It is a good idea to require a simple 4 panel test to get on welfare, if the person is not doing drugs...what is the worry? There is to me little to no concern about this issue except to those that do drugs, if you are on welfare for legitimate reasons there is abslutely no reason to even worry about a simple drug screen. I'm not saying most people on welfare use drugs, but a lot do. This could save the already fragile economy millions in a fiscal year being able to legally drop some people from the program, as well it would give more money to those that use the program as a temporary option until they can find work. Fear - not a lot of people on welfare are doing drugs. And they don't have much money for it either. I agree with Winx, in theory anyway. My experience is limited but here goes. A) how can they afford drugs? Welfare doesn't cover anything, really, it's not enough for food and shelter so where do the drugs come from? B) I would think that most people on drugs would want as little to do with government and law as possible, so that they don't run the risk of getting caught and going to jail. And, what if someone is on disability and is taking prescription medication? Their drug test would come up positive. Now granted, they could prove they had a prescription and all would be well. But, the computer wouldn't necessarily know that and they could conceivably lose desperately needed assistance until the problem is straightened out. And let's take this one step further. In order that everyone's rights to privacy are not violated (or, I should say are violated equally), how about everyone who applies for any job anywhere needs to be tested for drugs and alcohol. Cause, when you think about it, most jobs depend in some way or other on the government. Let's see, how else? How about you are not entitled to police or fire or ems services if you cannot pass a drug/alcohol screening? Because those services are paid by the government. Do you see the absurdity of this? The OP's post (which, btw, isn't even original, it's been making the rounds of the 'net for years) sounds good on the service, gives everyone a chance to be righteously indignant, but when you get right down to it, it really fails a logic test. must be different around here in oregon.... i see a lot of gals that have 4-5 children all a yr apart or so cause you dont have to look for work till you baby is one or so...or it used to be that way so they would pop out baby after baby with different dads to stay on assistance... yes there are normal people that get help but it does not seem to be the majority here... i took my son to foodstamps last month to sign up.. he got laid off job market here is horrible now.... im sitting in the parking lot smelling everyones cigarettes they can afford yet they can afford food? hummm... and im talking i seen 8 people there and 7 of them were smoking! pack of smokes here is 4 bucks average. there are a lot of people here in oregon that cant get help that need it they are the lower middle class people all their money goes to normal bills and the ones that cheat the system can go to get help for christmas presents at 8 different places.. ive seen it over and over.. i remember working 2 jobs and my kids getting 3 presents each and the children on welfare got 15 presents each etc... the system has gotten stricter here through the yrs but its sad what a person making 8k a yr and activily looking for a better job or a second job cant get help cause they have 2 cars or maybe they make that money have no insurance.... and have no children living at home so they get denied any health insurance from the state... facts are the lower middle class people here are poorer than the people that get help.. and that is why people dont want to get off getting help cause they then will be worse off.... jmo Hell, in Cali all you have to be is a illeal alien and you'll get all the help you want, but if you lived there your whole life and worked there. so, since I am on Medicare and Social Security Disability I should have to take a urine test? and if I fail? you would cut off my Medicare in which case I would die that is your logic? Apparently, yes, that is the logic One of my best friends, my 2nd dad really, is in the same situation. He is legitimately in need of help, due to the loss of both of his legs and one hand and is legally blind. This is a man who has worked since he was 12, every day, paid into the system, was a teacher, volunteered to coach Little League, volunteered in many other ways. Now that he's in his 60's and is in need, society wants to turn their back on him. He is already made to feel like a criminal for needing help, has to show up on the "system's" whim to make sure he hasn't regrown his legs or regained his eyesight. They check on him to make sure he's not cheating the "system" more than any parole officer would ever dream of checking on their parolees. It's pathetic, really. |

here your car can only be worth a certain amount or it used to be... like 3k ok so sell your car... spend the money you made off of it then come back for help...say your a single parent and have 4 kids well you now sold your 7k car for 5k cause you needed the food now to feed your 5 kids you go back to get the foodstamps a month later..cause it only took one month to use that 2k and you are now behind on your electric bill as well.. you have replaced your 7k car with a 3k car that broke down on the way to your appt so you have to reschedule... ok so now you have repair bills on the car and need new tires so you can go look for work in your new pos... yes this makes sense to me

