Younger chicks I won't date are as follows.....

(1). Loves Justin Beiber
(2). Does not realize that phones can be used for something other than texting
(3). Is like, "For our first date, we should totally watch Gossip Girl and then blog about it".
(4). Uses the phrase "That is so totally 80's" and they are too young to even freaking know what the 80's were like.
(5). Believes Michael Jackson IS white and was never black.

I have a different list:

1. Young women who are into baseball and football
2. Young women who think the way to be smart is to say something offensive.
3. Women who think that cars are very important
4. Women who can't live without yapping about the relationship to others on Facebook. (Especially to people I don't know and never met, neither she.)
5. Those who think that it's mandatory for men to wear a baseball hat.
6. Trying to take me to a club, where I would be 10 years older than everyone else.

Oh, by the way, this isn't the first time he has been arrested.

He was arrested in 2007 for deserting the Army:

Movie creator charged [“Loose Change” producer arrested for deserting the Army]
Daily Star ^ | 2/25/07

An Oneonta man who helped produce a 9/11 conspiracy documentary that became an Internet hit was arrested Monday for allegedly deserting the Army.

Korey Rowe, 24, a veteran of Afghanistan and Iraq, was picked up by deputies at about 10:45 p.m. Monday, Otsego County Sheriff Richard Devlin Jr. said…

Rowe was arrested on a “military warrant” that Devlin said was brought to the attention of deputies by the Oneonta Police Department, who received information from a source outside of that department…

After deputies received the information from Oneonta police, they reached out to the Army, and officials from Fort Knox faxed a copy of the warrant, deputies said… He is being held without bail in the Otsego County jail and is waiting to be picked up by U.S. Army officials, Devlin said.

So first time they arrested him and he got out of it, now this time it's drug charges.
Let's see how this turns out...I guess this guy is really an irritant to some.

"Conspiracy groups for at least two years have also questioned why the World Trade Center collapsed when fires that heavily damaged similar skyscrapers around the world did not cause such destruction. Sixteen percent said it's "very likely" or "somewhat likely" that "the collapse of the twin towers in New York was aided by explosives secretly planted in the two buildings."

How many skyscrapers had a jet flying at a high rate of speed crash into them?

Sixteen percent is actually lower than I thought. I was sure there were more 9-11 truth idiots than that.

Did ya see dem biddings fall down? it just garsh darn had to be dem dare controlled dummynition. i aint no psyiocist but dag nab it.. dem biddings just aint gonna cooapse like dem dare dun.
Well here is the thing.... the 911 commision report claimed it was the fires and not the planes that took the buildings down. So why didnt they say it was the planes?

Because the jet fuel from the planes was the excellerent that created the extreme heat causing the steal to strength to weaken and the buildings collapse

Is it necessary to have jet fuel to have the fire burn at such a heat, that would weaken the steel structures? Watch out , tricky question...

Have you ever considered that Microsoft has yet to offer an OS any better overall than XP? Sounds like an expected "fleecing of America" to me. I have no respect to Mr. Gates' monopolistic organization, nor for his products.

Bingo! Windows 7 is just barely holding up to the loading speed of XP.

Try both (I have) on the same system first, let it be a fairly new one.
WinxP wins.

Try both on a few years old and Win7 chokes the system to death, while XP happily boots up and runs as usual.

Win7 is really just a trimmed off Vista really, Microsoft even stated that, with a few innovations here and there.

So What do I say?

I say Win 7 is fine if you have a fairly new system, but if you don't or buy something cheap laptop or desktop off ebay or something...stick with WinXP.

One step closer to bye bye Obama

Yes. He should be impeached. He is a communist muslim who symphatizes with terrorists and he isn't even a naturally born citizen. Once he is impeached, Joe Biden should be impeached too.
Obama is single handedly responsible for the economic crisis, since it started in Januar 2009. He did it on purpose, because he hates USA and he is just a mole who seeks destruction of the entire country.
He also tried to bring communism to USA and march under the banner of a red star. He also supports Sharia Law since he is a Muslim and he wants to kill off all Americans by bringing in Islam and Muslim terrorists free to roam in USA and kill anyone they like.

