 How would you suggest to a loved one that they need to go on a diet?

diets don't work
changing eating habits
(healthy foods, more water, cutting sugar/carbs, etc.)
and exercising will help you get in better shape

if the person doesn't want to get healthy
they won't no matter what you threaten them with

If all else fails, call them a bunch of derogatory names having to do with their fattitude.

Beachball. Butterball. Jabba the Slut. Porky. Large Marge.

They'll all work when shaming your portly significant other into losing some tonnage.

Wow with friend's/loved ones like some of you wouldn't need any enemys.

If you love someone you attack the problem not the person.

Do they have the time, space, money, freedom from responsibilities and pain to be more active? A lot of families dump on one person to be the "strong" one and the stress is really too much. I have seen people, especially kids, be the emotional whipping post for the entire family. Sometimes people just are too mentally exhausted to have any energy left after work. Some people get stuck with all the boreing, dirt jobs and their spirit just wilts. Depression then creates a vicious cycle.

Being and activity buddy can help but sometimes giving a little comfort, support, and appreciation can work wonders. So does getting out and having a little fun with out lectures and treating them like a failure.

If you are like my ex, you just tell them " You are a fat disgusting pig. You make me sick just looking at you. "

Slip some tapeworm eggs into their food. They'll slim up in no time.

Just don't take a look in the toilet after they've pinched a loaf, though.

I would not ever even breach the subject with anyone I loved or did not love because being thin is not important in them being lovable, respectable, beautiful, worthy, etc....

If someone decides on their own that they want to lose weight to be healthier or happier inside of themselves then I would be completely supportive but if they stop doing it, I will still be supportive.

Bravo! And kudos to the fella who said "Fat people know they're fat."

While being concerned about a loved one's health is admirable, don't be telling someone else how to live their life. Sure, be supportive and kind, blah blah blah. But... until you're perfect, don't be picking them apart. That's the last thing they need. Instead, try a little unconditional love... might do more for their self-esteem than any nagging ever will.

everybody is on a diet, if they aren't then they aren't eating and starvation is BAD

True, but a minimum, they'll be light enough to pick up and throw out on their ass for bringing drugs into the house.

Well, after a few hints and trying to steer them to healthy choices of foods and getting them off the sofa.
I will become a bit more rude to the point of...

Darlin, I adore you and I want you to be with me as long as possible, I am concerned that with your wt. gain you are going to die on me while we are on a hike. One of the nitemares I have been having is something really gross and scary.. I keep dreaming you have a heart attack I can't pack you out while I am going for help a bear comes and well darlin.. get the picture...flowerforyou

I dont think anyone could get fat around me. What with the 20 rounds of sex a day and the huge salads I would make.....oh and if I keep dropping my hanky they would have to pick it up thus touching their toes.......laugh laugh