Reminder - people can only be on it for under 5 yrs. Different states can be less. Then they are kicked off of it.
If you actually need it, i can see asking for the help. But even being out here in Utah the illegals know how to work it so the government will halp pay for them to live in a house and they don't have to pay for nothing. There going to do a sweep oput here soon and i say good. get rid of the people that much off the system and are not legal. This way the ones that are and trying to make a living can do somthing with there lives. |

They have their own programs that don't have any of the requirements that welfare has. Your tax money at work. Hell, the state government was paying for interpreters at a job I worked at for ESL people where every job required the employee to be fluent in English (Unless you were Hispanic, Vietnamese, or some other non-English speaking foreign minority, then that went out the window.) On the upside, at least those people were legal, that I know of. |

I would like to add that drug use by people who also collect public assistance is a problem that usually started way before the need for public assistance to support children.
The fact that many people abandon their responsibilities to support their children after divorce and custodial parents are forced to survive in substandard neighborhoods even if they do collect public assistance is a major part of the problem. Many times the welfare mother is not in fact the one on drugs but the partially abandoned pre-adolecent and adolecent age children that are out of control or earn money the only way they can. Kids will fit in somewhere and often it is in the groups that will accept them. Groups of kids who have never heard the word no by parents who work constantly and ignore them so they can party like there is no end in sight and what they don't steal from their family medicine cabinets they go buy it in the low rent districts adding to the drug and drug related problems. |

5 years of free money, I don't think anyone is complaining on the length of that. If anything thats too long. The apathy of having completely free money for 5 years can be substantial in future productivity and effort. Im not biased I'm just referring to human nature.
View it as a drug with a longer quitting time. |

It shouldn't be the job of the government to be a teat for the masses. Contrary to what most of those people sucking off that teat may think.

Oregon helping a lot of the wrong people Pretty much. They do some good too, although that seems to be minimal and not without a fight. |

I would like to know if for some reason you lost your job and suddenly had to support a child would you want to be humiliated by having to prove you don't do drugs? You choose to work for your employer and at anytime could change jobs. no one said it wouldnt be hamiliating.. however i used to drive a 24 ft box truck i scraped off a 50 cent reflecter do you think that is not hamiliating to spend 3 hours of my free time going to the dr for a drug test for that? i say yes it was! cripes i just took a drug test like 3 weeks prior for my yearly exam i had to do |

Oregon helping a lot of the wrong people Pretty much. They do some good too, although that seems to be minimal and not without a fight. That's how it is everywhere and that's the beauty of big government/brother. It's impossible to get **** done, sure you can petition but how many signatures do you need? and who has the time to solicit the form? I think that companies should start requiring IQ tests instead of drug tests. This country leans to much toward socialism, materialism, and conformity as it is. At least with an IQ test the drug users wouldn't have to be labeled as "drug users" and could possibly even be credited for being intelligent? WOA, I know you guys are thinking, an IQ TEST? At least we would all be labeled as equals and your hard work in learning, coordination, and problem solving skills would actually benefit you and not just be another bull**** word on your "resume" |

so, since I am on Medicare and Social Security Disability I should have to take a urine test? and if I fail? you would cut off my Medicare in which case I would die that is your logic? Medicare and Social Security are totally different from Welfare.with Social Security and Medicare, they pay you what YOU'VE already paid in,it's not coming from someone elses tax dollars. the only time it comes from someone elses is when the reciever is underage and then it goes by what the parents have made. i was on SSI from the age of 4 til the age of 18,so i know about it |