Iran should be nuked too. Just drop a 100 megaton nuclear bomb on them and let them burn and die along with the entire Middle East , the rest will die off from radiation poisoning. It's the way to go.

Let's deal with illegal immigration. All illegal immigrants should be searched and seized and thrown out of the country, because they are taking away the jobs and leaching on the Americans. For this, I support various hit-police squads knocking door to door and arresting everyone who doesn't have an ID. Spanish language should be banned, and anyone caught not being able to speak English should be also arrested, for suspicion of being an illegal immigrant.

Legal immigrants should also fear, if they found out to be anchor babies from the past. Suspend the amendment, which allows anyone to become a citizen who was born in USA. ONLY people are called Americans, who were born from American parents.

All Muslims should be deported. They are all terrorists or being connected to terrorist organizations. Mosques should be leveled and anyone caught preaching Islamic should be immediately arrested and thrown in prison and waterboarded for questioning about terrorists. Once figured out he isn't one, he should be deported anyway. We don't need no stinkin' muslim arabs.

Anyone who dares to raise their voice for them, should be also arrested for suspicion of aiding terrorists.

Everybody should own a gun also. Since Islam is the enemy, everyone who suspects Muslims being terrorists roaming the streets, they have the right to "shoot to kill" on sight. It should be an open season for killing muslim arabs and a reward given for those who kill the most.

Anyone who writes blogs or any news media that criticises the US LAW and Order, should be also arrested with suspect of aiding terrorists, their blogs deleted and their news source seized and finance taken over.

All the schools will be required to enforce the mandatory pledge of allegiance before and after each class, where the children has to stand up swear the allegiance to the US flag. Any school objecting this new rule should be immediately investigated and the entire board of staff should be arrested with the charges of aiding socialist-communist ideology that doesn't belong to USA.
By the way, every children should be checked by physicians, to be sure they are not ethnically semitic-arabs , perhaps sons and daughters of Muslim terrorists. The schools should set up a profile guide how to distinguish Arabs from the rest of the people, so anyone caught being an Arab or a sub mixture should be arrested and deported , after interrogation to make sure he or she doesn't know anything about Muslim terrorists who wants to destroy the US democracy.

No “Peace Train”: Why is America Embracing Extremist Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens)?

By Debbie Schlussel

Debbie Schlussel: Portrait Of A Conservative Nutjob In Heat (Imam Hassan Qazwini Edition)

Debbie Schlussel, who is sort of the K-Mart version of Ann Coulter, along with others on the right, is trying to fuel yet another attack on Sen. Obama for his meeting with Imam Hassan Qazwini, a muslim leader in Detroit. Schlussel is one of the reactionary nutjobs on the right and as soon as they see someone who isn’t Christian they automatically assume that they are terrorists. So they tie themselves up in knots, and accuse Obama of meeting with the enemy or some other such nonsense.

From what sort of mind does Debbie Schlussel’s accusations flow? Debbie Schlussel thought that the Virginia Tech student shootings were a terrorist attack coordinated by a “Paki”, Debbie Schlussel said “we need to be very vigilant of all Muslims”, and Debbie Schlussel claimed that Media Matters was funded by Nazis.

So back to Imam Hassan Qazwini. According to Schlussel, he is a secret agent of Iran. This has to be true because… well, Schlussel says so. Based on her attack on Obama, simply meeting with Qazwini is reason to suspect the loyalties of an American politician.

Well, then, it’s time to arrest President Bush.

Here is George W. Bush at an event with Qazwini in April of 2003 in Dearborn, Michigan:

Using the logic of absolute morons like Debbie Schlussel, we can only surmise that President Bush is a secret agent of Iran who wants to force us to gay marry while converting to Sharia law.

Qazwini also recently met with Pope Benedict.

Debbie Schlussel is a mainstream voice on the right. What she says, many of them believe. This is why the rest of us in the real world cannot have a rational conversation with these people.

