I think total opposites would not attract. Just as two people totally alike would not. I think you need enough in common to share somethings, but enough individuality to make your partner intriquing.

My parents were opposites in a lot of ways that were good, but having opposing core beliefs is what wrecked them in the end.
That's the most important thing IMO...you have to share values...all else is just a matter of how much variety you like in your life and how willing you are to go with the flow.
