Topic: this maybe a stupid question... | |
---|---|
Why is it, that I was told I can't include personal information...( the link to myspace page)...I think this is kind of a stupid rule, being that essentially, all of the same, basics are in our profiles here, that is on myspace...
After all...the point of majority of those who come to this site is to look for a friend...or more...am I wrong in thinking that getting to know someone, usually requires personal information? |

After all...the point of majority of those who come to this site is to look for a friend...or more...am I wrong in thinking that getting to know someone, usually requires personal information? Actually, I was under the impression that it was OK to include a MySpace link -- I've seen people do it plenty of times -- although maybe the rules have been changed....? I've been on sites where someone would post an e-mail address, or a phone number, etc., that wasn't theirs -- it was a way to get back at somebody for something, a nuisance thing. The best way to avoid that sort of situation is to just not allow personal e-mail, IM, phone, etc., contact information in the forums. It's too public, it's too easy for people to play games with that stuff, and create havoc for somebody else. You're right that getting to know someone requires personal information -- but it's safer to do that through private e-mail or IM or something less open to the public. And, having been on MySpace (albeit briefly), I shudder to hear this site compared to THAT one in any way! |

I wouldn't know for certain but if I were to take a guess I'd say it was related to identity theft and personal safety.
What you think of as personal info may be OK but another person posting may not have your sensibilities, so everything is banned to cover all bases. A little info here, a little phishing there...who knows what bad stuff may happen? I work at a C.U. and I have seen it all. You really do not want to know. |

What you may not understand is that sites like these are trying to garner enough membership to warrant advertising sponsors.
It will do this site ZERO good to have someone meet you here just to get linked to where you can just say "Screw it...I like talking to this person on (other) sites better" and provide a method of funneling away thier own membership. It wouldn't make good business sense. |

Humm maybe we should ask you who told you that you could not post your myspace addy?
This is a new one to me for that is one site this site has allowed since I have been here. So maybe there was a miss under standing somewhere. As izzie said personal as in phone numbers addresses that type of personal info is not allowed. |