Wall Street’s Tea Party
Posted by Zach Carter on @ 12:32 pm
Article printed from speakeasy: http://blogs.alternet.org/speakeasy
URL to article: http://blogs.alternet.org/speakeasy/2010/10/21/wall-streets-tea-party/

The Tea Party likes to wrap itself in “grassroots” contempt for wealthy elites, but the 12 leading Tea Party Senate candidates have accepted over $4.6 million in campaign contributions from Wall Street for the upcoming election.

Despite all the Tea Party rhetoric against big, bad bailouts, the leading candidates have had no problem accepting millions of dollars from Big Finance to further their electoral prospects. Every single candidate has taken money from what the Center for Responsive Politics characterizes as the FIRE lobby—finance, insurance and real estate—a category that includes all of the big financial interests who benefited from the Wall Street bailout.

A full tally of Wall Street contributions to the Tea Party’s Senate team is below, but some of the Tea Party’s biggest figures have been top recipients: Pennsylvania candidate Pat Toomey, Florida hopeful Marco Rubio and Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., have all brought in over $1 million each, while Washington candidate Dino Rossi has pulled in more than $750,000 from Wall Street.

This orgy of Wall Street funding stands in stark contrast to many of the candidates’ campaign postures. Toomey, in particular, has been vocal about his supposed outrage over the Wall Street bailout, but didn’t mind raking in almost $1.2 million from Wall Street to fund his campaign. Toomey worked in the derivatives business on Wall Street for years before jumping through the revolving door into politics. He even helped write the repeal of Glass-Steagall—one of the landmark acts of financial deregulation that paved the way for the Great Crash of 2008.

Kentucky Tea Partier Rand Paul has an entire section of his website dedicated to bashing bailouts, but he’s raked in over $180,000 from Wall Street for this election. After blasting Sen. Bob Bennett, R-Utah, in the Republican primaries for his vote in favor of the Wall Street bailout, Utah Tea Partier Mike Lee accepted over $82,000 from the financial world.

Other Tea Party candidates openly advertise their willingness to do Wall Street’s bidding. Washington Tea Partier Dino Rossi has vowed to appeal the financial reform bill that Congress passed this year, and he has $750,253 worth of reasons to make such a pledge.

Still others blast both “bailouts” and “regulations,” while shying away from specific mentions of “Wall Street.” Florida’s Marco Rubio, Colorado’s Ken Buck, West Virginia’s John Raese and Delaware’s Christine O’Donnell all take this tack. All of them accepted big bucks from Big Finance.

This lack of specificity from high-profile Tea Partiers is astonishing, given the economic significance of Wall Street’s recent excess. Tea Party candidates love to claim that government spending is wasteful while bashing regulation and praising the private sector. But in all of human history, no entity—public or private– has spent money more wastefully than Wall Street did during the housing bubble. By inflating an $8 trillion housing bubble, Wall Street poured money that could have supported sustainable jobs into a speculative cesspool. When that bubble burst, the economy lost 8 million jobs, and American families were decimated. Deregulation will only make things worse—the sheer lack of regulations in the mortgage market was what allowed Wall Street to wreak havoc over the past decade.

It’s easy for politicians to make vague statements against bailouts. But far more should be expected from serious Senate candidates. Tea Partiers need to specify how they will rein in Wall Street to make sure our economy functions properly. And they need to explain how the $4.6 million they’ve accepted from Wall Street will affect their governing decisions.

Tea Party Candidate Wall Street Cash

Sharron Angle, NV $84,536
Ken Buck, CO $86,500
Jim DeMint, SC $1,081,971
Ron Johnson, WI $58,475
Mike Lee, UT $82,032
Joe Miller, AK $5,200
Christine O’Donnell, DE $22,650
Rand Paul, KY $180,595
John Raese, WV $51,800
Marco Rubio, FL $1,003,083
Dino Rossi, WA $750,253
Pat Toomey, PA $1,180,171

TOTAL $4,587,266

A fact BHL Democrats do not want to understand!

