How are they going to write checks for their rent, house payments, and utilities with cash?
Just no pleasing some people.. what was it Momma used to say about beggars and choosers??? What was it Daddy said about gift horses? Besides, I thought Obama was going to take care of all of that... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P36x8rTb3jI "I won't have to worry about putting gas in my car. I won't have to worry about paying my mortgage." What does one lady in a video have to do with anything? Obama isn't going to take care of it all. Haven't you heard? He's inherited a huge mess and a couple of wars. It's going to take years to get the mess taken care of properly. From this thread I'm thinking that you don't have children to feed or a mortgage to pay. |

From this thread I'm thinking that you don't have children to feed or a mortgage to pay. that's some sleuthing there. Is that supposed to be some kind of jab?? Oooh what a burn! So what if I don't have any rugrats?? does that earn me some kind of second class citizenship? What? I don't have rent to pay? I don't have to pay my bills? I'm supposed to feel sorry for someone with kids? Sick and tired of people with kids telling me how hard it is.. what? that's some sort of surprise? the 9 months of ankle soreness and morning sickness didn't preview the experience enough for you? One of my first real jobs, several years ago I lost my job because the guy they decided to keep over me, even though I was better than him and he was paid more then me, had kids and I didn't.. so f'ing what?? Somehow I need to be punished for not having knocked some girl up? bullcrud.. I swear.. folks just need to nut up and knock off the bellyaching.. |

Yes, being unemployed sucks. I also have other issues with all the banks listed
I think it's safer getting your card loaded than; Risking it be lost in the mail, someone stealing it from your mailbox or getting jacked at the ATM. Like the article stated. If you go in and ask for a withdrawal, it's free. Been free to do so, for as long as I can remember. And that's a lonnnnnnggg time. |

why should they be allowed to forego ATM charges?? Everyone else has to pay them. just more poopy-pantsed crybabying... The article said, "in several states the unemployed have no choice but to use the debit cards." That's the catch. They have no choice. That's the point. "The remainder still use traditional checks or direct deposit." Why do some banks not let them have a choice to avoid the fees? from your article: The banks say their programs offer convenience. They also provide at least one way to tap the money at no charge, such as using a single free withdrawal to get all the cash at once from a teller.
again... why should I feel sorry for someone having to pay ATM fees?? Just because they're unemployed and receiving government aid? whaaa.. my peepee hurts... That still is giving them no choice, IMO. Who wants to walk around with the cash? How are they going to write checks for their rent, house payments, and utilities with cash? They are being penalized. Hmmm....you might have caught a STD. You better take care of that. Seriously. It isn't like they're choosing to be unemployed. Of course they are.... Don't you know that the poor of this country are just lazy asses who want someone else to do it all for them!! They are poor by their own choice if you let it be told by these so called hard asses in this country. What defines a hard ass? A person who cannot see outside of their own self depreciating life to understand that not everyone's life is the same. My own father is one of these so called hard asses, but when he was young and struggling he understood the struggle but once he became financially secure he forgot the struggle of the poor. Not having enough money to eat, keeping the heat on 65 degrees because you can't afford the gas, etc... He used to talk about those days and he understood but not any more. He doesn't want to feel the empathy for others, it is easier for him to discount them and make them less human for their tribulations. As for these fees, we had the same problem when I worked for the welfare department and we changed over to the debit cards, the bank wanted to fee the clients to death to get to their money. A welfare check is nothing barely enough to pay rent if it is enough to pay rent, alot of times it is not and the bank wanted to take 3 dollars here and 2 dollars there. 5 bucks to a welfare recipient is alot of money. We had to work something out with the stores so that clients could get their money out of their cards without the fees. I sure hope none of these so called hard asses ever lose all the helpful people they have in their lives and have to ask for help because how would they or could they possibly lower themselves that low, low enough to be human. |

