Master cylinders usually won't fail from driver neglect, most likely it is just worn out. It can however be prematurly failed from the wrong type of fluid being added (can cause seal failure) When changed, be sure to change brake booster (if equiped) Fluid leakage back into the booster from the seal can be detramental to the vaccum diaphram in the booster. If the unit has hydro-boost, it may not be a master cylinder issue but a hydroboost issue.