Borrowing Money From China: The Blowback Begins
January 10, 2006

This morning brings some bad news for the U.S. economy: China is going shift some of its foreign exchange reserves out of U.S. dollars and into either the Euro or the Yen. China currently holds more than $800 billion U.S. dollars; dumping even a fraction of those dollar is going to cause ripples in the U.S. economy -- the dollar is going to fall, interest rates will rise and the housing market bubble could collapse.

As China's manufacturing industries flood the world with cheap goods, the Chinese central bank has invested roughly three-fourths of its growing foreign currency reserves in U.S. Treasury bills and other dollar-denominated assets. The new policy reflects China's fears that too much of its savings is tied up in the dollar, a currency widely expected to drop in value as the U.S. trade and fiscal deficits climb.

China now boasts the world's second-largest cache of foreign exchange -- behind only Japan -- and is on pace to see its reserves climb past $1 trillion later this year. Even a slight diminishing of the dollar as a percentage of those holdings could exert significant pressure on the U.S. currency, many economists assert.

In recent years, the value of the dollar has been buoyed by major purchases of U.S. Treasury bills by Japan, China and oil-exporting countries -- a flow of capital that has kept interests rates relatively low in the United States and allowed Americans to keep spending even as debts mount. Some economists have long warned that if foreigners lose their appetite for American debt, the dollar would fall, interest rates would rise and the housing boom could burst, sending real estate prices lower.

The comments of the Chinese senior economist, made on the condition of anonymity because the government disciplines those who speak to the press without express authorization, confirmed an analysis in Monday's Shanghai Securities News stating that China is inclined to shift some its savings into other currencies such as the euro and the yen, or into major purchases of commodities such as oil for a long-discussed strategic energy reserve.

This is the direct result of borrowing from China to finance the Iraq War, which is not (as was promised by the Bush administration) going to pay for itself. Recent reports show that United States consumers have a negative savings rate, that is, they are saving nothing but adding credit card debt at an alarming pace. This is a recipe for economic disaster, because the engine of the U.S. economy is fueled by the buying of the consumer.

So what do you tea party-ers and republicans gonna protest about in the future?

Taxes. It will always be taxes. As long as there are politicians, they will try to raise our taxes, the country needs people demanding lower taxes or we'll be taxed and spent into poverty.
Poverty!!! What is Poverty, Republicans and most of your Billonaires and there beleivers don't think there's any Poverty, just people who where born with bad luck. So they say don't try to put that blame on them. So the bottom line in what there saying is fly away bridie we have taxes to not pay

I'm sorry, but you have to know that this post is completely wrong and a bit crazy. One example: Bill Gates has given billions to charities to help poverty stricken people in Africa and around the world. He has spent a fortune developing technology to make the lives of the impoverished better.

Bill Gates supports whoever is the best for him at the moment.

Preparing for War with Iran. The $60 billion U.S. arms deal with Saudi Arabia is directed against Iran

by Dov Zakheim

It is widely believed that the massive $60 billion U.S. arms deal with Saudi Arabia is directed against Iran. After all, Israel did not object to the deal. As one analyst told China's Xinhua News Agency, Jerusalem, of all places, was simply adhering to the ancient principle of: "My enemy's enemy is my friend."

It is indeed possible that the deal -- which includes up to 84 new F-15s, upgrading of Riyadh's current force of 70 F-15s, and up to 1,000 so-called "bunker buster" bombs -- is meant to enhance the Saudi deterrent against Iran. But that presupposes that Iran will still be moving ahead with its nuclear weapons program in 2015, when the first new F-15s will be delivered to the desert kingdom, but will not yet have actually fielded the bomb. Should Iran already have acquired nuclear weapons together with viable systems for delivering them prior to that date, it is difficult to see how the Saudi purchases would effectively deter Tehran from anything other than a conventional attack on the Saudi Kingdom. On the other hand, should Iran have dropped its nuclear program -- whether as a result of either international pressure or an internal upheaval -- the Saudi purchase would appear to be somewhat beside the point.