Dude, I'm not taking up for the banks.. Don't put me in that boat at all! I can't stand the ball-washing bastards. Bank of America can dry up and blow away for all I care. Actually I think the world might be better off without their stupid antics.. that wasn't my point.. crying about ATM fees to access one's unemployment aid is a little much, in my opinion.. there are plenty of ways to get around that if one put one's industriousness to it. Don't people have savings and checking accounts anymore?? can't they transfer that money into a checking account? I don't make a ton of money. maybe one day I will. I still pay taxes, though. I'm not going to see a penny from the so-called "Stimulus". I'm not going to get "mortgage assistance". No one is coming along to pay down my debt and clear up my credit history.. NOR WOULD I WANT IT!!! I refuse to steal a brick from my neighbor house to build my own. so why should I give two flips about the "plight of the ATM fees"??? I got my "Life Sucks. Get a Helmet" helmet a long damn time ago. I've been out of work before. it sucks but you get your butt up and go do something until things get better. In my time out of work, I never went to the government with my hand out. That would be dudette, Raiderfan, but no matter, I am not getting anything either because I Don't need it, though It wouldn't hurt to have a bit more work around. But I can still empathize with people in worse shape and with far more responsibility for children etc. There are poeple through no fault of their own caught up in all this too, they don't deserve more fees on top of it all. I don't really see anyone in here whining about it specifically, just informing us of how empathetic the banks are NOT. I think assuming people are going to get thier credit history cleared is strange, where did you get that? Anyway just saying it doesn't hurt to be empathetic... but of course no law against not being... |

that's some sleuthing there. I'd say you have it pretty damn easy if you don't have the responsibility of children in this economy. So it's twice as pathetic that you have no natural empathy for others not in your place. Personally I think you are the one whining more than anyone in this thread. If parenthood is simply knocking up some girl, then I can see why you are the way you are... Do woman a favor and stay single will ya... |

people make the choice to raise kids.

It seems it is a up and coming thing to put all money on check cards. Many places (employers)now are opting out of checks altogether and if you don't have automatic deposit...you get the check card with you wages posted to it on payday.

Extra fees hit jobless State-issued debit cards carry charges to withdraw benefits By Christopher Leonard | The Associated Press | February 24, 2009 For hundreds of thousands of workers losing their jobs during the recession, there's a new twist to their financial pain: Even as they're collecting unemployment benefits, they're paying bank fees to get access to their money. Thirty states have struck such deals with banks that include Citigroup Inc., Bank of America Corp., JPMorgan Chase and US Bancorp, an Associated Press review of the agreements found. All the programs carry fees, and in several states the unemployed have no choice but to use the debit cards. Some banks even charge overdraft fees, even though they could decline charges for more than what's on the card. "It's a racket. It's a scam," said Rachel Davis, a 38-year-old dental technician from St. Louis who was laid off in October. Davis was given a MasterCard issued through Central Bank of Jefferson City and recently paid $6 to make two $40 withdrawals. The banks say their programs offer convenience. They also provide at least one way to tap the money at no charge, such as using a single free withdrawal to get all the cash at once from a teller. The fees are raising questions from lawmakers who recently voted to infuse banks with taxpayer money to keep them afloat. Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., a member of the House Financial Services Committee, said the situation points to "yet another example of how we need to regulate the ways in which banks charge overdraft and other fees." Some banks, depending on the agreement negotiated with each state, also make money on the interest they earn after the state deposits the money and before it's spent. The banks and credit card companies also get roughly 1 to 3 percent off the top of each transaction made with the cards. Ten states — including the unemployment hot spots of California, Florida and South Carolina — are considering such programs or have signed contracts. The remainder still use traditional checks or direct deposit. Wondering is enrollment in this program mandatory or by choice? At least in Oregon, its by choice. And the fees are charged by the bank for the privilege of using the card. The state has nothing to do with it. I've been collecting benefits on the card for close to a year now. The only time the bank charges their fee is if I withdraw funds off the card more than twice a month, and I think that's their standard fee for anyone who uses a US Bank ATM machine that doesn't have a checking account. Ironically enough, I have a checking account but since the UI card isn't tied to it, I still get charged the fee anyway. |

Many places (employers)now are opting out of checks altogether and if you don't have automatic deposit...you get the check card with you wages posted to it on payday. Kat It would be great if you could withdraw money in units other than 20. I always end up with some kind of remainder on the card when I would prefer to have it zeroed out. |
