It's been a slow and painful death for Windows XP, and it's not over yet. (If the operating system were a beloved pet, you'd have put it to sleep ages ago.) Microsoft plans to officially start barring manufacturers from selling computers preloaded with the aging OS on October 22nd, and Dell plans to get a head start on the phase-out by eliminating XP as an option from its direct sales site this month. Dell and others will still offer XP as a downgrade option, but customers will have to specifically request an installation disc, and then perform the OS-ectomy themselves. With XP turning nine-years old on October 25th, we think you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who would suggest sticking with the old dog, though.

Have you ever considered that Microsoft has yet to offer an OS any better overall than XP? Sounds like an expected "fleecing of America" to me. I have no respect to Mr. Gates' monopolistic organization, nor for his products.

I'll drop XP when something better comes along, just like I did with DOS.smokin

Have you tried Adriane Knoppix? I thought it was cool what Klaus did for his partially blind wife. It is so awesome. What a nice guy and she was helping him to work out the ORCA stuff. And if you don't have handicapped problems it is still a wonderful distro. I have been having problems with my Brasero so have switched back to K3B.

It is amazing the number of hackers who still use DOS. I thought it was funny when in college Linux was referred to as DOS2. Then they tell you some programming language is not actually DOS. I was reading up on DOS. Of course, there are the versions to 6.22 or what they call real DOS. But then there are the hidden DOS like DOS 7.0 in Windows 95 and DOS 8.0 in Windows ME. DOS might be dead but there are those who keep resurrecting it.

As of now I've just bouht a new laptop. Never really used to be a laptop person. I like my dekstops cause I put them toghether and I get whatever operatiing system I want. But I have to tell you windows seven isn't all that bad. It takes a bit of getting used to wrom the old style xp cause windows remained pretty mutch the same over the years(untill vista) Honestly windows serven is fairly good not up there yet but it'll get there. And ofcaurse windows has always had good bad good bad kinda thing going on but windows seven is defenetly one of the good ones.

Bingo! Windows 7 is just barely holding up to the loading speed of XP.

Try both (I have) on the same system first, let it be a fairly new one.
WinxP wins.

Try both on a few years old and Win7 chokes the system to death, while XP happily boots up and runs as usual.

Win7 is really just a trimmed off Vista really, Microsoft even stated that, with a few innovations here and there.

So What do I say?

I say Win 7 is fine if you have a fairly new system, but if you don't or buy something cheap laptop or desktop off ebay or something...stick with WinXP.

I think we better clarify things for many people. XP is a DOS, ie a DISK OPERATING SYSTEM, that is it operates from a DISK, albeit what we now call a FIXED DISK! However, for the masses DOS usually refers to the old FLOPPY DISK OPERATING SYSTEM, where FIXED DISKS were huge monsters, and incredibly expensive. Everything was done from the floppy disk. As GUIs (Graphic User Interfaces) were developed, they simply ran on top of DOS. The more sophisticated the GUI became, the more the GUI itself required its own command system. When 32 bit operating systems came about, driven by the need for faster processing, Win95 was born. It still sat on top of DOS but used a new version 7.0. Win98, and WinME followed, while NT (New Technology) was built from scratch without a DOS dependancy. NT spawned Win2000 (as the splash screen grammatically incorrectly states "Built on NT Technology", a bit like PIN Number). XP was also built on NT/2000, and DOS was pushed further to the back. But, a number of commands still apply. The fact that you can change the COMPATIBILITY mode to Win95 says a lot huh... I wonder what LONGHORN is going to be based on, maybe AMIGA WORKBENCH...lol (A superb GUI and way before its time unfortunately). Anyhoo, there is always A DOS BOOT DISK...;o)

Safe Computing...;o)

Hehe that's ok pcfixitguy, I got a buddy who's been in IT since the 80's and he still calls it DOS...drives me crazy.

DOS IS DEAD!! Long live the cmd.exe!!

Now for fun try this....

Enter command.com in a run prompt and see what you get =)

I gave up on miker$oft products when they announced the impending cessation of updates/ support for win98, which I BOUGHT with MONEY.
My 'command interpreter' has been /bin/bash ever since.
m$dos... you are dead to me!