A look at the remainder of the Saudi deal indicates that Riyadh has other concerns in mind. The Saudis are also acquiring 190 helicopters. These include 70 Apache Longbows, an upgraded version of the U.S. Army's highly successful attack helicopter which carries, among other weapons, a powerful 30 MM gun and anti-tank missiles. Riyadh is also purchasing 36 AH-6i "Little Bird" light helicopters, which are often used by Special Forces. Finally, the Saudis are buying 72 UH-60 Blackhawks, which are ideal for moving troops into and around combat zones.

Acquisition of these helicopters makes the most sense in the context of a need to prevent incursions from Yemen or to support the Sana'a government's operations against rebellious tribes, such as those that have been directed against the Houthis (who are Zaidis, a branch of Shiite Islam) since 2004. Indeed, so do the F-15s, and were the Houthis or other rebels to operate from underground shelters, so would the bunker busters as well. Finally the Saudi naval modernization program is as much geared to preventing piracy in the Red Sea and seaborne attacks on oil facilities in the Eastern Province as on deterring the Iranian Navy or the Iranian Revolutionary Guard's naval forces.

Why would Israel not object to the Saudi purchase of attack systems that could in theory be deployed from Tabuk against the Jewish state? In part because the Israelis do not expect such an attack; in part because they will be receiving the more advanced F-35 the same year that the Saudis begin to take ownership of the F-15s; in part because the Israelis own, and are therefore familiar with, not only F-15s, but most of the systems the Saudis are purchasing. Presumably, the Israel Defense Forces have devised defenses against them, whether through electronic warfare or kinetic means. In addition, however, it is in Israel's interest that the conservative Saudi regime prevent radicals such as the Houthis -- who among their other acts have terrorized Yemen's ancient Jewish community to the point that most of it has now emigrated -- from ever gaining power on the Arabian Peninsula.

Moreover, even if the Israelis do not expect the F-15s to be relevant in terms of stopping the Iranian nuclear program, Israel believes that Tehran does not need five years to build the bomb -- they recognize the psychological impact on the Ayatollahs of their tacit support of the Saudi purchase. The Israelis would be delighted if Tehran's paranoid leaders were to conclude from Jerusalem's passivity in the face of the Saudi deal that Israel and Riyadh are in cahoots against them and that Israel has made a secret arrangement to overfly Saudi airspace in an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities.

There is yet one more reason for Israeli acquiescence to the sale. For more than twenty years -- since Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir quashed American Jewish opposition to the 1988 sale of F-18s to Kuwait -- Israel has been relatively silent in the face of arms sales to the Gulf Arabs. At the time, Shamir concluded that the sale posed no threat to Israel, and his attaché in Washington informed a number of vocal Congressional opponents of the deal that they should reserve their vitriol for other issues. Since then, the Israeli assessment of the impact of such sales on its security has not changed, while its desire to win over the Gulf States has increased over time. Israel wants to establish decent, if not official, relations with the southern Gulf regimes not only to forge a united front against Iran, but also to encourage those states to play a more positive role in the peace process and to increase their financial support of the Palestinian Authority. While Israel has had on-and-off economic relations with several of the Gulf Cooperation Council states, Saudi Arabia has not been one of them. Riyadh is the biggest prize and the Israelis are ready to go to great lengths to win it over -- and if that means silence in the face of a massive purchase of American arms, so be it.

US announces Saudi arms sale of up to 60 billion dollars

The United States announced an arms deal with Saudi Arabia on Wednesday worth up to 60 billion dollars that includes advanced fighter jets, helicopters, missiles and other weaponry and equipment, dpa reported.

The deal that will be implemented over 15 to 20 years is the largest US arms deal ever.

The deal proposes the sale of 84 F-15 fighters jets to Saudi Arabia and upgrades older 70 F-15s previously purchased by the Saudi government, Andrew Shapiro, the State Department's assistant secretary for political and military affairs said.

