I thought opossums were born on the road already dead?

Thats the only way I see them.grumble

Nope, they're in my backyard and on my fence.laugh

I have a wooden front porch. I had to make a ...what to call it...wall with holes under my steps just so opposums don't get under the porch and die. I consider them to be city animals.laugh

if it was a big one Moo..it was a female...rabid or not..probably had cubs in a hole under a rock or up in a tree nearby...(they only back pack them around in the evenings for feeding and to show them thier food sources) if it was night...rabid or not..she was probably just trying to clear the way to bring out her cubs to eat....mommas are b*tchy like that.

Now you brought babies into it.tears

I've held opposum babies before at the animal shelter. They're so cute.

I know...I found a couple of strays as a kid to bring home but, my Dad would have none of it after I brought home "Oscar" ... Baby raccoon that would sleep with me..sure they are cute...but they are like a spider monkey who can get into ANYTHING and mainly operate while the humans are sleeping.

they are around bro..but VERY nocturnal...not like red neck venison (squirrel) or ghetto chickens (pidgeons)....

There numbers are fewer in the northen lattitudes...but, they can't compete with the beavers , nutria and muskrats...I kid...different food sources...possums just can't handle the yankee accents.

I had one that used to live under my deck in the backyard. He would come up on the deck and the motion sensor would go off and he would just sit there and look in at me thru the screen door,

Creepy but cool animals...I don't think it is bad Karma to help an animal that is suffering and can't be helped.flowerforyou

Sometimes death is merciful. I wouldn't agonize over it unless it is letting you let another pain go.

With a broken spine it would had an agonizing death eventually. By the time you got to it it was already most likely in shock and probably didn't even know you were a threat.

Probably a sick or injured animal if it were coming up into a habitated area. If your dog didn't get the worst of the encounter quite likely it was already been hit by a car or fallen off a dumpster.

Sorry for the tough experience but in nature life cycles and sounds like it was just the time for this one.

I learned a few things tonight from this thread. Never heard a possum called opossum though it is correct name I quess. Also didn't know that one would charge at a person, unless it was rabid. I have seen a few in my life like by the garbage, but they moved on,thought they were afraid of confrontation with people unless cornered like any animal. Sorry to ever hear of a killing of any animal as I am an animalatarian, but you put it out of it's misery as others said. Did what you thought was right at the time. It's done, over can't be changed, let it go. You must be out in rural area with all the critters you mentioned.

I spell it opossum but say "possum". Go figure.laugh

I didn't know that they charged people either. They usually freeze up when I get close to them.

Blahhhhhh

I know that opposums are nasty and ugly little critters with pouches that feed on disgusting **** (but, so do alot of Wal-Mart shoppers with the fanny packs)

I never messed with them cause I always thought it was cool that North America had the only other marsupial species out side of the Australian continent (that I am aware of) Besides...they really do only eat the bugs that I don't wanna deal with... and they are far less of a pain in the @ss than the Coons, Coyotes, Bobcats

I used to find them or their cubs as a kid.

Let's face it...they ain't pretty, they stink and they are ALWAYS infested with fleas....but, Oh man....I just really dislike taking a life of an innocent....

I know it was the right thing to do...I was really hoping it would just get up and lope off...but, the spine was reeeealllly broken.

I guess it would be easier if I knew it wasn't looking at me...scared to death..mortally wounded and hoping I would just go away and it could survive....

Damn

wait til you walk up on a dead cow and see it's stomach moving then see a possum come crawling out of it.

Bugs and insects aren't the only thing they eat sick

Don't feel too bad amigo. I will not go into a full story because well, its a bad one, but I will go over minor details.

I was helping a friend move into a cabin and while moving, things a pack of coyotes decided to show my friend and his guard dog who was boss around here, the coyotes got scared away, but the guard dog well...

I honestly couldn't do it myself and my friend told me it was only right he did it.

Not during the day time...that is buzzard and dog domain.

and there is very good reason for opossums to go to a carcass....bugs get there first....opossums are insectivores. The only North American marsupial insectivores that I am aware of (aside from the Australian Echidna..the rest are herbivores)...I used to do research for the Museums of Natural History..so if you got something I am not aware of ..hit me up..I am always interested in learning new stuff.

Really? Suprizing...most Coys only wanna hump female domestic dogs and don't even bother with male domestics..(male domestics can't keep up with those apache hounds) out here it is the wild dogs that kill other dogs.

I honestly am a city boy, I don't know much about domestic and wild animals, but again, it was all bad timing. My buddy was driving the truck up to the cabin with the second load when I was just finished unloading the first load in the house when this happened.

*edit* BAH thinking and typing of two different expierences when this happened, lol please don't lawyer my two posts and use common sense against me, guarnteed you will win, I was born without that stuff!

i probably would have cried my eyes out while doing it.

thats the kind of thing that haunts your dreams.

the taste of kill isn't natural for us.

i'd have only hoped for you to do what you did.

you know i don't always agree with you krupa,

but tonight i kinda just wanna hug you.

Yeah darlin...after taking a moment to apologize and ask for understanding...it took about a split second to actually do the deed.............I guess these things just happen but, memories like that are ones that stay crystal clear with me. I remember things like that from since I was a kid yet, can barely recall the passing of friends and relatives............strange.

We have a lot of oppossum here in Ohio.. I recently caught and took to a place where they take in animals like this, a baby raccoon whose mama got run over in front of our apartment bldg. We are on a state highway and I was afraid it would get run over. It was ok, not sick, just scared and would be released back into the woods somewhere. We alswys had raccoons for pets when I was young..they're so funny but mischievious!!
You did the right thing Eric!!
