Like him or not, Barack Obama is a rock star. Sure, he’s not a rock ’n’ roll star. He may have U2’s “City of Blinding Lights” blasting before many events (though not Thursday at Yunker Farm in Fargo), but he lists jazz acts such as Miles Davis and John Coltrane and the Bach cello suites as favorites.

But Obama has one – or rather a few – sure-fire signs he’s rocking the campaign trail: He’s got T-shirts.

Vendors set up shop in the Fargodome parking lot Thursday afternoon selling Obama buttons, caps, stickers and $15 T-shirts.

They were pretty nice, considering that T-shirts for touring bands that play inside the dome start at about $30.

It seemed like a good deal, unless you looked at the labels and saw that the shirts were made in Honduras.


I don’t want to beat you over the head with the irony here, but since it’s the end of a long holiday weekend and your senses may be numb by too much sun, beer or fireworks, I’ll spell it out: These T-shirts, promoting a candidate for American president, were made in a foreign country.

I called the Fargodome to see if they knew about the sales, but as it was the beginning of a long weekend, no one answered.

The woman running one of the tables wouldn’t give her name but said the vendor is independent of the campaign. While the Obama camp flies from one event to the next, this outfit, based out of Florida, drives, following the candidate’s stops.

Of course, the Obama Web site is also into marketing its man and offers gear with his name and message.

obama.com, states: “All of our products are top quality, union and USA made and produced.”

Shirts at the Obama store are $20.08. Get it, he’s running for president in 2008? Cute.

I’d imagine this puts the Obama camp in an interesting quandary. On one hand, there is an organization selling gear that competes with your own store and not reflecting the candidate’s ideals, thus taking money out of the campaign coffers. On the other hand, this other operation is contributing to the visibility of the candidate and getting the message out there.

To me, T-shirts should be cheap and easy. Controversial, sure, but never a hassle.

So $15 for a T-shirt is almost too spendy for me. And the notion that the message on the front conflicts with what the label says and therefore what it actually is, well, that’s just too much.

I’m not damning anyone who bought one of the shirts. But this whole thing has got me thinking I should look at labels more, really know what I’m buying and what I’m supporting, regardless of what’s said on the front.

When I was younger, I bought lots of band shirts, which confused my father.

“You mean you’re paying someone so you can advertise for them?” he asked.

I told him that it was a statement of who I was. Unfortunately, at the time I was a big fan of Ratt.

Now I see we were both right. You are what you wear, so you better be comfortable with what that says and how it fits.

I do realize there are tons of people who help with campaigning...volunteers, interns ...But a man whose reputation is based on putting jobs back in America, and whose own website states "All products are high quality, union & American made, and support the campaign" shouldnt he be "the guy" in charge of making sure the funds added to his campaign follow what he represents?

Obama didn't make American Trade policies what they are today, and I know the AFL-CIO doesn't like them either.
They do however support Obama!

I cant imagine Obama personally being responsible for the purchase of T-shirts sold by concessions at one of his speeches.

he should make it mandatory that a concessions permitted to sell at his events follow what he stands for

if he can not do this with his campain how the h*ll is he gonig to do it for the hole nation

It was a freaking T-shirt. Should all vendors now be investigated by the politicians to show that all of their products are American made? Give me a break!