The helicopters included in the deal are 70 Apaches, 72 Black Hawks and 36 Little Birds, Shapiro said. Also in the package are an assortment of advanced missiles, bombs, radar and other equipment.

The Obama administration formally notified Congress of the sale, which is required under such a massive agreement.

The Obama administration decided to proceed with a deal after evaluating Saudi's defence needs and determining would would not diminish Israel's military edge in the region, and concluded the deal would promote security and stability in the Middle East.

Observers of the current US election season have noted the prominent role of Rupert Murdoch’s reactionary Fox News Channel, which currently employs GOP and “Tea Party” partisans Sarah Palin, Glen Beck, Mike Huckabee, Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum, Sean Hannity, and others. Some have alleged that a television network carrying so many potential political candidates and propagandists on its payroll is unprecedented. But there is a precedent for large-scale Fox intervention into a political campaign.

In 1932, the German newsreel subsidiary of Fox News Channel’s corporate ancestor, Fox Films, intervened in national elections in Germany.

The Candidate Fox Supported Was Nazi Leader Adolf Hitler

The basic facts are available in German historian Hans Mommsen’s authoritative study entitled The Rise and Fall of Weimar Democracy, which is translated into English and widely available in over five hundred libraries in this country. Mommsen, one of the most distinguished postwar German historians, is now Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Bochum. In Mommsen’s account of Nazi propaganda techniques, we find the following: “There was nothing that escaped the ingenuity of Nazi propagandists. A case in point was the use of film. Under Goebbels’ influence the party had begun to exploit the potential of the political propaganda film to an unprecedented extent as early as 1930. Such films were shown mostly in places where Hitler and other prominent party leaders were not able to appear as speakers. For the manufacture of outdoor sound film, the NSDAP turned to an American company, Twentieth Century Fox.“1

Scholar William G. Chrystal confirms this account and provides further important details in his 1975 article on “Nazi Party Election Films, 1927-1938.” Chrystal writes: “Support for two additional 1932 election films, Der Führer (The Leader), and Hitlers Kampf um Deutschland (Hitler’s Struggle for Germany) came from the German-based subsidiary of Twentieth Century Fox, Fox Tönende Wochenschau (Fox Weekly Sound Newsreel [i.e., Fox Movietone News]). In addition, they also supplied some mobile sound film vans to be used during the campaign. Thus at least part of Hitler’s support in that critical time was the result of Fox’s help. The background for this assistance is unknown since Fox Tönende Wochenschau records were destroyed during the war,” according to a July 9, 1974 letter to Chrystal from Joseph Bellfort, who was at that time the vice president of the Twentieth Century Fox International Film Corporation.2

Fox Helped Hitler’s Voice to Reach Many Germans for the First Time

Of the first of these two films, Chrystal writes: “…Der Führer (The Leader) was one of two sound films subsidized by Fox Tönende Wochenschau. Released on April 13, 1932, it was originally titled Volk und Führer (Nation and Leader). It was a relatively short film, 263 meters long, but it provided many people with their first opportunity to hear Hitler speak. These films were accompanied by an apparently popular tide which enabled their wider dissemination. In his diary on March 6, 1932, [Nazi propaganda boss Joseph] Goebbels noted: ‘We now also win the movie theater for our propaganda.’”3

This film lasts about five minutes. In it Hitler, speaking in Berlin on April 4, 1932, develops his characteristic theme that the German army was betrayed and stabbed in the back in November 1918 by the Weimar politicians, especially the Social Democrats. This speech was part of Hitler’s campaign for president, in which he was defeated on April 10, 1932 by von Hindenburg but nevertheless received almost 37% of the votes, which represented a new high in Nazi support up to that time. In the subsequent parliamentary election held on July 31, 1932, the Nazis added 19% to their previous totals to emerge for the first time as the largest single party in Germany with 38% of the votes — thanks in part to the assistance rendered to Hitler by Fox Movietone News.

