While I think banks are scum, there is an easy fix to this...

Take the unemployment card to a credit union. Use $5 of the cash on your card to open an account. If you are going to be charged either way then phuck em'. Problem solved. You now have your own credit union account to make deposits and withdraws.

And the nice part is if you ever close your account you get your $5 back.

From this thread I'm thinking that you don't have children to feed or a mortgage to pay.

that's some sleuthing there. Is that supposed to be some kind of jab?? Oooh what a burn! So what if I don't have any rugrats?? does that earn me some kind of second class citizenship? What? I don't have rent to pay? I don't have to pay my bills? I'm supposed to feel sorry for someone with kids?

Sick and tired of people with kids telling me how hard it is.. what? that's some sort of surprise? the 9 months of ankle soreness and morning sickness didn't preview the experience enough for you?

One of my first real jobs, several years ago I lost my job because the guy they decided to keep over me, even though I was better than him and he was paid more then me, had kids and I didn't.. so f'ing what?? Somehow I need to be punished for not having knocked some girl up? bullcrud..

I swear.. folks just need to nut up and knock off the bellyaching..

No, it wasn't a jab at all. You are very defensive about it though.
You are even whining after unfairly claiming that others were whining.

Sorry...I didn't have 9 mths. of ankle soreness or morning sickness.
And..I wasn't just some girl that got knocked up.

People that are unemployed and have children worry about feeding and taking care of people that are dependent on them for care. Why is that difficult to understand?

That does sound good. What I got from the article was that they didn't have a choice as to where the checks were sent.

what happens if you take your card inside the bank and see a teller??? Same fees?huh

Not an option. They're strictly ATM cards. I've tried a direct transfer, they won't do it.

you have the option of not using the ATM Card instead having the unemployment benefits directly deposited into a checking account.

Yes. But I don't trust the State of Oregon with direct access to my checking account. Go figure.

The ATM cards are also debit cards so that you can use them for purchases and it does cost a fee to use it that way either

It depends on where you use it. (Just like any other debit card.)

True. Of course you're still limited to withdrawals in increments of $20 so there's always something left on the card. (Just something that irks me, sorry.)

That and I'm too lazy to set up another account with a credit union. (I already have one with my car loan though, but I just deal with that once a month.) I think its funny though that the debit card through UI is through US bank and even though I am a US Bank account holder, I cannot directly transfer funds between the two. I think you should be able to. Obviously the bank feels otherwise.

The cards you get for UI don't give you an option.

He said everyone. Not just the unemployed.
Besides, my state issues payment by choice. Most choose to receive a check.

At least your state does. Here it's direct deposit or debit card. That's it.
