we would have no chance in coping with it well.

Let's see....
a disaster is coming and my world will change and have to slip into survival mode..... I would have to just hump everything with a pulse...to generate heat for the thermal dynamics. To try to propogate and boost the gene pool. And if I am gonna die...I would prefer that it happen right after orgasm. Flooding...blizzard...eath quake...tsunami....drought....famine... all sound like legitimate reasons to have sex. If not then...then WHEN? |

I guess experience is a "good" teacher.
I keep certified copies of birth certificates, a duplicate social security card, a state identification card, a DVD of my most cherished pictures, an address book, and a minimum of cash in a saftey deposit box outside my community that a trusted relative can mail me in an enclosed stamped self addressed envelope on request. In the bottom of my closet is a stash bag that has the basics I need if I end up in the Hospital. A bathrobe, warm socks, a roll of quarters, pen, stamped envelope, small journal, and a change of clothes to come home in. A photo copy of insurance cards, my advance directive, and a stocking cap. (Hospitals are always cold.) Then, even if I have to send a friend to get it. I have what I want in one spot and I maintain my privacy. Having lived without power various times I keep a couple of popcorn cans of charcoal, matches, a large roll of foil, and a small table top bbq. A bag of kitty litter for a personal porta potty. And of course canned food and bottled water. I also tend to keep my gas tanks in the top half. I do think I will get the car charger for my cell phone; good idea. I will say I have thought about getting a generator for my home. Or at least lobby my community center to install one. It seems strange to me that we are no better prepared for natural disasters than some third world countries. |

I will have to admit I'm not prepared for one at all. Around here most likely would be a Tornado the way it has seemed they have started liking Texas more. The only way I could prepare for that is a shelter. Which you very seldom see around here where I live. But then my luck I would build one and would be on the other side of town when one did hit and could not even get too it. So unless you have your stuff where it would be safe from a disaster and would not be damaged so maybe you could get to it even later most likely would do no good.
I understand those that want to prepare just in case. |

Deal with a natural disaster like Louisvill's flooding, California's fires, or Georgia's tornadoes? What have you done to prepare to survive and recover from a major disaster? one for me and one for me if I miss...... ![]() ![]() I am quick to think as to move and to know where it is safe depending the issue...FIRST,,,know always what MIGHT be getting close to you,,,and second, DON'T live where it floods all the time. But lets face it,,if someone dropped a nuke,,,and YOU had a shelter to survive it,,,,Would you really WANT TO? As all your friends and most other family than what was with you would be gone......plus all the fall-out and radiation exposer would still kill all of you in a short time later?? |

Sorry but if they drop the bombs I hope I'm in the target path. I would not want to suffer all the stuff that would happen within this world after wards if anyone did survive.

with katrina, i was out of there, but wished that i wasn't. the whole time, i wanted to get down there, get some bass boats from the many stores there, get some SUVS to pull those, get some chainsaws, and fuel, and get the basin street gangs together, and go around and get the people out of those houses, and get them to safety. at the same time, i would have gotten food from metairie, and with the SUV's, delivered food off the I-10 ramp to the superdome and civic center as well, but the nat'l guard wouldn't let anyone in or out past loyola exit toward LaPlace..... also, i called nagin and told him to run the busses free for two days before the hurricane, and it went on his answering machine, but he did do just that, for this last hurricane threat...so he did listen......whether he takes the rest of this to heart for next time, well, that remains to be seen, but i'm going back to do business only.....never to live there again....don't wanna lose another house.....

We live in a cyclone (hurricane) region, a high bushfire region, and are in a tsunamai region also.
Last year was the closest of big cyclones here, a Cat5 in about 5 years....a small tight nasty little one... We have a bunker... and we were ready...water, food, torches, radio, first aid kit, tool box, lanterns, important paperwork and photos in a grab and go box...kids had small carryalls packed..cat cages ready, dog nearby. We spent three nights in there, and the kids are so used to it, it's like camping out for them. We would have been right for two weeks if the worst had happened. Fires? Grab the box of paperwork and photos, kids, pets and go. Tsunamai...same deal...just we would move to even higher ground |