Concerning the second film Fox made for Hitler, Chrystal writes: “…new Reichstag elections were called for November 6, 1932…. The second of the Fox-subsidized productions, Hitlers Kampf um Deutschland (Hitler’s Struggle for Germany), appeared on August 30. It comprised 606 meters of Hitler’s July, 1932 Eberswalde speech. An indication of the effectiveness of this speech and its film record can be found in its later use. When Reichstag elections were held again in March 1933, this same film was re-issued under a new title, Reichskanzler Adolf Hitler Spricht (Reich Chancellor Adolf Hitler Speaks).”4

Hitler’s speech in the Brandenburg Stadium in Eberswalde on July 27, 1932, one of three he gave that day, is a classic demagogic performance. As Mommsen points out, “in the hectic 1932 election campaign” the Nazis organized mass rallies featuring “speeches that Hitler tailored specifically to the psychotic public mood that had been created by the deepening crisis.” (Mommsen, p. 338) “We are intolerant,” raved Hitler, promising to drive more than thirty other political parties out of Germany. “We have one goal before us, to fanatically and ruthlessly shove all these parties into the grave,” he added. This was the message which Fox Movietone News helped deliver to the German public. Six months after he gave this speech, Hitler seized power as chancellor and began consolidating his power as dictator — once again thanks in part to the help of Fox Movietone News.

Note that Chrystal speaks of Fox has having “subsidized” Hitler’s critical 1932 election campaigns. This can be considered as the 1930s equivalent of illicit contributions in kind to a politician under current US election law, which is the charge often made against Fox News today, as for example in a recent filing by the Democratic Governors’ Association in regard to the Kasich gubernatorial campaign in Ohio.

Fox Movietone News and the Rise of European Fascism

Robert Edwin Herzstein, in his article entitled “Movietone News and the Rise of Fascism in Europe, 1930-1935,” explored the partial archive of Fox Movietone News for these years now at the Thomas Cooper Library at the University of South Carolina. It is clear from this article that the regular weekly Fox Movietone newsreels also played into the hands of the Nazi and fascist media strategy. Proud of this record, “Fox called its newsreel operations ‘the mightiest of them all.’” (Herzstein, p. 314)

In the Fox Movietone newsreels and outtakes of Nazi rallies, says Herzstein, “one senses the enthusiasm, the communion between leader and masses…. Hitler is often seen standing in the presence of his friend and foreign press chief Ernst Hanfstaengl, apparently oblivious to the prying movie camera…. Hitler, in part a media creation, was better equipped to manipulate the masses by putting them on the movie screen. He made them part of the media action, and the outtakes show us how that was done.” (Herzstein, p. 317) Hitler’s rivals and adversaries, including his predecessor as chancellor, von Papen, the Austrian leader Dollfuss, and the Social Democrat Dittman all appear in the Fox footage in a negative or unflattering light by comparison.

One big fan of Fox Movietone News was the Italian fascist dictator Benito Mussolini, who was given the opportunity to make one of his famous bravura speeches for the Fox camera. According to Herzstein, one of the first sound newsreels shown in the United States depicted Mussolini in March 1929 speaking in English directly to the American people, saying: “Your talking newsreel has tremendous possibilities. Let me speak through it in twenty cities in Italy once a week and I need no other power.” (Herzstein, p. 318) In the mind of the Duce, newsfilm was thus already the handmaiden of fascist power. Herzstein’s extensive survey of the Fox Movietone archive for 1930-1935 apparently yielded no examples of any criticism or unfavorable coverage of the fascist dictators, since none is mentioned in his article.6

The last Fox Movietone newsreels appeared in the United States in 1963. According to the Wikipedia article on Movietone News, parts of the Fox Movietone newsreel collection are still “owned and managed by the Fox Film Corporation’s corporate successor (and namesake), Fox News Channel. The majority of the collection is stored in New Jersey, mostly unseen since the newsreels were originally shown in theatres. During its early years, Fox News Channel had a weekend show which played the newsreels.”7

As the philosopher George Santayana rightly observed in 1905, “when experience is not retained, as among savages, infancy is perpetual. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
