It depends on the situation at hand. And, are we talking about morally or legally?

Let's say a serial rapist was tried and convicted and is now free, and this is proven, should that person be allowed to be a member here if the admin knows about them?

Morally the site owners have an obligation to refuse that person. But I have to wonder if they would be civilly liable if they refused the person. Since you can assume everyone is going to sue. Is it the same as a business "we reserve the right to refuse service to anyone"?

I think there was a case like this a while back. Or maybe it was a Law and Order episode.

IMO, no, but because a site is free, to check everyone out, they'd probably have to start charging a fee. I looked at one site where you have to give them a phone # to contact you before they'll let you join, but you have to PAY also to be a member.

I would think if it were a serial rapist they would not take the time to stalk someone on here. A pervert would do that but I don't think a serial rapist would but hell, who knows now a days.

I think she means if it comes to their attention. Not checking people out before hand.

This is addressed in the Terms of Use:

http://mingle2.com/welcome/showTOS

The short version is, you're using the site at your own risk -- see the DISCLAIMERS OF WARRANTIES and LIMITATION OF LIABILITY sections --

Having spent a lot of time talking about these issues, and others, with Mike and Charles and the guys, I would say that if you have specific information about a member that indicates to you that they may be a danger to someone on this site, you should definitely contact an admin. They can investigate further and take the appropriate action.

If sex offenders are required to register when moving to a new town etc., then shouldn't they be required to register as such when joining a site that exposes a lot of people to them? And while I realise that they are hardly likely to volunteer such information, if someone DID find out such information and made it known to the site owners then shouldn't there be some sort of warning made, not just to the person in question but to the site members too?

Why does everyone pass responsibility on to others?

Jesus, this is the real world. A zebra can't cry to anyone if a lion attacks and eats them. It's your ultimiate responsibility to protect yourself.

Get a gun, delete your account, change names, do what you go to do to survive.

If I take a safari full of people and know there are lions ahead, and I don't tell them "hey, maybe you should watch out for that lion" and if somone in my safari group gets mauled, what respoinsibility do I have for not telling them where the lions are?
